The expression is problematic when it designates a specific group of artists. It doesn't refer to a specific school and its original usage was derogatory, an ironic reference to the ethnicity of many Parisian artists, refugees from Russia and Eastern Europe.

In her Dictionnaire des peintres de l’École de Paris (Dictionary of the Painters of the School of Paris (1993)), Lydia Harambourg [fr] defends the expression for the continuity that it allows to be established between different phases of modern art among artists who lived in Paris. She doesn't present a particular school or wave, but rather twenty years of painting in Paris. The term was retained because no other seems to convey the artistic dominance of Paris in the post-war period.

In this usage, School of Paris designates artists who contributed to making Paris the home of artistic creation until 1960.

In general three periods can be distinguished in the artistic landscape of the 20th century Paris. The first goes from 1900 to the 1920s, the second covers l’entre-deux-guerres and World War II and last, the post-war period.
