MoonlightVector: If you have concerns about the quality of Vere Bird Jr. you should bring them up on the article's talk page. Maybe you were the editor (using your ip address) who added the date of birth as October 1936. If so, you need to include a reference. Maybe you found the date in this source. I see it's url has simply been pasted in at the bottom of the reference section. It now needs to be correctly integrated into the text, perhaps immediately after the dates of birth and death at the beginning of the article. • Thanks very much, Chrysanthemum123, and please forgive me for my misuse of pronouns. As a Brit from the early 1940s, I find it extremely difficult to adapt but I'll try to do better in the future. Many of us have been able to cope with "he/she" (or "she/he") but the "they/their/them" sequence with plural verbs for just one person is difficult to absorb. As someone familiar with Scandinavian usage, I find the Swedish solution with "hen" (instead of "han" or "hun") much easier to cope with. Pity we don't have an equivalent in English. I confess that I did not know about article "classes" before today; the reason I bring this up is because an anonymous IP/new account has been re-adding massive amounts of unsourced/unencyclopedic material to the article, over the objections of at least myself and another editor (User:Jjj1238). Well, I didn't just indiscriminately "delete almost all the content" - if you actually read the content that used to be there, it was extremely un-enyclopedic and read like a film script for a dramatized version of Gerti Daub's life. Most of that material was unsourced or poorly sourced as well. There was one massive section in particular ("Behind the Curtain") that was a direct copyright violation - just Daub's own words, lifted word-for-word and pasted into the article. I'm genuinely curious if you actually looked closely at the article before you rated it "B-class". Wes sideman (talk) 13:57, 10 September 2021 (UTC)

Maybe I didn't look into the all the details of the article in sufficient detail at the time. In assessing articles, I often rely on the findings of ORES and Rater. In this case, that may have been a mistake, given your copyright claims. I suggest you continue the discussion on the article's talk page. I try to avoid involvement in potential edit wars. Hi, Ipigott. I don’t see how Wes sideman can disagree with you and say he didn’t delete almost all the content for Gerti Daub in January, 2021. He clearly did. Nor can I understand why he wants to so badly that he will go so far as to ask you to change the B-class ratings you gave it. He says massive amounts of unsourced material is being added. That’s simply not true;it's liberally sourced. He also claims that the section “Behind the Curtain” was a “direct copyright violation” and that supports his position that you should re-examine the entry.

