Personal Narrative

A personal narrative is a story about an event, incident, or expirience that occurred in the author's life. when such a stories are compiled together in a book that is called an autobiography. Personal narratives can be of varying length and on many different subjects. When writing a personal narrative it is always good to keep the following general guidelines in mind:

  • One idea per story
    • Generally you want one idea for every story unless you are writing an autobiography.
  • Express your purpose so the audience can understand it
    • Tell the audience why you are writing what you are writing
  • Written as a first person narrative
    • Writ it as "I" did this "I" did that
  • Express feelings, thoughts, and senses
    • Make it clear all that was going on including what you hear, smell, see, feel, and taste
  • Make the audience feel like they're actually there
    • Use your setting to make it feel like the audience is there
  • Write something that's important to you and state why it's important to you
  • Make the reader hooked from the beginning
    • give them something right from the start that will catch their attention
  • Make sure that it's something you remember well so you can write it in as much detail as possible
    • try to pick a topic or story that you are familiar with, such as a day at school, that you remember well

To successfully write a personal narrative you should follow the ideas above as a general rule of thumb.
