About HoneyBadger4 edit

Honey Badger is simply a common code name that I use. I started editing Wikipedia in medical school in an effort to encourage cohesive multidisciplinary communication. Medicine has been isolated from the world for such a long time that it has developed an archaic and esoteric language. Many contemporary students, doctors, and educators are attempting to change this by replacing the old language (centered around human names or eponyms) with modern nouns based in descriptive Latin and Greek terms. The use of this language allows allied health professionals to communicate effectively across discipline and culture. It also greatly simplifies the process of learning and discussing medicine as many of the nouns give the speaker a rough idea of what the disease or anatomical entity it describes. When a student sees the word Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia he or she can derive a wealth of information about the condition. This simplifies associating a name with a condition and reduces the background necessary to enter a discussion. This style of nomenclature requires the speaker to learn and apply a language rather than memorize an encyclopedia of random names (Many of which become redundant). In contrast, Osler-Weber-Rendu Disease gives no hint at its topic and forces the user to memorize three unrelated names and associate them with the condition. I am joining this community to help expand the use of these contemporary terms. I believe encouraging communication by a common language will improve communication between scientists, the lay public, and the healthcare community as a whole.
