Council for a Livable World

edit

The Council was founded in 1962 by nuclear physicist Leo Szilard and other scientists who worked in the early days of atomic weapons.

Current Executive Director of Council for a Livable World and its sister organization, Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation is John D. Isaacs.

The overarching goal of The Council is to warn the public and Congress of the threat of nuclear war and direct the approach to rational arms control and nuclear disarmament.

The mission of The Council is as follows:

The Council provides Senators and Members of Congress with sophisticated technical and scientific information that helps them make intelligent decisions about weapons of mass destruction – nuclear, chemical and biological weapons, nuclear non-proliferation and other national security issues.1

The Council aided in getting passed the Chemical Weapons Convention and the 1992 nuclear testing moratorium, the Intermediate- Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, the Conventional Forces in Europe Treaty, the START Treaties; banning biological weapons; terminating chemical weapons production and the Minuteman missile; negotiation of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty; limiting MX and B-2 deployment; blocking deployment by the Clinton Administration of a National Missile Defense and eliminating funding for the nuclear bunker buster, a new generation of nuclear weapons. 2

Council for a Livable World continues to work towards eventual elimination of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons.

The Council implements numerous tools to help members of Congress make informed decisions regarding legislation such as:

  • Legislation
  • Lobbying
  • Seminars
  • Public Information
  • Joint Actions
