Jim as he was known to friends and family, was an abstract modernist painter, educator and counselor. His work was heavily influenced by color and sacred geometry. He also worked with other mediums through out his career notably ,print making and stained glass. While his primary work was done in water colors, her also did numerous oil paintings, pastels and mixed medium paints.Jim strongly believed that art should be accessible to all walks of life and was not something of permeance. He was born in California while his father, a Dutch immigrant ran several Frock(Dress) stores that were located adjacent to the Movie studio entrances in L.A..His dad, Danial had moved the family from there to be the vice president of Macy's department store. His mom Bonnie and father divorced and Bonnie remarried George W. Ray Jr. the lead lawyer for Aramco. They lived in Norwalk Ct.and traveled quite a bit, putting Jim in boarding school. He and his father Danial grew distant as the years went on.He often spoke fondly of summers on the family farm in Nebraska and the times with his Irish grandfather James and grandmother Ginny from Sweden. One of the most influential moments for Jim was the time he spent under the wing of Josef Albers at Yale. He is also known for being the founder of the print department at Penn. While living in Philly, he was quite involved in the civil rights movement and had rocks thrown through his window, death threats and was arrested at one point for helping an African American family move. Later he moved to the the lower east side in New York where he lived on Canal street and Bond street. During that time he was to meet his third wife. He married 5 times.
