Paolo Ruggiero (Naples, 26 September 1957) is an Italian military, Lieutenant General special duties and current Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Transformation in Norfolk, Virginia.[1].

Biography edit

Early life and education edit

Born in Naples (Italy) on September 26,1957, Ruggiero graduated in Classic Studies from the “Istituto Bianchi” High School. In 1975, he joined the Italian Army Military Academy in Modena and on September 1, 1977 he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in Field Artillery (FA). He graduated in 1979 from the Army School of Application Studies in Turin, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Military Strategic Sciences, and was promoted to first lieutenant on September 1, 1979.

Military career edit

Ruggiero has a relevant experience in command, matured in several positions during his career. His first assignment from 1979 to 1986 was at the 108th Field Artillery (FA) Battalion “Cosseria” in Casarsa, of the 132nd “Ariete” Armored Division, where he served as Battery Executive Officer, Battery Commander, Assistant S3 (Ops) and S1 (Personnel). He was promoted to captain in September 1983.

From 1986 to 1989 he was assigned to the 132nd FA Battalion “Rovereto” in Casarsa, of the 5th Army Corps, where he served as Battery Commander and S3. Promoted to lieutenant colonel on September 1993, he commanded the 1st FA Battalion “Cacciatori delle Alpi” in Bracciano, of the Field Artillery School, from 1994 to 1995.

Promoted to colonel in 1999 he commanded the 52nd FA Regiment “Torino” in Vercelli, of the “Centauro” Mechanized Brigade, from 2000 to 2001.

Promoted to Brigadier General in 2005 he commanded the “Ariete” Armoured Brigade in Pordenone from 2006 to 2008. During this time, he was deployed with his Brigade to Southern Lebanon for Operation UNIFIL II, where as Commander of Sector West he lead a multinational unit composed of troops from Italy, France, Ghana, Slovenia, South Korea and Qatar.

In 2009 he was promoted to Major General ad appointed as Artillery Commander and Inspector General in Bracciano, from 2010 to 2012.

Upon promotion to Lieutenant General in 2014, he was appointed Commander of the Army Command for Education, Training and School of Application Studies in Turin[1].

In 2015 he was deployed to Afghanistan with the "Resolute Support” Mission where he served first as Chief of Staff and then as Deputy Commander[2].

From January 2016 to February 2019, Ruggiero was appointed Deputy Commander of the NATO Allied Land Command (LANDCOM)[3] in Izmir, Turkey. On 19 July 2019, General Ruggiero was appointed Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Transformation (DSACT)[4] in Norfolk, Virginia (USA).

During his career, Ruggiero has held several positions in both the Italian Army General Staff (GS) and the Department of Defense. The most relevant are:

  • Staff Officer/Personnel Department, Army GS, 1990-1991;
  • Staff Officer for ammunition/Logistics Department, Army GS, 1992-1993;
  • Military Assistant to Chief of Army Staff, 1995-1997;
  • Plans and Operation Branch Head, Army GS, 2001-2004;
  • Chief Cabinet to Deputy Chief of Defense (CHOD), 2004-2005;
  • Vice Chief Cabinet to CHOD, 2005-2006;
  • Chief Cabinet to Vice Chief of Army Staff;
  • Chief of Staff to Army Logistics Command.

From 1997 to 2000, he was the Assistant Military Attaché at the Italian Embassy in Washington D.C. (USA).

Gen Ruggiero is married and has two daughters.

He likes reading history books, enjoys building scale military models, listening to jazz music and running.
