Samuel Thomas Hannagan YMP (born 5 January 1990) is a New Zealand political activist and Youth Member of Parliament living in Kerepehi, New Zealand. Sam is a strong supporter of the South Island Independence Movement, who advocates the dissolution of New Zealand and the creation of the independent state of Zealandia in the South Island.










Early life and family edit

Sam was born in Dunedin, New Zealand to middle class parents. His family history can be traced back to England.

Sam lived in Dunedin until the age of two, before moving to the North Island and over the next 16 years he would live in 11 different houses.

In 2001, Sam's parents split up, and later that year he moved to his current residence in Kerepehi. Shortly after arriving the tragic events of September 11 took place.

Sam finished his primary school education at Kerepehi School, before heading to Hauraki Plains College. During Sam's college years he attended several different events including a New Zealand Army Student Work Experience programe and New Zealands 5th Youth Parliament.

5th New Zealand Youth Parliament edit

Sam was Selected to attend the 5th New Zealand Youth Parliament by National Party MP for Coromandel Sandra Goudie. Sam sat on the Law and Order Select Committee which reviewed the Youth Justice System. Sam spoke about changing New Zealands Nuclear Free Policy during the general debate. Sam was one of the 53 Youth Members to vote down the government bill tittled 'Household Response to Climate Change Bill'.

South Island Indpendence edit

Sam is a supporter of South Island Independence and has proposed that all the New Zealand possessions south of Cook Strait should be formed into the independent nation of Zealandia. Zealandia would comprise of the South Island, the Chatham Islands, Stewart Island, the Sub-Antarctic islands and the Ross Dependency. Sam also believes that the new nations should adopt a Republican Constitution

Hauraki District Youth Forum edit

Sam has been a member of the Hauraki District Youth Forum since September 2007 and is currently serving as Secretary. Sam is currently pushing for further progression of the forum including the change from forum status to Council status.

Other Roles edit

Referee, Touch New Zealand edit

Sam is currently reffing in his 5th season, reffing module touch rugby, and secondary school tournaments in the Thames Valley. Sam in February 2008 was one of many referee's to take part in the IPS touch tournament in Paeroa.

Independent Critic edit

Sam has undertaken some minor reviewing, primarily focused around youth entertainment. Of these Sam has focused considerably on the Naked Brothers Band, serving both strong condemnations and strong praises over the course of two seasons and two albums. In October 2008, Sam officially gave his 'endorsement' for both the show and music. Later that month Sam condemned the decision for the structure of the shows 3rd season, going so far as not to call it a season merely a "collection of movies." Sam has also been heavily critical of popular youth networks including Viacom assets Nickelodeon and MTV, while being equally as harsh on other competitors such as Disney and Cartoon Network

Viewer Advocacy edit

In 2009, become involved in advocating the viewer voice against Nickelodeon. Initially representing fans of the Naked Brothers Band with the Naked Brothers Band Fan Association, he has since expanded across the board. He has been extremely critical of Nickelodeon's recent actions. As an opponent of Nickelodeons new logo, he has called it "A direct reflection of the company itself, cold, sterile and lacking in character." Amongst his claims is that "Nickelodeon no longer cares about it's viewers, just their money." The extent of his support is largely unknown due to a preference to use email as the main method of communication.

Future Plans edit

Sam intends to further is political roles through out the near future and eventually devote all his time to such task. Sam is also believed to be looking into a career in the film industry or the New Zealand Army
