The word '' Matamuhuri'' (মাতামুহুরী) is a local Bengali word which depicts something with a motherly feature. ''Mata'' means ''মা'' according to local Bengali Language and in English - ''Mother''.

The exact origin of the river Matamuhuri is disputed. According to some sources, the origin of the river Matamuhuri is in Mount Lamar The name of this river in Magh language is Mamuri. There is also a history of naming the river Matamuhuri. There is a rumor that this river did not originate from any single specific waterfall (multi source waterfall ). The river is formed by dripping water from the mouths of so many mother-like mountains. That is why its name is Matamuhuri . The word ''muhuri'' means water jhajar with innumerable holes, meaning shower in English. The river flows into the Bay of Bengal along the western side of Chakaria upazila in Cox's Bazar district. Its length is about 26 km The delta formed at the mouth of the Matamuhuri in the Bay of Bengal extends from Bholakhal to Khutakhali.

Township edit

Chakaria, Lama and Ali kadam upazila towns are formed on the banks of river Matamuhuri. Besides, this river has also passed through some parts of Pekua upazila. Just as the Nile is a gift from Egypt, so are the three upazilas of Lama, Alikadam and Chakaria. Matamuhuri has been the main means of communication and trade in these upazilas for a long time. Besides, the main ganjas of the upazilas are situated on the banks of Matamuhuri. The river is the beginning of human settlement and migration in hilly areas like Lama and Ali-kadam.
