Crushing It was a social media love story run during Social Media Week run in Toronto during Social Media Week.[1]

Run entirely on social media networks, the experimental story telling structure following eleven distinct characters over one week of their lives.

Crushing It! was a "romantic comedy for the twitter age"[2]. It was week long ‘live’ semi-improvised story told by the characters themselves using social networking. With intentional audience interaction points. Key elements of the story were determined by audience voting and messaging during the week of the live "play" broadcast.

Using [2] Twitter Accounts, Youtube, Tumblr, Wordpress for character interactions.

To date, Crushing It! is the only twitter soap opera written, and the story was a creative and technical success that garnered many followers, and interactive participants, quickly.

The Story

edit

Barbara and Laurence are supposed to be getting married on Friday. Between now and then, Laurence will let Brad talk him into “one last fling," as Brad gets rid of his own ex.

Barbara will spill coffee on Dave… who promptly falls in love with her. Dave’s girlfriend, Carmella, will probably have something to say about that. Lily, the maid of honour, is 9 months pregnant and Peter, the father is just finding out about it.

Geeky Neal is crushing it[3] with the mysterious (and equally geeky) Gam3rgurl all the while. On the other side of the globe, Dave’s mother June is living out loud on twitter – much to Dave’s embarrassment.

Characters

edit

Barbara [4]
A bride with cold feet, Barbara's just trying to get everything in working order when she meets Dave. After spilling coffee over not only his phone, but his pants too. Barbara's wedding is about to happen, and every single thing that could go wrong - from food poisoning from the caterer to an ill-fitting dress - does.

Lily [5]
Soon to be Mom and sooner to be bridesmaid,"Lilly Green"., is Barbara's maid-of-honour. Not too great with math. Lily's nine months pregnant and about to pop, though she thought she had a while yet. Lily gives birth to little "Brownie" just in time to make the wedding.

Peter [6]
Lily's baby-daddy, Peter's discovered via twitter that he's about to have a kid. Lily didn't overly want to involve him, but he madly drives up from New York once he realizes that Lily's about to have her kid.

Laurence [7]
Barbara's husband-to-be, Laurence is suffering from his own case of cold feet, brought on by his best friend Brad. Laurence's cold feet involve a bit of pre-wedding dating and possibly one fling. Laurence is rather unimpressed by Dave through all of this. Laurence also has a doppelganger account [8] to hook up.

Brad [9]
A happily divorced man, Brad doesn't want Laurence to fall into the same trap he did. Brad's a bit of a scoundrel, easily falling into old patterns with restarting the site Laurence and he popularized on getting women and finding action[10].

[5]

Dave [11]
A tech writer who thinks everything's going great, Dave loses both his job and the car on day one. His one saving grace for the week is Barbara, who he rapidly falls in love with. The problem is, she doesn't tell him she's getting married. As the week progresses, Dave manages to deliver a baby, destroy his own relationship, but managed to get Garyvee[12] on his side so he could go after Barb.

Carmella [13]
Dave's on-again-off-again girlfriend, Carmella is a woman on a mission. Desperately searching for the man who will finally marry her, Carm can come across as a bit off the wall. A slight alcoholic, Carm's volatile, emotional and passionate.

Neal [14]
Neal's a firm believer in Gary_Vaynerchuk's book Crush It.[7] He uses Gary's techniques to literally crush on Gam3rgul - to his success at the end of the week. Neal and Gam3rgurl help get Dave through the craziness of his life. Neal even offers him a place to crash after Carmella kicks Dave out.

Gam3rGurl [15]
A fellow fan of Gary_Vaynerchuk, Gam3rgurl first meets with David and Neal through the Internet and set up social media networks for crushing it. Gam3rgurl is also a bit of a recluse. She eventually agrees to Neal's date after he convinces her it won't ruin their friendship. Gam3rgurl and Neal go on the offensive to help friend Dave when it looks like he's going to give up on the girl of his dreams.

June [16]
Dave's mother, and just starting up with social networking, June has a tendency to overshare information about Dave's past on the internet for the world to see. Not entirely sure what to do with social media, June's also not entirely aware that everyone can see everything she posts. June's reconnection with Julien goes quite well.

Julien [17]
An old flame of June's who happened to be in town for a bit of time and was free for a dinner date. Managed to reconnect quite fully by the end of the night. Julien is quite happy enough to reconnect via twitter.
