In 2012, GamesRadar ranked him as the 32th "most memorable, influential, and badass" protagonist in games,[3] also listing Cole as the seventh most badass game characters of the generation.[4] Complex ranked him as having the eighth best fighting game cameos for his guest appearances in Street Fighter X Tekken,[5] and as the thirty-fourth "most badass" video game character of all time[6] as well as the eleventh "most acrobatic characters in video games". They described Cole "as something in between" the "low-to-the-ground-bruiser like Wolverine" and the "flexible fighter with a swimmer’s build like Spiderman", and called him "a Jedi, but without the rags or the Imperial helmets."[7] In 2012, IGN cited Cole among the "Gaming's Most Notorious Anti-Heroes", adding he "is surely one of the biggest antiheroes of this generation."[8] Kotaku's Evan Narcisse lamented the fact that Cole will not return to other Infamous games after his death in Infamous 2, describing him as "the best superhero video games have ever produced".[9]

In 2006, Kage-Maru was featured on The Armchair Empire's for Top 10: Best Ninjas, adding "[i]t's hard to forget Kage's flip attack on a downed opponent where he slams both feet right down on his or her face. It's even harder to forget when he hits them in the crotch.".[15] In 2010, PC World included him in their list of top ten video game ninja characters at number seven, ridiculing his "Richard Garriott headband" but applauding him for "an authentic simulation of Jujutsu" and that Kage-Maru is one of the more realistic depictions of ninjas in gaming.[16] IGN's Akira Mark Fujita said Kage is "by far my favorite character", prasing his "good moves, cool combos", and the fact him being a ninja, but criticizing his follow up due to his jumps and kicks "are extremely slow."[17]
