Second Thoughts are an English indie rock band from Hertfordshire, formed in 2018. The band consists of Ben Campbell (vocals, guitar), Jude McCreath (vocals, guitar), Clara Freeman-Taylor (vocals, bass), and David Addison (drums).

The band are known for their thoughtful lyrics and ear-worm choruses [1] often touching on personal and relatable subjects. Their first song 'wonderhow' released in 2019 as a single and has since been followed by numerous singles as well as 3 EPs. They have performed live at a variety of venues across the United Kingdom, usually being featured in music festivals[2].

History

edit

Ben and Jude first formed the band in 2018 at school in a GSCE music class during a class project, they quickly realized their musical potential working together and created the band before later adding David and Clara[3]. Their first unofficial name was created by Ben and was much longer, with them later shortening it down to just ‘second thoughts’ for readability[3].

After their first official release in 2019, they would go on to produce a variety of singles and EPs, with their most popular set of songs releasing in 2021 in their EP titled 'stay hydrated'. It was this release that allowed them to be picked up by the record label ‘Lab Records[4]. The band has had no notable performances on the charts, with their most successful song being 'parachute' having amassed just under 5 million streams on Spotify as of March 2024[5]. They released two other EPs, “nicotine stains” in 2022, and “fluke” in 2023, on average releasing one a year.

The band would go on to do the United Kingdom’s summer music festival circuit every year since 2021, among a few other smaller venue gigs[2]. As a smaller band they have struggled to obtain notability outside of England, and have instead utilized social media like TikTok, and Instagram to connect with fans[3]. Their members have made comments surrounding the current state of the music industry, stating that they wish it was more accessible, more diverse, and that more events were ran by musicians themselves[6].

Musical style

edit

Second Thoughts has been described as having "elements of nostalgia, playfulness and vibrancy" which combines both old and new indie rock influences[7]. The members of the band themselves have stated that bands like The Lemonheads and Radiohead have acted as some of their top influences for their music[7]. Other interpretations of their music have noted their energetic guitar and percussion, that create a "narrative that is reminiscent of the often-conflicting emotions met in young-adulthood"[8].