If you look at the revision for 03:33 14 October 2014, you will see that I was the one who contributed the “Behind the Curtain” part to the Daub entry. Please note that there was no copyright violation as I have Gerti Daub Hollmann’s express, written permission to use “Behind the Curtain.” If you doubt this, you can contact Ms. Hollmann at her website: http://gertihollmann.de and she will assure you I did not violate any copyrights. I've been actively editing since 2006 and in recent years have done quite a bit of mentoring, especially in connection with new contributors to wp:Women in Red. Maybe that's why I received an invitation to participate in the first experimental phase of this kind of mentoring on the English Wikipedia. I thought it would be interesting to volunteer as we certainly have a major problem in retaining new contributors, most of whom edit very little, if at all, after registering. You can see from the editing history of this page that I've been faced with quite a mixed bag of questions, with only a few newcomers seriously interested in editing. That said, apparently our efforts have paid dividends. I see you joined Wikipedia almost a year ago and that much of your editing has been in connection with the Teahouse. If you would like to become more active in creative editing, i.e. adding extensive new content to existing articles or creating new ones, please let me know. I might be able to help you along. I actually have a few classes I've hated so I"ve pretty much forgotten what I learned in those classes. When I first came to Wikipedia which was actually around the same time as you, I started out on the Cherokee Wikipedia where I made minor edits to existing articles. I shifted over to the English Wikipedia to edit articles on the Cherokee people here. I found WiR sometime right after that and immediately set out in creating articles for Cherokee women as per our Indigenous women event in August of every year. That directly led me to Ian and SusunW. I can't express what these two have meant to me as an editor here, much less how much I love them as people. There are very few that I would trust more to offer advice and assist new editors or those with experience that are just seeking to add to their own knowledge about Wikipedia than Ian. Ah ok. That wasn't something I added but it was merely something that was already there and I simply just changed up the wording. However I could try and find a source for this. I'm actually wondering if some of that came from the Slime Rancher Wiki on Fandom as I noticed that it uses the word "docile" however from my experience playing the game, it's never used the word docile (although it has used feral). Obviously my experience playing the game won't work as a reference per WP:OR, although I'm fairly sure there's a policy/essay somewhere that basically says, if something is obvious and can easily be observed, it doesn't need a reference (for example you don't need to provide a source for a human having 5 fingers. Although I might be able to use the game's "tutorial" as it basically gives you information about new things related to the game's mechanics as you discover them. Blaze The Wolf: There are several essays on excessive referencing. Maybe you were looking for Wikipedia:Citation_overkill. It's nevertheless important to make sure readers can verify the source of added content as it frequently happens that new contributors simply add their own feelings or interpretations. Reference to good secondary sources is preferable to citing primary sources. If you are particularly interested in video games, you should read Wikipedia:Writing articles on video game genres. You should look carefully at some of the background articles I have suggested above. You might also be inspired to create your own article on a game or possibly on people associated with the genre. I do agree with what you're saying. THere is actually a specific subject sort of related to video games that I've been wanting to create an article on, however I haven't gotten close to started because I'm afraid I'll get started and then find that there aren't enough sources available to establish its notability. That subject is an electronic music group called Hyper Potions. An article with that name did exist at one point however it simply just redirected to a specific section of Sonic Mania which they made 2 songs for. It no longer exists because of a RfD I did. Hello - advice welcome Sam Mort article has had major deletion https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sam_Mort&oldid=1044657457 and all the details including reliable sourced verifiable statements of Mort's key actions in Afghanistan (and then her statements which differed from UK and USA military and embassy staff) during Fall of Kabul (2021) has now been deleted entirely, and replaced with a recommendation to look at Mort's entries on Twitter.

As the editor who did this is a major blogger on the region, I am not contacting him directly to dispute this as yet, but seeking your advice as the rater of the article prior to this change.

Can you advise if it makes sense to reinstate some of the points that you would have considered previously relevant in rating the content. Thank you.

Thanks Blaze The Wolf but the edits related to her CV ( curriculum vitae ) are additions on her life prior to Afghanistan. However this actually has an explanation (even if I don't entirely understand it) so as I said I think it would be a good idea to ask the user about their removal and try and get a clarification on their removal. Kaybeesquared: Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Salampax has contributed very little to Wikipedia and obviously is not aware of the importance of good secondary sources. A CV is seldom a basis for developing a biography. The passages removed were well sourced and should be retained. On the other hand, the passage beginning "Mort was interviewed on China Global Television Network in Europe..." which was deleted by Amigao should in my opinion not be re-inserted. Before restoring Salapax's deletions, I suggest you leave an explanation on the article's talk page, possibly with a link to this discussion. Please let me know if you run into any difficulties. Jerichau-Baumann's mermaid paintings

Hi Ipigott. Only very few paintings by Danish women painters have articles on Wikipedia, so I decided to create an article about Elisabeth Jerichau-Baumann's 1873 mermaid painting of a mermaid with additional information about her earlier mermaid paintings. However, it turned out to be very hard to keep track of the different paintinge. Many sources seem to mix the different paintings up, throw in incorrect dates. or to match them with the wrong pictures. If you have the time and interest, I would therefore very much appreciate it if you would give my article Mermaid (Jerichau-Baumann) an extra critical look. Or if you can find additional information ot have anything to add (especially the description section should probably be improved). One of my sources (the first one cited) states that there are "at least four paintings, two in Danish museums and two in private collections abroad". Here are some of the things I am uncertain about:

