NOTES TO SELF edit

Date of birth is wrong- that's Henry Cooper's birthdate. Remember to fix that.

END OF NOTES edit

Al "Blue" Lewis was an African-American heavyweight boxer who fought Muhammed Ali in a non-title fight in 1972. The fight took place at Croke Park in Dublin, Ireland and, as I find out more about him, I will add to this and hopefully produce a reasonable article.

Biography edit

Biographical details to go here. The only non-boxing things I have found out so far are that he was from Detroit and one reference to him having a criminal record. Turned pro in 1966.

Career highlights edit

Obviously the Ali fight is mentioned here. At 223.5 lbs at the time of the fight Lewis was one of the heaviest fighters to face Ali. The fight lasted until the 11th round of 12 when Ali won by TKO. Other notable opponents might be Cleveland Williams whom he defeated in Detroit in 1970, Oscar Bonavena against whom he lost by disqualification in 1971 and Jack O'Halloran, against whom he lost on points.

Life outside boxing edit

After retiring from boxing Lewis became a trainer in his home town of Detroit.

Awards and Honours edit

No idea about any of this- requires further research.

References edit

A book has been written about his fight with Ali in '72 by an Irish author. It appears from the reviews I've read of it that the final chapter is primarily about Lewis, with him talking about his life and career. This needs to be mentioned as well as possibly being a good source of biographical information about the guy- as there's very little to be found online.
