Florence Fulton Hobson


Early life and family


Florence Fulton Hobson is said to have been the leading woman in professional architecture in Ireland. Her Parents Benjamin Hobson and Mary Ann née Bulmer gave birth to her on February 11th 1881 in Monasterevin in county Kildare[1]. Benjamin Hobson was a grocer and his wife Mary Ann was not only a women’s rights campaigner, but an amateur archaeologist also. The Family were Quakers Née Bulmer, originally from Yorkshire, was an important member of the Irishwomen’s association[2]. By the time her brother was born, Florence Fulton Hobson and the family had moved to Belfast[3]. John Bulmer Hobson was born in January 1883 and grew up to be a known nationalist and a writer[4]. Florence Fulton Hobson attended school at the Friends’ school in Lisburn and later realised she was interested in becoming an Architect at the College of Art.