• 1861 paintings: Exhibited in Paris, sold to Wanda Zahrtmann and in 2020 sold by Bruun Rasmussen with useful information in their cataloque - no loose ends"
• 1862: Exhibited in London. Not sold - what happened to it? And is it the painting seen here or is this really just a mirrored version of the 1873 painting with manipulated colours?
• The painting given to Hans Christian Andersen in 1868 - at least one source mentions that it is from 1863 but can that date be trusted? It is unfortunately not included in Kunstindeks Danmark's list of works in public collections.
• 1873 painting: Sold to Carl Jacobsen in 1877 - no loose ends!
• One of the sources mentions(and shows) a painting which belonged to Sophie Lerche. If it is not identical with the 1862 painting exhibited in London, I then seem to count at least five paintings. And who was she/when did she own it? Furthermore, the dates for some of the images available on Wikipedia Commons seem to be wrong. In particular, one of the paintings is claimed to be from 1847 (and the cource is now a dead link) but the painting seems to be identical with the 1861 painting recently sold by Bruun Rasmussen (but with a different frame?). That she should have painted a mermaid already in 1847 sounds very unlikely and the text in the Bruun Rasmussen cataloque written by a reliable art historian states that the 1861 painting was most likely her first mermaid painting. So I decided to reward myself for finishing the Americas, Oceania and 1/2 of Africa and at the same time work on the WIG editathon. Kinda keeping in the focus, I picked a woman whose nationality was stolen. It was interesting to see that you, Rosiestep and I worked on creating her in 2015. I think I am done with reverifying, translating and adding to the text, but if you have time before I nominate it, could you give it a copyedit? In particular I want to be sure her nationality situation is clear, even though I cannot state that she was stateless, because I am unsure if she ever legally repatriated to Mexico. The legal conflicts indicate that she had no nationality, but again, as I find no secondary source that says that, I didn't draw a conclusion. If you don't have time, not a problem. SusunW: Interesting biography, well presented. Very little to copy edit on this. My only problem is italics. I remember not too long ago we looked into whether or not organizations in foreign languages should be in italics. It was quite clear that they should not but if you use language templates, they come out italicized. Similarly, I only italicize the English translations of publications if they have been published in English under that title. If not, I do not use italics but I see the templates you have used in e.g. Autobiography introduce italics under the trans parameter. This is probably not important but I remember one of my articles on a Danish organization was seriously criticized for use of such inappropriate italics. I spent quite some time going through all my other articles on organizations, getting rid of all the italics on their Danish names. Up to you to deal with it if you consider it important. Thanks, very much appreciate your input and help, Ian. I've missed our collaborations while I've been doing all these law articles. Yes, it's confusing indeed. I was always taught to italicize foreign words and titles. I never italicized a translated title until someone pointed out to me in a review that if it was a translated work, it would be italicized and I should. I have also been told numerous times to put the English name/title first and then the actual foreign name in parenthesis, but that seems totally weird, especially if the title isn't known in English. As you say, the templates operate in the exact opposite of what critiques I've been given. If you input a citation, the original title always comes first and then the translated name. Honestly, I think the rules on here are convoluted. I am sure someone will tell me to change it however I write it. ;) SusunW (talk) 12:53, 2 October 2021 (UTC)

SusunW I agree. It would help if a group of experienced editors, perhaps including seasoned librarians, got together on this and tried to sort it out once and for all. The current section on Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Text_formatting#Italic_type is not at all clear and possibly in certain cases incorrect. But getting anything like this improved is always a nightmare. Some of the templates seem to be designed to create mistakes! I've missed our collaboration too. Yes, changing guidelines on here is impossible. People are entrenched in what they believe to be is "right". Nevermind that right is multi-faceted. I may have told you my student from Mexico who worked on his PhD in York was totally frustrated. Not only did English spelling differ from the American English he had learned in school and studying with me, but the punctuation was exactly the opposite in many cases. For example, AE uses "Quotes 'within' a quote", but BE uses 'Quotes "within" a quote'. Our rules seem to be a total jumble at times and the templates operate independently, IMO. I may try to get in another woman this month. I truly enjoy writing them more than writing legalize, but if I don't get back to nationality, I'll never finish. Ipigott: From one of the links on the previous Reviewer's response (Theroadislong), I read about biographies. For instance, instead of the title to be 'Benneth Nwankwo' it will be Benneth Nwankwo Media(BN Media) or Benneth Nwankwo Photography. If I write on any of these, then it is not really a biography.

So my question is how to change the initial title from Benneth Nwankwo to Benneth Nwankwo Media (BN Media). Since according to the link in Reviewer's response (Theroadislong), Benneth Nwankwo might not be notable enough for a biography on Wikipedia.

