GK Sudeep - Author, Journalist, Poet and Screenwriter

Gulshan Kumar Sudeep, known mononymously as Sudeep (1 April 1942 – 25 June 2020) was a 20th & 21st century Indian author, novelist, journalist, screenwriter, playwright and poet.

Early life & Education

Born on 1 April 1942, in the Gojramandi district of Punjab in British India to parents Bishamber Das and Gyandeyi Narang. He was merely five years old in 1947, when the partition of the post-independence India caused his family to get displaced from West Punjab region (today in Pakistan) temporarily to Kurukshetra in modern day India. His childhood was spent in Panipat and Delhi followed by latter years in Mumbai.

From the young age of fourteen, young Gulshan Kumar began writing poems and songs. By the age of seventeen, he was already acknowledged by peers in high school leagues as an upcoming rising poet. It is said, that in 1959, in India, while attending a recital event for prestigious national poets - the nation’s most renowned & beloved poet Suryakant Tripathi Nirala heard Gulshan Kumar’s poetry and conferred upon him the nick name ‘Sudeep’ which he endearingly picked up as his pen name from then onwards for rest of his life.

In 1963 he set a record by being the first bachelor's degree student from Arts discipline to receive a gold medal at Agra University. He graduated from University of Delhi in 1965 with Master of Arts degree with major in English Literature.

Author

He is the author of four short-story collections[1], three novels, four biographies. More than sixty of his short stories have been published in various Indian magazines and book anthologies. Though he authored most works in Hindi language, many of his works are translated into English, Malayalam, Punjabi, Marathi and other languages. His creative heritage also includes published translations of five Punjabi novels.

His most recent released books include Panipat ki Yaaden[2] (2024) and Anhad Naad (re-released as e-book in 2024).

Journalism and Editorship

His journalist career initiated as trainee at Times of India Group. In fourteen years at the company, he grew from being sub-editor of many magazines including Dharmayug (1967, 1984-88), Sarika (1970-75) and Ravivar (1977-78) to becoming chief editor of multiple publications including Nutan Savera, Chic (1979-80) and Shree Warsha (1980-82). He was the executive editor of Screen (1993) and Hamara Mahanagar news publication and Special Correspondent for Sunday Mail (1992-93). Sudeep brought many of India’s weekly and monthly magazines to their peak performance while serving in editorial roles for these publications.

In 2000, the Mumbai Press Club honored Sudeep with the Lifetime Achievement Award[3] for his immense journalistic contribution.

Film & TV

He also worked as a screenwriter for Indian films and television industry.  Sudeep wrote dialogues, scripts, screenplays, short stories for Indian films and TV series – and many even received National Awards. He was the writer for children movie 'Ankur, Maina Aur Kabootar' which won India's Best Children's Film Award[4] in 1990. He was researcher and writer for renowned industrialist Jamnalal Bajaj's biographical film 'Kathni Karni Ek Si' which won India's Best Historical Recreation National Award in 1990.

Later Years

After prolonged illness and lung cancer, Sudeep passed away on June 25, 2020, in Mumbai, India. Sudeep will forever be remembered, and his legacy will stand as pillar of the common man’s word – written and spoken.
