In Belgium an Immigrants detention centre (“closed centre”) is a place where are detained immigrants without a legal satus (Status (law)). These centres are managed by the Belgian Immigration Office. Every year, almost 8 000 people waiting for their expulsion or rejection order are detained in these “closed centres”. Two of these centres, situated in the area of the Brussels international airport, are charged to detain foreigners lacking the documents necessary to have the right of admission or those for whom the government want to clarify the purpose of their travel. Among these people, we can find asylum seekers (Right of asylum) arrived at the airport border and detained at the Transit Centre 127. Others Belgian detention centres are mainly charged to provide removal orders for foreign nationals who are staying in the country irregularly; this include people without a residence permit, those who have an irregular one, but also other cases, listed in the law, such as asylum seekers.