Olugold: The article has now been accepted on notability grounds as a biography. There had been a lot of confusion about the article since 2015 when it was first refused on notability grounds and then protected against further creation. The reviewer, who is not an administrator, was relying on several previous refusals as well as on its protection when making a suggestion in regard to changing the title. But in the meantime, a highly experienced administrator has lifted the protection and encouraged me to improve the article, then move it to article space. As you probably realize yourself, the achievements of Nwankwo have developed considerably since 2015. In my opinion, that is the main reason why the biography is acceptable as it is, without any need to change the name. I would not have spent several hours a day over the past few days trying to get the article accepted if I had not been convinced it met Wikipedia requirements for notability. It has now been in mainspace for a couple of days and has not been the subject of any further reviews. I therefore strongly urge you not to consider changing the title but rather to continue to make any useful additions to the article as Nwankwo's career evolves. I have noticed that you are preparing another biography which you hope to submit to African Ciné Month. Your current draft contains 112 words of running text - so you will have to expand it quite a bit if you want to submit it. You also need to make sure it is backed by good secondary sources. I've moved it to Draft:Luchy Donalds with your preferred spelling. By comparison, Benneth Nwankwo now has 289 words of running text. @Preciousb101: Yes and no. THere are pseudo-competitions in an attempt to help reduce some of the many backlogs on pages such as WP:AFC which basically encourage editors to clear as much of the backlog as they can in the amount of time given (usually about a month). However these are never something any editor is required to participate in. Then there are bad competitions, which usually consist of content disputes and/or edit wars. They usually result from 2 editors who disagree with each other on what should be added to an article. However there are ways to avoid these types of competitions, mainly bold, revert, discuss, which is a process that can be used to prevent a content dispute from ever happening. You make a bold edit, it gets reverted, and then instead of immediately reverting again (which is the cause of many edit wars) you start a discussion on the talk page about the edit in hopes to reach a consensus. An example of a delayed version of this process is List of Roblox games which resulted from me making a bold edit (which is removing a whole section on the main Roblox article dedicated to popular games on Roblox), having it get reverted, and then a few months later (after I had immediately reverted again and then got reverted by the same user who reverted me last time) I started a discussion to possibly create a list dedicated to popular Roblox games which is how List of Roblox games came into existence. Olugold: The article seems to be coming along very well. You will see I have edited a bit to bring it in line with normal Wikipedia presentation. For example, I removed her age from the introduction and the box as it will no longer be correct next year. I also corrected the corresponding date of birth category and made some general copy edits. The weakest section of the article is "Selected filmography" which does not contain any references. It would probably be better just to include the movies for which you can find specific sources. The article currently runs to 192 words or 1221 bytes of running text (i.e. omitting titles, bullet points, etc.) which is sufficient for the Africa Ciné Contest. Okay, so you motivated me. We went from this pretty bad and uncited article (who does that on a BLP?) to what it is now. I am hoping and praying that you have time to look at it and give it a copyedit. The English needs to be "Britishized" (or is that Britishised?) and I am not at all sure about the writing section, as I never quite know what is important to put in. The only two things that I could not discover were whether she married Karl J. Stahl and what the name of her essay is in Schicksal Afrika? I removed the claim about Stahl because it is a BLP and I find nothing. I'm gonna ask GRuban to look at it too, he has found more photos for me. The writing section looks fine but somewhere you mention her non-fiction works without any further coverage under "Writing" although you do mention them under "Selected works". Here it might be useful to specify which are non-fiction and which are novels. I'm surprised nothing comes out of Authority control, although there's plenty in World Cat and she's also covered in LOC. Perhaps Rosie can help with this. It seems to me that articles like this do far more to promote an understanding of women's nationality issues than your country-by-country coverage, important though it is. Thank you both for your comments. I don't disagree that the stories are more fun to write (and help explain the impact) than the legalese, but I think the legalese is important background. When I write the legal overview, I intend to include both Arizmendi and Dow. Arizmendi because her situation explains so well how women ended up stateless. Dow because hers explains the issue of legitimacy/illegitimacy. There is a New Zealand woman, Miriam Soljak, whose story is illustrative of women who lost their nationality as enemy aliens through vagueness in the law, which seriously needs work too. I am sure there are tons of others I will uncover. I hope you enjoy her book Rosiestep. Going there now to look at the changes. If you can uncover answers for the 2 questions, Ian, that'd be great. I cannot tell you how many Hispanic women I have written about who have published tons and tons of works and have zero, zip, nada even in worldcat. On the works, I just looked at it again. I think it better to divide it into Academic and Literary than fiction and