Alverthorpe edit

  • “The Almshouses at Brooksbank, in Alverthorpe, consist of five tenements, with a garden; and were founded in 1580, for five poor widows of this parish, by Leondard Bate, who endowed them with 16A. 2R. 19P. of land, at Gomersall, Alverthorpe, Thornes, and Stanley, now let for £46 a year. After paying for repairs, &c., the surplus is divided equally amongst the almswomen.”[1]
  • “Mr. Whitaker supposes the camp at Kirklees to be an intermediate station, occupied by a centurion's guard. He thinks it probable that there were generally one or more of these, between the principal stations, for the purpose of keeping up the communication between them, and to serve as resting places on a long march. Such he believes to be the one at Castleshaw in Saddleworth, which would be between Mancunium and Cambodunum; and such also might be the one at Leeds, which would be midway between Cumbodunum and Calcaria. It is possible that there may bave been a camp of this kind near Lingwell; for instance, at or near Alverthorpe, which lies upon the route above described, and where coins and other remains have not infrequently been found.”[2]
