Markku Uimonen

Markku Uimonen (born in Helsinki in 1965) is a Finnish visual designer in the performing arts.

He studied at the Lighting and Sound Design Department of the Theatre Academy Helsinki from 1986 to 1989 [1] and at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts[2] from 1989 to 1990. He graduated with a Master's degree in Theatre Arts in 1991. As a Fulbright scholar, he pursued further studies at the MIT[3] School of Architecture's Center for Advanced Visual Studies from 1992 to 1993.

Uimonen has worked as a set designer, lighting designer, and projection designer in Finland, as well as abroad in Sweden, France, Italy, and Hong Kong.

He served as the Artistic Director of the LUX Helsinki Light Art Festival[4] from 2011 to 2014. He was appointed as a set designer at the Folkteatern in Gothenburg from 1993 to 1995, and has been a freelancer in approximately 60 professional productions.

From 2018 to 2019, Uimonen worked as a lighting designer at ALA Architects[5] and was involved in the design of lighting for Helsinki-Vantaa Airport and Kivenlahti metro station.

Teaching:

- Part-time lecturer at the Theatre Academy Helsinki from 1993 to 1999.

- Lecturer in set design at the University of Art and Design Helsinki (currently Aalto University[6]) from 1997 to 1999.

- Professor of Lighting Design at the Theatre Academy Helsinki (later part of the University of the Arts Helsinki) from 2000 to 2014.

- Visiting professor at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts from 2000 to 2013. -

Visiting professor in the set design department of the Norwegian Theatre Academy from 2007 onwards. –

Additionally, Uimonen has given (keynote) speeches and lectures at numerous international seminars and conferences in countries such as the United States, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, France, China, and Japan.

Organizational Work: Uimonen served as a board member of OISTAT[7] (International Organisation of Scenographers, Theatre Architects and Technicians) from 1998 to 2015. He is a founding member of the Finnish Light Art Society[8] (FLASH) since 2016.

Awards:

- IRIS Award from the Finnish Color Association[9] in 2015.

- Knight of the Order of the White Rose of Finland, 1st Class[10] in 2009..
