Calder Dairy is a Michigan Dairy Farm whose mission statement is to combine modern dairying with a strong commitment to producing premium dairy products. The farm is still family owned and operated daily. The do not used hormones at all and use recyclable glass bottles. If you live in the Down River area, they will deliver to your door.

History

Calder Dairy was originally established in 1946 by William Graham Stewart Calder. Milk was purchased from other surrounding dairy farms and then sent to their proccessing plant in Lincoln Park, Michigan where it was proccessed and bottled. In 1950, William Calder purchased a farm in Carleton, Michigan as a weekend retreat. The farm slowly turned into the main source for the farms milk with 138 cows milked on a daily basis. The dairy is still family owned and operated with three generations involved on a daily basis. [1]

Animals

Calder Dairy is home to 138 cows. Their herd consists of Holstein, Brown Swiss, and Jersey cows. On the farm they also have goats, pigs, turkeys, horses, and chickens. [2]

Products

Calder Dairy produces a variety of products including buttermilk, sour cream, egg nog, chocolate milk, french onion chip dip, half and half, cottage cheese, and of course ice cream. [3]

Ice Cream

The ice cream base is made at the dairy and then brought to the plant in Lincoln Park. Each container is filled by hand and shipped to both locations. They currently have 34 flavors of hand scooped ice cream. [4]

Community Involvement

Calder Dairy is actively involved in Monroe County 4-H. The farm also teaches the local community the importance of safe practices around animals and educates them on the proccess of dairy farming.
