Wayne Manor (or more simply, Wayne) is an all-male, non-Greek "Selective Living Group" (SLG) at Duke University, situated in Durham, North Carolina.[1] Established in 1981, the organization boasts a vibrant, dynamic community that has far outgrown the expectations of its founding members. Originally residing in Wannamaker Dormitory on West Campus,[2] Wayne Manor is home to a diverse group of students from various backgrounds and fields of study. The organization places a strong emphasis on personal growth, engagement in community service projects, fostering faculty interaction, and organizing social events such as mixers, formal dances, and campus-wide parties.[2]

Wayne Manor offers a compelling alternative to fraternity life at Duke University, prioritizing both social engagement and community service without requiring mandatory pledging.[2] Emphasizing diversity and inclusivity, Wayne Manor selects its members irrespective of race, religion, socioeconomic status, or sexual orientation.[2]

Community Engagement

edit

Wayne Manor places philanthropic and community-based initiatives at the core of its mission. Since 1992, Wayne has fostered a unique partnership with Hillandale Elementary School.[2] Members have contributed to the school in various ways, including providing Spanish instruction, organizing and overseeing the chess and science clubs, tutoring mathematics, maintaining the nature trail, leading recess activities, and facilitating art clubs.[3] This extensive involvement spans multiple aspects of the school, fostering a strong bond between Wayne Manor and the local community.[4] The organization considers this relationship an essential component of membership.[2]

Members of Wayne Manor have historically engaged with Hillandale students on a weekly basis, which has garnered numerous community service recognitions for the organization.[4][2]

Established in 1981, Wayne Manor originated as a group called the "Bunch of Guys" (BOG), an independent living group disbanded by the Judiciary Committee in 1992 due to alcohol violations.[5][2][6] Unitl the end of its existence, the BOG resided in Building HH, Few Quad, and its members were referred to as BOGgers. Known for their infamous reputation on Duke's campus, BOGgers led various chants for the Duke men's basketball team throughout the 1980s and 1990s.[7] The BOG is now commemorated as a space on the vintage Duke-themed Monopoly game, Dukeopoly.[5]

After its dissolution, former BOG members established Wayne Manor in reference to the home of Bruce Wayne, Batman’s alter ego.[8] Wayne Manor functioned as a Selective Living Group (SLG) at Duke from 1992 to 2021.[1][2] Members of Wayne resided in Wannamaker Dormitory on West Campus during this time.[2] Some Duke students expressed discontent with the selective-living model, as organizations like Wayne Manor dominated their respective dorms' living spaces.[8]

By 2021, all Greek fraternities had disaffiliated from Duke’s Interfraternity Council (IFC) in favor of the Durham Interfraternity Council.[9] Soon after, Duke University announced the discontinuation of on-campus housing for SLGs after the 2023-2024 academic year.[1] While many SLGs transitioned to a Living-Learning Community model to maintain on-campus housing, Wayne Manor chose to preserve its SLG status and relocated to off-campus accommodations.[10]

Wayne Manor and the Durham IFC organizations maintain their commitment to ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for all social activities. Even after disaffiliating with Duke, both organizations continue to participate in mandatory pre-rush training conducted by student-led groups Duke Sexual Harassment and Assault Prevention and Education (SHAPE) and Duke Sexual Assault Prevention Team (SAPT).[11] Wayne Manor is the only SLG to participate in these trainings.[11]
