I'll jump in later, but for my part, serve the reader is what matters, everything else is mostly noise. What gets the info across to (our best guess of) the majority/plurality of readers, with the least mental work (having to stop and work something out, if only for a fraction of a second (it adds up).) For my part, I could care less what Better Than You: The Magazine of Modern Snobbery or whomever does, or head-of-a-pinning interpretation of what we've got written; but not much. (If there is a clear large majority for one particular way, that's a worthwhile data point, keeping in mind that Popular History: the Poorly Researched Magazine for The Masses, circulation 50,000, counts a lot more than The Harvard/Oxford Journal of History Articles to Impress Other Academics circulation 2,000).
