Fatal incidents edit

Date Incident(s) Fatalities
29–30 July 2011 Clashes broke out when a convoy of 100 armed men on motorcycles, some waving Islamic black standards, entered Al-Arish, the capital of the North Sinai Governorate, in an attempt to storm a police station. The fighting left six people dead, among them a policeman, a military officer and three civilians, including a 70 year-old man and a 13 year-old boy. One of the attackers was also killed. 21 more were wounded and security forces managed to arrest at least four suspects. The next day, gunmen attacked the Al-Shulaq gas pipeline with rocket-propelled grenades (RPG). However, the pipe contained no gas.[1][2] 1 policeman

18 August 2011 A number of militants carried out a series of cross-border attacks involving spree shootings and bombings on an Israeli highway near the Egyptian border. During the separate attacks, eight Israelis, including six civilians, one special unit policeman and one soldier were killed.[4] Another five Egyptian soldiers were also killed in an alleged friendly fire by Israeli forces, according to the Egyptian government. An Israeli official said they were killed in a suicide bombing.[5] On the other hand, both the IDF and Egyptian forces managed to kill 10 militants (eight and two respectively).[6] 5 soldiers

27 March 2012 A group of people identified as smugglers attempted to enter Israel through the border with Egypt but were met with IDF warning shots. Two of them, an Egyptian Bedouin and an Israeli Arab, were killed by Egyptian troops soon after fleeing back into the Sinai. What they attempted to bring into Israel is unknown.[7] 2 smugglers
15 April 2012 An ambush by Islamist militants on a police checkpoint south of the airport of Al-Arish left two policemen dead, one hit in the chest and the other in the head. Security forces failed to stop the attackers who were driving vehicles mounted with machine guns and were able to flee the site.[8] 2 policemen
2 May 2012 A policeman was killed and two others were injured in an attack carried out by masked gunmen on a security checkpoint in Rafah. State television reported that the attackers fired RPGs on the checkpoint.[9] 1 policeman
19 May 2012 Unknown gunmen attacked Nayef Abu Qebal, the government-appointed chief of the Swarka tribe in Al-Arish, when he was in a salon for a haircut. The attackers escaped and Abu Qebal was rushed to a local hospital but died of his wounds a few minutes after arriving.[10] 1 civilian
4 June 2012 Armed Bedouin tribesmen in vehicles attacked a security post, killing one policeman and wounding three others in South Sinai's Wadi Firan area. Another three policemen were injured in a shootout with Bedouin militants at a another police station in the same area. The attack's motive was not immediately clear.[11] 1 policeman
18 June 2012 Four militants carried out an early morning cross-border attack at the Israeli border. The ambush included rifle fire, antitank weapons and two explosive devices. One Israeli construction worker was killed when two of the militants crossed the border and planted a roadside bomb next to jeeps carrying workers near the fence. The gunmen later opened fire at the vehicles. This triggered soldiers from the Golani Brigade to arrive at the scene within minutes and a gunfight took place where two of the militants were killed. Israeli sources did not rule out the possibility that the attackers could have planned to either kidnap an Israeli or infiltrate a nearby Israeli community to kill as many people as possible.[12][13] 2 militants

They engaged in a firefight with IDF soldiers after one of the stolen vehicles exploded. Six militants were killed in the fighting and the other two apparently died in another gunfight following an IAF airstrike on the remaining APC.[14][15] 16 soldiers

21 September 2012 Gunmen who wore sand-colored clothing as camouflage crossed into the Negev desert at Mount Harif through a portion of the Israel–Egypt barrier that was under construction and managed to kill one Israeli soldier. Israeli forces later killed all three gunmen during a 15-minute firefight that saw the use of assault weapons and an explosive belt which detonated during the clashes. The IDF said that the attackers also stockpiled a cache of weapons including three RPGs in a nearby pit, suggesting that a larger assault could have been planned.[21][22] Two days later, Ansar Bait al-Maqdis claimed responsibility for the attack in response to the film Innocence of Muslims and to "punish the Jews for their heinous crimes".[23][24] 3 militants
