CBMR (Cristie Bare-Machine Recovery) is a disaster recovery and bare-metal restore program that includes functionality for normal file backup and restore. It is proprietary and commercial software developed and sold by Cristie Software. The current version is 6.3.1, released in September of 2010. The two major aspects of CBMR are the backup program and the recovery environment.
Disaster Recovery edit
CBMR can perform disaster recovery alongside normal file recovery, allowing a broken system to be completely restored to the previous state which it was backed up in. This is achieved by backing up critical system files, like the registry alongside the normal file backup to give a complete snapshot of the system at the time of the backup. The actual recovery process is performed in a modified version of Windows PE, which is called the Cristie DR Console.
Dissimilar Hardware Recovery edit
CBMR's dissimilar hardware recovery feature facilitates recovering a system to completely new hardware, this is often marketed as "server migration". This type of recovery is performed by driver injection inside of the disaster recovery environment, so that the recovered operating system may use the drivers for the new system to load the new devices. The only drivers required to perform a successful dissimilar hardware recovery are storage drivers e.g. IDE and/or SCSI drivers and NIC drivers. Physical to virtual recovery and visa versa are also supported.
