The Saturn Aura Green Line is a General Motors mild hybrid. [1] When the car came out this spring it had an EPA estimated 28 city and 35 highway mpg. [2]The mid-size car has a nickle-metal battery pack, which was supplied by Cobasys. [3] In comparison with the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry hybrids, the Saturn is considerably less expensive, and the fuel efficency is about the same. The car cannot, however run on battery power alone. [2]

History

edit

The Aura came out in March of 2007, starting at $22,695. [4] However, the car was not selling well, since it cost $4,000 more than the regular Saturn Aura and only added 4 more mpg to the car. Indeed, GM sold only 35 Saturn Aura mild hybrids and 2,235 regular Saturn Auras in the month of May. Because of this, GM has discontinued the line, though they will still try to develop more hybrids and plan to have 14 gas-electric cars on the market by the end of 2012. [5]

Advantages

edit

The fuel efficiency of the Aura (28 mpg city/35 highway) is about as good as the Honda Accord & the Toyota Camry but costs much less. GM also announced in 2007 when the car came out, that buyers would be qualified a $1300 federal tax credit. The Aura was one of the lowest priced hybrids in 2007, starting at $22,695. [6] The Saturn Aura Green Line, has a full five starts in safety testing, based on government tests, making it one of the safest vehicles available. [7]
