Local elections were held in Majayjay, Laguna on Monday, May 11, 1998 within the Philippine general election. The voters elected the elective local posts in the municipality: the mayor, vice mayor, and eight councilors.

Background

Incumbent Mayor Ruben Guera is barred for running for a fourth term. His party nominated incumbent Councilor Dominador Eñar, Eñar is running under Lakas–CMD, his main opponent is incumbent Vice Mayor Leon Sobreviñas, running under the LAMMP. The other candidates were former Vice Mayor Froilan Gruezo of NPC, lawyer Eulogio Arceta Sr. of Liberal Party, incumbent Councilor Nicandro Ordoñez of Reporma, Marcos Ceribo of Aksyon Demokratiko and businessman Teodoro Pontiveros as an Independent.

Incumbent Vice Mayor Leon Sobreviñas didn't run for reelection and instead he run for Mayor for the third time. His party nominated Robert Juanillo, Juanillo's main opponent is the administration nominee incumbent (Senior) Councilor Mario Mercolisa, the other candidates were fromer Councilor Erlinda Vitasa of the Liberal Party and incumbent Councilor Cesar Urcia of NPC.

Coalition

As the mayor, vice mayor and the members of the municipal council are elected on the same ballot, mayoral candidates may present or endorse a slate of candidates. These slates usually run with their respective mayoral and vice mayoral candidates along with the other members of their slate. A group of candidates independent of any mayoral or vice mayoral candidate may also form a slate consisting of themselves.
