editOn February 23, 2023, the Bruins traded Smith, along with a first-round pick in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, a third-round pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, and a second-round pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, to the Washington Capitals, receiving defenseman Dmitry Orlov and forward Garnet Hathaway in exchange.[1] Smith was included in the trade to help the Bruins with the NHL salary cap, and there was some speculation he would be moved again before the trading deadline, which Smith ignored in favor of carving out a role on his new team.[2][3] The trade reunited Smith with coach Peter Laviolette and teammate Matt Irwin, both of whom he had played with in Nashville.[2][3] In 22 games following the trade, Smith had five goals and six points for Washington, who missed the postseason for the first time since 2014.[4]