non-fiction. For example, I Know You Still Love Me and Saturday Is for Funerals are both non-fiction. Most accounts listed him as the author, but clearly he was the editor of other people's chapters. I'm working on the article on the case right now, as it was almost as bad as the article on Dow herself, but at least it had some references. I'll pop back to Dow in a bit. I am satisfied he is her husband. Enough of the details in the piece, (they will be at Columbia University together in 2009, High Court Judge, AIDs work, etc.) coincide. Besides which it solves another mystery. He says his wife is "a member of the Bakgatla tribe". I searched and searched for her indigenous heritage and only found that she referred to a great-grandmother who was Mosarwa. Just did a search and first found this (p 102) but that doesn't make it remotely clear if she is talking about herself or just giving an example. Then a found this "...High Court Judge, Unity Dow, and the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs, Segakweng Tsiane, both members of the Bakgatla tribe..." clenches it for me. Hi Ian, I have gotten drawn into helping try to get a DYK over the line but the reviewer is asking for a lot of edits, and I can't tell if he just doesn't want to pass it, or if this is really necessary for its approval. It's for Inger K. Frith, the first woman to run an international sports federation. It was initially posted by another editor, and three editors have now made edits to try to meet his demands, but the reviewer is not satisfied. Could you review it? The reviewer wants more details in all the references. I was going to give up but it seems a shame not to have it as A DYK; she is in interesting woman. I spent about 15 minutes going through the discussion but could not see any specific reference to "lies about machines translation" or whether this is a total, indefinite block. As for using machine translation, some of our most revered and competent editors use it with little or no knowledge of the language(s) in question.   • Gerda Arendt: I admire your fortitude on AN but I really don't want to get involved in the discussion there. As for "translating" articles from other language versions, I agree that as far as possible the EN version should include in-line references for each paragraph. Although a large percentage of my biographies are based on the fact that a person has been covered in another language (or appears in Wikidata), I seldom actually translate anything. Instead I try to find suitable sources and create the English version from scratch, frequently relying on recognized biographical dictionaries and data bases. This of course takes far longer that simply producing a rapidly post-edited machine translation but the result is far more reliable and keeps reviewers happy. Nevertheless, I certainly recognize that many excellent articles in the EN wiki have started out as word-for-word translations from versions in other languages. Providing editors like you are prepared to take the time and trouble to make improvements, this seems to be a good general approach to improvement. As you have emphasized yourself, the huge number of translations Louis has made from French and German represent a considerable enhancement of topics of cultural interest in the countries concerned. I don't know of any other editor who has bee able to create up to eight new articles a day on the basis of versions in other languages -- since May almost exclusively from German. As referencing in German is so different from that in English, your suggested template seems sensible but it could also attract closer examination by reviewers. I see coverage of Central European topics going to be reduced drastically, which is wrong if we want to fight the bias towards UK and U.S., but I'll let it go at this point. Since the above person also asked for help on a DYK nomination I'm wanting to ask you something. I'm wanting to nominate Euro Truck Simulator 2 for a DYK with something relating to how it's the first game to have a truck announced through it, however I'm refraining from doing so because of the requirements to actually nominate an article for a DYK. 1. New; the article I'm wanting to nomninate is definitely not new, however this confuses me as I often see older articles as a DYK.. 2. Length; I don't think this'll be too much of an issue. 3. Cited Hook; It says "The hook should include a definite fact that is mentioned in the article and interesting to a broad audience", the part I bolded I don't understand since most of the time the facts in DYK don't seem to fall under this criteria. 4. Within policy; I'm working on improving the article so I'll make sure it falls under Wikipedia's policies. 5. Review requirement (QPQ); this is the thing that is really preventing me from nominating it after I improve it, I don't feel like I would be able to properly review another DYK nom. It seems some edits, requested on the Talk Page (and heavily reviewed by a number of editors who were involved in the AfD) have been actioned. They have now been reverted by the very aggressive editor who identifies as an exclusionist - and instigated the original AfD of the page Sadia Sadia. My guess is that he's (I am assuming it's a he) is preparing to launch another AfD attack in a few months' time. Do you think you might review the page and the (recently reverted) edits and see where it stands? GreenForestRanger: I've looked into the passages which were added and subsequently deleted. The basic problem is the sourcing. Some of the sources are articles written by Sadia Sadia herself while others just contain her name without any supporting information. If you want to enhance the article, then I strongly suggest you draw on substantial reports from published books, recognized journals and newspapers or in critical assessments, including awards, etc. Loveboba is an unexperienced editor and has only ever edited on that one day, 7 November. It is not surprising the edits were not accepted.--Ipigott (talk) 11:27, 13 November 2021 (UTC)

