Mohammad Khodabanda (also spelled Khodabandeh; Persian: شاه محمد خدابنده; 1532 – 1595) was the Safavid shah of Iran from 1578 to 1587. He was the brother and successor of Ismail II (r. 1576–1577).
Biography edit
Mohammad Khodabanda was born in 1532.[1] Khodabanda (meaning "the slave of God"[2]) had been his nickname since his childhood.[3] He was the eldest son of Tahmasp I.[2] His mother was Sultanum Begum, a member of the Turkoman Mawsillu tribe.[1] He had a full-brother named Ismail II, who was approximately five years younger than him.[4]
At the age of six, he was installed as the governor of Khorasan, accompanied by Sharaf al-Din Aghlitaklu as his guardian and amir al-umara (commander-in-chief) of the region.[3]
