Woo Won-jae (Korean우원재; born December 23, 1996), also known by his moniker Munch (Korean뭉크), is a South Korean rapper.[1]

Career

edit

Woo Won-Jae has first shown up to the public through the South Korean TV program, Show Me the Money 6 on 2017. Show Me the Money 6 is a South Korean rap competition TV show aired on MNET. Over 12000 contestants auditioned in this season and Woo was one of them too.[2] In this season of ‘Show Me the Money’ that numerous returning contestants from previous seasons and veteran rappers participated,[3] Woo passed through various intense competitions and finished in third place as a pure amateur status. Since so many famous and skillful rappers applied for this program all together, it was tremendous success for Woo to win a third prize.[4] He had gained a lot of popularity throughout the show.

Woo made his debut through releasing a single "We Are (시차)", featuring Gray and Loco on September 4, 2017. The single was meant for Woo's final 2 stage in the finals of Show Me The Money 6, but he was eliminated in the top 3 round. The song made a successful all-kill in numerous Korean charts.[5] This song also brought a lot of awards for Woo including 32nd Golden Disc Awards and ‘Hip-hop track of the year’ for Korean Hip-hop awards 2018.

On October 31, 2017 it was announced that Woo has signed with hip hop label AOMG.[6] Following the signing, he released a single album titled "Anxiety" (불안) on November 2, 2017.[7]

Woo on Show me the Money 6

edit

On the first round of Show Me the Money 6, Woo got judged by Tiger JK who is one of the oldest and most famous figures in South Korean hip-hop scene. Woo performed his rap with extremely dark, depressed tone lyrics and captured public’s interest at once- Later at the final of the show, he confessed that he is suffering mental disorders and his lyrics were largely affected by this factor.[8] Then, he passed the first round easily with Tiger JK’s great compliments. Due to this his great impact on first appearance, he was even nominated as third ranker of the whole program by other contestants too. He also passes second and third round with overwhelming performances and public’s fervent supports. His unique fashion style was always big topic and even celebrities on the TV shows parodied him.[9] ‘Woo Won-Jae’ himself became a kind of trend to people and it looked like he would only go through broad and level road of success.

However, Woo faces big crisis on fourth round of the show. It was random cypher mission that he had to do impromptu rap on totally random beat. Unlike his dark and negative tone rapping style, very bright and rhythmical beat was given to his turn and it was his very first time for him to do cypher. As a result, Woo fails to elicit his best ability on this mission and public start to set a stereotype on him that he is bit monotonous style rapper who always remains the same genre.

Fortunately, Woo made it to revalorize himself as the show runs toward the end. Instead of feeling stress on changing his style on rapping, he chose to focus on maximizing his strength and this strategy worked perfectly. His poetic lyrics really induced ardent supports from the public and even generated mimickers of his rapping style. Although he failed to win the show and got a third prize, people evaluate him as a ‘real’ winner of the show.[10] Through Show Me the Money 6, public obtained this very new stylish rapper and Woo made enormous fandom.

Even more, he participated in some songs from other rap competition programs such as high school rapper or show me the money 777 too.[11] He mentioned that he is now preparing for his own new album but when this album would be released is not very sure.
