This first Almshouse in the United States history was founded in Boston, Massachusetts in 1622. The Almshouse was located right in the center of the town and was progressively shifted to the outer town limits, or countryside. Initially the people of Boston took it upon themselves to have the poor, and disabled close by, as a part of the community despite their codependence. As time goes on we see that Almshouses are pushed further from urban areas, and we see the meaning practically shift as the term "Almshouse," develops a derogatory connotation. This could be related to the relationship with able-bodied and disabled persons, due to the gradual outcasting in modern society of the disabled community.
