Emmi–Roth Käse USA, formerly Roth Käse USA Ltd., is a United States manufacturer of artisan cheeses based in Monroe, Wisconsin. It was founded in 1991 by Fermo Jaeckle, Felix Roth, and Ulrich Roth, descendants of the Roth family of cheesemakers.[1] In 2009, the company was bought by Emmi AG, and in 2010, the two merged to form Emmi–Roth Käse USA.[2]

History

edit

The Roth family, a Swiss family of cheesemakers, founded O. Roth & Cie near Zurich, Switzerland in 1863. Otto Roth, whose father Oswald formed the company, founded New York-based Otto Roth & Co. in 1911. It began producing cheese in 1936, and attracted some relatives from Switzerland. Otto Roth & Co. became a subsidiary of General Foods in 1983, and in 1991, Roth Käse USA was founded by three cousins: Fermo Jaeckle, Felix Roth, and Ulrich Roth.[3][4][5]

In 2006, Emmi AG began working with Roth Käse, and in 2009, Emmi purchased Roth Käse. In 2010, the two companies merged, creating Emmi–Roth Käse USA. Although the two companies are still legally distinct, they share an executive committee. The company is now owned by Andre Jaeckle, Fermo Jaeckle, Felix Roth, Ulrich Roth, with Fermo Jaeckle as CEO and Steve McKeon as president and COO.[6][7]
