Harvey Whittle
editHarvey Whittle (born 24 December 2005) is an English filmmaker. He is most notably known for the film Piece (2024), an independent film funded by the British Film Institute, in which he served as assistant director. He subsequently worked on productions such as On A Winter Night (2024) and Just a Wish Away (2024).
Early Life and Education
editWhittle's fascination with filmmaking took root in his childhood, where he spent countless hours engrossed in behind-the-scenes documentaries and crafting fan films inspired by his favourite movies.[1]. This early exposure ignited a creative spark within him, leading him to explore the intricacies of video editing and the fundamentals of filmmaking through self-directed study.
Upon reaching college, Whittle pursued his passion with unwavering determination, enrolling in Film Studies and Media Production at College A Level. It was here that his talent truly began to shine, culminating in the creation of his seminal work, Lone Lighthouse. This student film not only earned Whittle an exceptional A* grade but also garnered acclaim as the standout production within his cohort.
Career
editWhittle's talent and dedication did not go unnoticed, and he soon found himself presented with the opportunity to contribute to a BFI-funded film Piece (2024). With each subsequent project, Whittle continued to refine his craft, seamlessly blending technical expertise with his innate storytelling ability to create immersive cinematic experiences.
Following his work Assistant Directing Piece (2024), he aided in the production of the independent feature film On A Winter Night (2024). A LGBTQ+ romance film starring Alexander Lincoln, Jack Brett Anderson and Harry Potter star David Bradley. Whittle also worked as third assistant director on Just A Wish Away (2024), a film set in 1986 following students getting their exam results just before their prom[2]
A driving force behind Whittle's work is his enduring love for stories of escapism, characterised by impossible worlds and emotionally complex characters.
