The 2001–02 season was Manchester City's most recent season of second tier league football, playing in the Football League First Division following their immediate relegation from the Premier League in the previous season. They were promoted at the first time of asking, winning the Division by 10 points and scoring more than 100 league goals for the first time since the 57–58 season.

The team's performance in this season set several club records, equaling their record total goals scored (108), setting a new club high points score (99) and for most seasonal wins (31) and equaling a record for home wins (19).
