The Fittipaldi F8 is a Formula One car designed by Harvey Postlethwaite and Adrian Newey which was used in the latter part of the 1980, all of the 1981 and most of the 1982 Formula One seasons, by Fittipaldi Automotive. It participated in 30 races with 50 entries overall. It scored three championship points over the three seasons, with a best finish of fifth place at the 1980 Italian Grand Prix, driven by Keke Rosberg.

Competition history edit

1980: Fittipaldi F8 edit

The F8 made its debut at the 1980 British Grand Prix, but only one car was ready which was driven by team co-owner, Brazilian Emerson Fittipaldi who finished 12th. His teammate, Finland's Keke Rosberg, failed to qualify the older Fittipaldi F7 (a 1979 Wolf WR7).[4] Two F8 cars were ready for Germany but both drivers retired. The Finnish driver had wheel bearing issues and the Brazilian's brakes failed.[5] At the Austrian Grand Prix Fittipaldi finished 11th and Rosberg 16th.[6] The Finnish driver failed to qualify for Holland and the Brazilian's brakes failed.[7] At the Italian Grand Prix Fittipaldi retired after an accident and Rosberg finished fifth.[8] A first lap crash in Canada involved both the Brazilian and Finnish drivers and also the Tyrrell's of Jean-Pierre Jarier and Derek Daly, Jochen Mass's Arrows, Mario Andretti's Lotus and Gilles Villeneuve's Ferrari. The Brazilian used his spare car but retired later in the race because of a gearbox problem and the Finnish driver had his car repaired and finished 9th.[9] At the United States Grand Prix East Fittipaldi retired from his final grand prix with broken suspension and Rosberg finished tenth [10]

1981: Fittipaldi F8C edit

The car was updated for 1981 and the F8 became the Fittipaldi F8C and the drivers were Rosberg and Brazilian Chico Serra. Emerson Fittipaldi decided to retire from racing at the end of 1980. He has since said that his last two years in Formula One were very unhappy: "I was too involved in the problems of trying to make the team work, and I neglected my marriage and my personal life", although at the time he cited colleagues' deaths as his reason.[citation needed] He was only 33, but had been racing in Formula One for a decade. He had failed to finish seven of the last ten races that year and had several times been outpaced by Rosberg. He moved into the management of the team. The first race of the season was the 1981 United States Grand Prix West where Rosberg's engine failed and Serra finished 7th.[11] In Brazil Fittipaldi retired from his home race because of a collision and the Finn finished ninth.[12] Both drivers retired at the Argentine Grand Prix, Serra with a broken gearbox and Rosberg with a fuel system problem.[13] The Brazilian failed to qualify for San Marino and the Finnish driver retired with engine failure.[14] Both drivers retired at the Belgian Grand Prix, Serra with an engine failure and Rosberg with a broken gearbox.[15] Both drivers failed to qualify for Monaco.[16] At the Spanish Grand Prix The Brazilian finished 11th and the Finnish driver 12th.[17] Serra was a non-starter for France and Rosberg retired with broken suspension.[18] The Brazilian failed to qualify for the British Grand Prix and the Finnish driver again retired with a suspension breakage.[19] Both drivers failed to qualify for Germany then the team skipped Austria because they did not have enough engines.[20] Rosberg and Serra both failed to qualify for the Dutch, Italian and Canadian Grands Prix.[21] [22][23] At the Caesars Palace Grand Prix held in the parking lot of the Caesars Palace hotel. The Brazilian failed to qualify and the Finnish driver finished 10th.[24]

1982: Fittipaldi F8D edit

The car was again updated in 1982 and the F8C became designated as the Fittipaldi F8D with Serra the sole driver after Rosberg left for Williams. The first race of the season was the 1982 South African Grand Prix and Serra finished 17th.[25] Serra retired from his home race in Brazil because of broken suspension.[26] Serra failed to qualify for the United States Grand Prix West then skipped San Marino.[27] The Brazilian finished sixth at the Belgian Grand Prix then failed to pre-qualify for Monaco.[28][29] At the Detroit Grand Prix, Serra finished 11th then failed to qualify for Canada.[30] [31] At the Dutch Grand Prix fuel system problems forced the Brazilian to retire[32] and Serra retired in Britain because of a collision.[33] The F8D was replaced by the Fittipaldi F9 from the French Grand Prix onwards.