I am not an academic, but I am a bit piffed about new editors (especially women) are treated. May I ask Does anyone know a female NPP? and Would being able to set their user page/talk to private/block certain people help? • Wakelamp: I'm not sure exactly what you are suggesting. Many women, including WiR collaborators, patrol new pages and take part in AfD discussions. I certainly don't think any would like to see restrictions on their user talk pages. There are nevertheless frequently problems when deserving articles are refused at AfC. This can discourage new contributors to the extent that some discontinue editing completely. Fortunately, as a number of WiR participants play an active role in AfC reviews, things have recently improved. We now have a bot-driven list of declined drafts, some of which are found suitable for mainspace. If you are interested, you could see if there are any you consider suitable or which deserve to be brought up to mainspace requirements. I see you have created three biographies yourself (all on men). It would be good to see a few on women. If you need any assistance, just let me know.--Ipigott (talk) 12:58, 5 December 2021 (UTC)

  Thank-you for answering the questions - there is no need to post. I have just spent most of my time as an editor being a wiki-gnome on IP or wakelamp. I won't add all the refs for the points below as I now understand that this is not part of WiRs remit.

  1. I tried to create a female bio one - Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Brandon Merrill I wrote 'My concern is that what may be an acceptable notability for a dominant cultures such as China and America, may not be for minorities who may not have the same options". Then I read notability, saw the high failure rate, and gave up. (I don't actually remember the men :-)).
  2. I am glad that there are women doing NPP. Some articles showed that imale editors were far less likely to create low character edits (a sign of npp), and far more likely to create content, collarboarate, avoid conflict, have their talk answered, ... Experienced women editors tend to be more ok with conflict, but there seems to be a link for prolific female editors to leave after a series of reverts, conflict on article talk, followed by conflict on their talk.
  3. The ability to block a particular user was to create a safe place, An RfC recently discussed semi protect of user, but it thought it unjustified based on the number of requests. This was both

  • Selection bias, as the current policies advise you not to complain - Wikipedia:Harassment#User_space_harassment, Wikipedia:KEEPOFF "it is not enforceable to tell someone to stay of your talk page", Wikipedia:RPA "Removing unquestionable personal attacks from your own user talk page is RARELY a matter of concern.", "Similarly, discussion of a user's conduct or history is not in itself a personal attack when done in the appropriate forum for such discussion (for example, the other editor's talk page, ..." , but this disagrees with [Universal code], WP:AVOIDYOU, WP:HOUNDING and Wikimedia terms of use
  • observor bias. As RfC editors, are far more likely to be or know admins who can semi-protect their page

• Wakelamp: Sorry to see you were not successful with your first bio of a woman. Next time, please let me know while you are preparing your draft and I'll probably be able to help you along. You shouldn't give up. Many new contributors experience problems but manage to learn how to succeed. As for all your other comments in connection with the article, I think it is important to put things in context. The paper was written almost three years ago and appears to be based on experience over a lengthy period beforehand. As I mentioned earlier, the degree of harassment has not been so serious since the WMF took decisive action against it. Finally, in my opinion, most of the upsetting exchanges do not occur on the talk pages of the editors involved but rather on other talk pages such as those of the editors who initiate the problem or on sites dealing with article deletions, etc.--Ipigott (talk) 07:10, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
