My Little Pony: Alicorns Ponies is an American–Canadian animated television series produced by DHX Media and Hasbro Studios and premiered on the network The Hub on February 6, 2012. The series focuses on Twilight Sparkle hoping to become an Alicorns one day and hoping that she could be exactly like the Princess sisters, Princesses Celestia and Luna. The series was criticized for its dark humour, meaning it had dark comedy in it. When the series premiered, it premiered after an episode of the 2010 series Pound Puppies. The series was created by Megan McCarthy, who worked on My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic for the rest of the series.

The story begins when Twilight Sparkle is hoping to become an Alicorn one day (she became one in the season 3 finale Magical Mystery Cure) and hoping that she can become like Princesses Celestia and Luna one day. But that told her that she needs to try harder to become one, so she asks her friends (Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie (full name Pinkamina Diane Pie), Rarity, Fluttershy, and Applejack). She tells them that she can't become one because she's too young, so they end up in a time frame and go somewhere far from Equestria. With that, she persuades Rarity not to use her unicorn horn. Rarity then asks Lord Tirek, who killed Twilight Sparkle once in The Adventures of Twilight Sparkle and he agrees Rarity to get wings. Rarity does not know where to get wings from, so she then asks everyone else. They all said yes, and at the end they finally got wings (even though Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy already had wings). The rest of the series is about Twilight Sparkle and her friends having wings and that they can fly.

Production edit

Megan McCarthy wanted to create a series specifically about flying ponies. The idea for the show first came up in 2009, when she decided to produce specifically for that. Megan wanted the characters to be the same as My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic but the characters in the series were not used with Flash. Instead they were used in Traditional/Flash animation for later seasons of the show. The series was produced by DHX Media and Hasbro Studios but unlike Friendship Is Magic, it was not produced by Studio B Productions. The title for the show was originally going to be My Little Pony: Twilight Sparkle Adventures. However, Hasbro told Megan to change the title, and she then decided to call it My Little Pony: Alicorn Ponies. As of January 2015, the series is in its fourth season of production.

Characters edit

  • Twilight Sparkle is a unicorn pony with a lavender coat and magenta mane and tail, has a cutie mark of a six pointed star with six smaller stars surrounding it and the main character of the series. She is hoping to become an Alicorn one day when her friends (Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy, Rarity Pinkie Pie and Applejack) come to help her. When she realises that her friends tell her that she's too young to become an Alicorn, Twilight persuades Rarity to go ask Lord Tirek about giving her friends wings (although Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy always had wings at the start of the series). Shortly after, he finally gives them wings. Later episodes feature Twilight Sparkle and her friends having wings so that they could have a happier life with themselves. In the season 3 premiere Twilight was shown to have defeated Nightmare Moon by using the Elements of Harmony. Megan McCarthy thought she had a different animation to Friendship Is Magic.
  • Rainbow Dash is a Pegasus pony with a sky-blue mane and tail and has a cutie mark of a lightning bolt with a cloud behind it. In the series, she and her friends go to Lord Tirek's area to get wings, although she and Fluttershy already had wings. In later episodes she flies with the rest of the ponies. In the season 3 premiere Rainbow Dash, along with Twilight Sparkle, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, Applejack, and Rarity help defeat Nightmare Moon by using the Elements of Harmony, similar to the My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic premiere but with a different setting and different time period.
  • Fluttershy is a Pegasus pony with a yellow coat and light pink mane and tail and has a cutie mark of 3 pink butterflies. In the series, she and her friends Twilight try to become an Alicorn one day so that she could fly like no other Alicorn could. They go to Lord Tirek's area and ask them to get wings, although she and Rainbow Dash already had wings. In later episodes she flies with the rest of the ponies. In the season 3 premiere she and her friends use the Elements of Harmony to defeat Nightmare Moon. In season 4, she becomes brave by doing her best for the other ponies.
  • Pinkie Pie (full name Pinkamina Diane Pie) is a light pink earth pony with a pink coat and mane and tail and has a cutie mark of 3 balloons (1 yellow, 2 blue). In the series she and her friends help Twilight by helping her become an Alicorn one day so that she could fly like no other pony could. She and her friends then go to Lord Tirek's place so that they could get wings for themselves (although Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy already had wings). They ask to have wings and he agrees. He gives them wings shortly after. In season 2 she has a reaction to music parties and other music stuff such as musical chairs. In the season 3 premiere she and the rest of her friends help defeat Nightmare Moon with the Elements of Harmony, similar to the My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic premiere but with a different setting and time period.
  • Rarity is a white unicorn with a purple mane and tail and has a cutie mark with 3 blue diamonds. In the series she and her friends help Twilight Sparkle get wings so that she could fly like no other Alicorn could and because she was too young, so they go over to Lord Tirek's place and ask them to get wings for her. Twilight Sparkle then persuades her to go to Lord Tirek and ask him to get wings for them (although Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy already had wings). She does exactly that and says "How can I help?" With that, Tirek says that they could have wings, but only if they are old enough for that. Rarity keeps asking him until he finally gives them wings. In the season 3 premiere Rarity and her friends use the Elements of Harmony to defeat Nightmare Moon. In later episodes Rarity and her friends fly with the rest of the ponies.
  • Applejack is an orange earth pony with a blonde mane and tail and has a cuite mark of 3 red apples. In the series she and her friends help Twilight Sparkle get wings so that she could fly like no other Alicorn could. She and her friends then go to Lord Tirek's area and ask him to get wings until they finally get them (although Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy already had wings). In season 1 she works full time at a training center where she is tasked by Princess Celestia to clean up everything in the barn. But by that moment she did not want to clean up everything in the barn because it was too hard for her so she gets her friends to do it. In the season 3 premiere she and her friends help defeat Nightmare Moon by using the Elements of Harmony, similar to that of the premiere of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic but with a different setting and time period.

Overall 84 episodes were produced with a fifth season to arrive on Discovery Family in Q4 2015.

Merchandise edit

My Little Pony has produced many toys for the series. The popularity of the series meant that by 2014, its playsets, books, toys, and more was attracting many people to the merchandise, with the series producing 4 specials and 2 movies, double that of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. The series has also produced a few shorts, most of which focus on Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, Rarity, and Applejack about flying like they really are. Also a crossover between this and Pound Puppies aired on The Hub at 8:30AM at Eastern Central Time on October 7, 2012, just a few days before the 2012 series Littlest Pet Shop premiered.
