Battlewagon Salvo is a pencil-and-paper naval wargame created by veteran game designer Lou Zocchi produced by Gamesience in 1974. It shares many characteristics of the more familiar Hasbro plastic peg-and-board battleship_(game), introduced in 1967[1]. Battlewagon Salvo but with added rules including vessel movement, range, and multiplayer options.

The game was released as a half fold brochure. The rules were typewritten onto aqua-colored cardstock which also functioned as the game cover. Six blank map sheets were stapled inside. Each map sheet had a basic game map and ship statistics on one side, and an advanced game map and ship statistics on the other. The game instructed the players to "cover the mapsheets with a clear plastic document protector and write on the protector with... [a] form of grease/wax pencil." Permission was not granted to make copies of the mapsheet, implying that the game supported a maximum of six players.

The game's cover advertises its major features:

  • Packs flat
  • Takes no time to set up
  • Plays in less than an hour
  • Is the ideal traveling game since everyone but the driver can play

The most well know version of the game is the plastic peg-peg and board version marketed by Mattel and later Hasbro.

The first recorded versions of a battleship-style game were played with pencil-and-paper on gridded maps[2], similar to Battlewagon Salvo. The rules for Battlewagon Salvo, however, incorporate play mechanics common to more current wargames such as degradation of attack strength and movement based on damage taken.

Battlewagon Salvo is contemporary tith very .

Association with SALVO Variant Rules

edit

The word 'Salvo' in the game title is not intended to imply an association with the Hasbro SALVO variant rules.[3], although there are similarities. The advanced SALVO variant rules allow the attacker, in one turn, to target multiple defender grid coordinates, instead of a single coordinate as mandated in the basic game. The number of grid coordinates that can be target is equal to the number of unsunk vessels in the attacker's fleet.

In Battlewagon Salvo, optional rule Q, "Multiple Ship Shooting" makes an exception so that "two ships are permitted to fire on the same turn." This is similarto the SALVO rules, except that the SALVO rules allow for a maximum of five ships to fire at one time.
