WP:is a MUD
The Wikipedia is a multi-user dungeon (is a MUD) flavored by Nomic.
Characteristics matching a MUD edit
The Wikipedia has many characteristics of a text-based MUD:[1]
- It is populated with multiple users over a globally distributed computing network.[2]
- Users assume character roles ranging from near-realistic human to utterly fantastic non-human.[3] There is a latent tendency for some users to become addicted to play.[4] This addiction may be a part of some delusion that the MUD is real or at least real enough to be legally binding.[5][6][7]
- Characters can create things out of nothing at all to score points.[12]
- Some characters use a spell to make things re-appear.[15]
- Characters with a socially-sufficient number of MUD points can earn promotions to higher levels.[16][17][18]
- Other characters who are considered socially unacceptable can be killed off.[19]
- Dead characters may become un-dead.[20]
- Characters may engage in quests by combining with other characters as a means of dominating portions of the MUD.[21]
Nomic flavoring edit
One of the most interesting characteristics of the Wikipedia is the ability of all anonymous and logged-in users to create and modify the article-chambers of the MUD with the powers of a Dungeon Master.[22] These MUD changes are ratified or opposed by a consensus of other users who are recursively able to make their own amendments to the amendments to the MUD.[23] Basic DM capabilities are a property of all characters, and advanced DM capabilities are part of promotions to higher levels.[24]
