In spite of early negative reaction from fans, Secrets Don't Make Friends received mixed to positive critical reception. Allmusic's Matt Collar praised the album's "driving, power pop-influenced rock tunes delivered with a sense of manic pop culture fun".[1] James Shotwell of Under the Gun Review said, "Rocky Love Emily have realized the commonality of themes and sounds in the pop genre, added to the mix a year spent growing up on the road, and damn near flawlessly designed an album that never has a dull moment."[2] Indie Vision Music's Carter Fraser warned that for "listeners easily turned off by cheese, RLE is not going to be your cup of tea. But for those who can tolerate even just a little of it, Secrets Don’t Make Friends might be a pleasant surprise. Don’t expect an album-of-the-year dark horse, but it’s worth a listen."[3] I Am Tuned Up founder Ryan Getz declared the album "a guilty-pleasure, hook-laden record that will be perfect for blasting throughout the summer."[4] Sergio Pereira of MusicReview praised it as "a winning album": "Not just focusing on cheap hooks or sickening lyrics that’ll make your children go stupid, Secrets Don’t Make Friends boasts strong compositions and appealing melodies."[5]

Less positive reactions came from Rockfreaks.net editor-in-chief Petteri Pertola: "Secrets Don't Make Friends is fortunately not as awful as it could've been, if you opt to take it lightly and not as a serious contender for acclaim, critical or otherwise. Almost all songs are catchy and radio ready, but their problem lies more in the field of longevity...For this scribe, going beyond four listens to the album's songs seems like an implausible task precisely because the record is so shallow in its content. For teenagers though, this is pure gold."[6] Similarly, Already Heard's assistant editor Michael Brown concluded that "Rocky Loves Emily certainly know how to write pop rock hits, but they need to keep them coming and rolling out of the factory like the real big hitters."[7]
