Battle for Dream Island (commonly shortened to BFDI) is an American fictional-competition comedy-drama reality web series created by Michael and Cary Huang. The series is published on the Huang brothers' YouTube channel jacknjellify. BFDI is a spoof of the Total Drama series, itself a spoof of the Survivor franchise, starring inanimate objects, competing for a grand prize that changes with every season. It is based off of an old comic book called Total Firey Island by Cary Huang. Each episode features a competition between at least two teams of objects, and an elimination ceremony where at least one character is voted off by the audience.

Outside of YouTube, the series has branched out into several other pieces of media, such as an online game based on the fifth episode of season 2,[1] and merchandise, including an official character guide published by Scholastic[2] and various pieces of media, such as stuffed dolls and clothes.[3]

Origin edit

Total Firey Island, an 18 issue book series, is the earliest parallel to Battle for Dream Island. However, it is not the earliest piece of media related to the series. The earliest piece of media that served as a precursor to the series was the so-called "First BFDI Drawing EVER!" (also known as "FIREY to keep our customers happy"). It was made in may of 2008 as part of Cary Huang's fifth grade assignment to make a fake catalog. The last page of said catalog featured a 14-panel comic about 5 sentient objects that would later be featured in BFDI. The comic was not about a competition, instead, it was a comedic story about Firey's ability to burn anything he pleases. Besides Firey, the comic also featured Woody, Teardrop, Match and Spongy.[4]

Several more Firey-related comics would be created, but Total Firey Island (a spoof of Total Drama Island) was the most important one, as it served as a precursor to what would become BFDI, and it is dubbed "Season 0" by fans. 16 contestants were featured in this season, and they were split onto 2 teams of 8 (Murder Trout and Yelling Beavers, inspired by the teams from Total Drama Island, Killer Bass and Screaming Gophers). In order of elimination, the contestants were: Eraser, Golf Ball, Flower, Woody, Building Block (renamed Blocky), Rocky, Spongy, Firey, Tennis Ball, Teardrop, Match, Coiny, Bubble, Ice Cube, Snowball and Pencil (winner). Many ideas from Total Firey Island were carried over into BFDI, such as: the crying contest from book 1, which was reused in the episode "Crybaby", a challenge from book 2 where the players have to stand on a balance beam longer than the others (reused in the pilot, "Take the Plunge, part 1"), a racing challenge from book 3 reused in "The Rescission", and miscellaneous plot points.[5] There were 18 books,[5] but only 9 of them were fully released to the public.[6][7][8] Nothing about books 10–18 is known, other than the elimination order.

A sequel was mentioned in book 18, titled Total Firey Switch, but it was cancelled. A sequel was eventually created, titled Total Firey Points. In a 2021 YouTube upload, Cary Huang recovered and showed all the lost books, and he has plans to release them all at one point.[9]

All the ideas from the aforementioned books inspired Cary and Michael Huang to create a flash-animated YouTube competition series. The prize was changed from 100,000 USD to a luxurious island called Dream Island. The number of competitors went from 16 to 20 (later 21), and the viewers were to ones who voted players off, using the comment section.

Overview edit

Season 1 (2010—2012) edit

Battle for Dream Island (season 1) follows 20 sentient objects who have lived in a land called Goiky together all their lives. Their leisurely life is interrupted when a TV host simply named Announcer offers them a prize: a luxurious paradise called Dream Island. All 20 objects are eager to win the prize, and so they compete in a contest. The two lucky winners are Pin and Leafy, who are unexpectedly instructed to select 9 contestants to compete on their teams. In the end, after the teams are merged, only one competitor will be left standing.
