Legacy edit

In her career, Rihanna has amassed more than two dozen hits on the major charts around the world. She has become an icon and a global superstar.[1] She has won multiple records in the Guinness World Records, noting titles as the first woman in the UK to have five number one singles in five consecutive years, the singer with most number one singles in a year and the artist with most digital number one singles in the United States.[2][3] Rihanna has been named the best-selling digital artist of all time in the United States, having sold 47,571,000 million singles and albums.[4] Billboard named Rihanna the Digital Songs Artist of the 2000s decade, and ranked her as the seventeenth artist of the same decade.[5][6] Rihanna is the youngest artist to achieve a total of eleven number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and the only one doing it in less than seven years.

Ke$ha is one of many artists who have said that she admires Rihanna

In 2011, the Italian Vogue named Rihanna the 'Woman of the Year', quoting: "It’s her, Rihanna, once a rising star of the R and B scene, she is currently the undisputed best contender to the role of queen of pop," continued quoting: "Independent, energetic, the young Robyn Rihanna Fenty (only 23) is our woman of the year and not just by virtue of numbers and figures but also, and foremost, for her kind and fighting spirit. The same spirit that brought her from Barbados to the top of the music charts achieving a career which she has forged and mastered completely by herself."[7] The magazine also named her woman of the decade, along with Beyonce, for her influence and success.[8] In 2012 the magazine was given the title 'Woman of the Year' for the second consecutive year.[9][10] The magazine Rolling Stone named her one of the biggest stars in pop music, to emerge in the 2000s.[11] The artist was at number twenty of the most influential people of 2011 voted by Time readers.[12] In October 2011, Prefix magazine placed Rihanna at number two on the list of the best female R&B singers.[13] MTV has named the singer as the biggest star and Caribbean Queen.[14] In 2012 the magazine Time named Rihanna on of the 100 most influential people in the world. Stella McCartney said:

I can't remember when Rihanna and I first met, but I think it was near a dance floor and one of her tracks was playing. The thing I remember was her being a normal person, not what you'd expect of a young woman about to take over the world. She's one of the coolest, hottest, most talented, most liked, most listened to, most followed, most impressive artists at work today, but she does it in her own stride. She works hard, very hard. She gives to her fans, friends and foundation not just herself but her energy and spirit. Rihanna, 24, goes out of her way to support the people she believes in. She is one of the few people I know in that world of fame and celebrity who aren't all about themselves. She'll give a real part of herself to an ordinary person she may meet, and that's rare. This is the beginning for Rihanna — she has so much more to do and to give. She is just getting going, so watch out. She's the Barbados ambassador for youth and culture, and she's coming to a town near you.

— Stella McCartney, [15]

In 2009, Rihanna was named 'Woman of the Year' by fashion magazine Glamour.[16] The magazine also named her one of the hottest celebrities of 2012.[17] She was also given the title 'Sexiest Woman Alive' by Esquire magazine.[18] Rihanna was also ranked the fourth most powerful celebrity in 2012 with earnings of $53 million between May 2011 and May 2012, according to Forbes.[19] The singer is the female person with the most "likes" on the social network Facebook.[20] She is also the first woman to pass 2 billion views on the website YouTube.[21]

The singer has been inspired and influenced countless singers like Rita Ora, who said: "I admire Rihanna. She works her ass off. That work ethic and discipline is hardcore. That's the kind of s**t that I want to do. That I will do."[22] Cheryl Cole said she admires the singer saying: "You know what I love about Rihanna? I know she gets a lot of criticism, too, about what she wears and what she sings about, but she is so free," she explained. "She doesn’t give two f**ks. I love that in her. I love that sense of freedom about her. She’s gorgeous and free. A perfect pop star."[23] Selena Gomez said of the singer: "I think she’s very strong and classy. I look up to that. She carries herself very well."[24] Also other artists like Jessie J,[25] Demi Lovato,[26] Rebecca Black,[27] Justin Bieber,[28] Christina Aguilera,[29] Ke$ha,[30] Willow Smith and Lindsay Lohan.[31] Rihanna has also inspired fashion houses and designers like Chanel, Gucci, Giorgio Armani, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Stella McCartney and Giles Deacon.[32][33]
