In a June 1, 2017 interview with Fox News, after President Trump announced the US would be withdrawing from the Paris Agreement, Pence said, "We've demonstrated real leadership. We've demonstrated real progress. But for some reason or another, this issue of climate change has emerged as a paramount issue for the left in this country and around the world."[1]
Healthcare edit
On January 18, 2017, Vice President-elect Pence pledged the Republican replacement for the Affordable Care Act would "make health insurance affordable for everyone" during an appearance on CNN.[2] On February 23, during his speech to the 2017 CPAC, Pence said, "America's ObamaCare nightmare is about to end."[3] During a June 21 appearance at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Pence said, "Today, my fellow Americans here can be assured before the summer is out — working with the Congress — President Donald Trump will keep his promise to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act."[4] Amid a July 10 guest appearance on the Laura Ingraham radio show, Pence said President Trump and himself were "very close" to Senate Republicans constructing the Affordable Care Act replacement.[5] During remarks at the National Retail Federation summit in Washington on July 18, Pence called on congressional Republicans to hastily pass legislation repealing the Affordable Care Act and said, "Obamacare has failed, and Obamacare must go."[6] During a speech at the Ohio Republican Party dinner in Columbus, Ohio on July 22, Pence advocated for Senate Republicans to overhaul the Affordable Care Act.[7] During an August 4 speech to the National Conservative Student Conference, Pence stated the commitment shared by President Trump and himself in enacting policies against the Affordable Care Act: "We were not elected to save Obamacare - we were elected to repeal and replace it."[8]
North Korea edit
On April 19, 2017, while speaking above the USS Ronald Reagan at the Japanese Yokosuka Naval Base, Pence spoke of what the US was prepared to do in the event of escalation by North Korea: "We will defeat any attack and meet any use of conventional or nuclear weapons with an overwhelming and effective American response."[9] On June 27, in response to India committing to using economic clout as a means of rebuking North Korea for the nuclear and missile programs of the country, Pence praised India for the move and said the "greatest threat facing the peace and prosperity of Indo-Pacific region is the brutal regime in North Korea".[10] During a July 30 interview with Fox News, Pence said the administration believed China "should do more" in regards to North Korea.[11] On August 16, Pence met with President of Chile Michelle Bachelet and held a joint press conference with her in which he called on countries to align with the US against North Korea: "We strongly urge Chile today — and we urge Brazil, Mexico and Peru — to break all diplomatic and commercial ties to North Korea."[12]
