Helen Varley Jamieson

edit

Helen Varley Jamieson, is a Munich based digital media artist from New Zealand. Helen Varley Jamieson "is engaged in an ongoing exploration of the collision between theatre and the internet" [1] and since she has been working on the internet professionally. In the year 2000 Helen Varley Jamieson coined the term cyberformance. This term is a combination of two words, cyberspace and performance. Helen Varley Jamieson created this term because "came out of the need to find a word that avoided the polarisation of virtual and real, and the need for a new term (rather than 'online performance' or 'virtual theatre') for a new genre" [2] Cyberformance refers to a performance that happens on-line in real time; however, is not just limited to on-line space, it can incorporate physical space as well. For example, one of Helen Varley Jamieson's collaborations with Desktop Theater entitled Water(war)s was "a performance installation directed by Jill Greenhalgh; participation in 3 of the 8 events (Brisbane 2003, Belgrade 2002, Holstebro 2001) involving cyberformance, text, images, research and performance collaboration" [3].

Helen Varley Jamieson has been the project manager of the on-line performance platform Upstage since 2003 and is one of the founding members of the Avatar Body Collision troupe.

In 2008 Helen Varley Jamieson completed a MA (research) degree in Cyberformance from Queensland University of Technology entitled "Adventures in Cyberformance: experiments at the interface of theatre and the internet" [4] .
