"Dear Lord: please don't let me fuck up." - Scott Glenn as Alan Shepard in The Right Stuff.

Reworking all this Star Trek starship stuff is going to be a real bitch.

The Star Trek media franchise includes numerous starships used by Starfleet, a branch of the United Federation of Planets.

Akira class edit

Akira class

First appearanceStar Trek: First Contact
Last appearance"Endgame"

The Akira-class starship first appears in Star Trek: First Contact and subsequently in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager.[1]

Alex Jaeger of Industrial Light & Magic designed the Akira class, which is named for the anime film Akira.[2] Jaeger commented on the design in an interview with Star Trek Magazine: "This was my gunship/battlecruiser/aircraft carrier. It has 15 torpedo launchers and two shuttlebays - one in front, with three doors, and one in the back. I really got into it with this one, with the whole idea that the front bay would be the launching bay, and then to return they'd come into the back, because they'd be protected by the rest of the ship."[citation needed]

The USS Hathaway (NCC-2593), a Constellation class
First appearance"The Battle"
Last appearance"Redemption Pt. 2

Designed by Andrew Probert and Rick Sternbach.[3] Sternbach created a smaller model displayed in Picard's readyroom on which Greg Jein based a four-foot filming model.[3][4] Sternbach's model was a kitbash involving Ertl's movie-era USS Enterprise models, the VF-1 Valkyrie from The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, and other kits.[4]

The USS Stargazer appears in "The Battle", the first Constellation-class ship to appear in the series. The ship was originally intended to be a Constitution-class ship so the visual effects staff could use the existing filming model.[1] The decision to create a new ship occurred after "The Battle" was filmed; the "Constellation" name was chosen in large part because it could be dubbed over "Constitution" while still matching Geordi La Forge's lip movements for the close-up in which he identifies the Stargazer's class.[1]

Ships edit

USS Constellation (NCC-1974)
Mentioned in "The Abandoned".[1]
USS Gettysburg (NCC-3890)
Mentioned in "Too Short a Season" as Admiral Mark Jameson's last starship command.[1]

The USS Yangtzee Kiang, a Danube-class vessel
First appearance"Emissary"and/or "Timescape"
Last appearance"What You Leave Behind"

The Danube class "runabout" was designed by Rick Sternbach and Jim Martin for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine in 1992.[1] They are multirole vessels used for short-range movement of personnel and supplies.

The Danube class runabout features a modular design; the assembly of the spine, pylons, nacelles, and command module is permanent while the four aft modules are interchangeable to suit mission parameters.[6] Modules include various research laboratories, sensor stations, power generators, living quarters, storage and hazardous storage, and other supplemental modules.

Ships edit

USS Danube (NCC-72003, ex-NX-72003)
Constructed in 2368 at Utopia Planitia shipyards and was the pathfinder of its class.
USS Gander (Registry unknown)
Destroyed by the Jem'Hadar over Goralis in 2375. The Gander was originally to be named Ganges, however due to an earlier runabout possessing that name, it was changed to Gander and was dubbed over in lines featuring the name.
USS Ganges (NCC-72454)
Assigned to Deep Space Nine. The Ganges was destroyed in 2370 by a T'Lani vessel.
USS Mekong (NCC-72617)
Destroyed in 2371 during the joint Cardassian/Romulan assault on the Founder's Homeworld in the Omarion Nebula. It had been assigned to DS9 to replace the Ganges.
USS Orinoco (NCC-72905)
Destroyed in 2372 by a Cardassian separatist group named "The True Way." It had been assigned to DS9 to replace the Yangtzee Kiang.
USS Rio Grande (NCC-72452)
Assigned to Deep Space Nine circa stardate 46379.1 in 2369. It is the only runabout known to have survived all seven years of Captain Benjamin Sisko's command aboard Deep Space Nine. It is also the runabout that was used when the Bajoran Wormhole was discovered by Captain Sisko and the late Lieutenant Commander Jadzia Dax.
USS Rubicon (NCC-72936)
Used to investigate a rare subspace compression anomaly circa stardate 51474.2. The Rubicon was presumably the runabout taken by Worf and Garak when they were captured by the Dominion. The Rubicon is presumed still in active service at DS9 as of 2376.
USS Shenandoah (NCC-73024)
Assigned to Deep Space Nine. On stardate 51825, Ensign Nog and Jake Sisko used the Shenandoah to deliver an official diplomatic message to Grand Nagus Zek. The Shenandoah was destroyed by Jem'Hadar attack ships but Nog and Jake Sisko were saved by the Defiant class USS Valiant in 2374.
USS Volga (NCC-73196)
Used in a 2372 botanical survey of the planet Torad V.
USS Yangtzee Kiang (NCC-72453)
Destroyed in a crash on a penal colony moon in the Gamma Quadrant, thus gaining the dubious honour of being the first DS9 runabout destroyed on the series.
USS Yukon (NCC-74602)
Destroyed by the USS Defiant when a Dominion agent stole the runabout to destroy the Bajor system's sun.

The Deep Space Nine relaunch novels introduced new runabouts, including the Brahmaputra and the Yolja. The Yolja was named by Kira Nerys following Bajor's admittance to the United Federation of Planets and is an exception to the naming system: the Yolja is a river on Bajor, rather than Earth.

Defiant class edit

Defiant Class
First appearance"The Search"
Last appearance"Endgame"

The Defiant class was designed by James Martin under the direction of Herman Zimmerman and Gary Hutzel, and introduced in the form of the USS Defiant in the third season of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Ships in the class also appear in Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: First Contact.

The Defiant class vessel is one of Starfleet's most advanced ship designs, conceived in response to the Borg threat. In the Episode "The Search", Benjamin Sisko -- who helped design the ship -- says the Defiant is officially designated an "escort" ship. A diminished Borg threat and engineering problems – particularly in regard to the small ship's overpowered engines – led Starfleet to mothball the project.

Ships edit

USS Defiant (NX-74205)
The class pathfinder built at the Antares Fleet Yards. The Defiant is assigned to space station Deep Space Nine in 2371 to help protect the Alpha Quadrant from the growing threat from the Dominion. The Romulans equipped the ship with a cloaking device for use on intelligence-gathering missions in the Gamma Quadrant. The ship is destroyed in 2375 after attempting to stop the Dominion and Breen from retaking the Chin'toka system during the Dominion War.
USS São Paulo (NCC-75633)
Assigned to Deep Space Nine after the Defiant's destruction and rechristened as the USS Defiant. The studio did not wish to spend the time or money to redo stock effects shots of the Defiant used to depict this new vessel. As such, exterior shots of the ship include the registry number "NX-74205".
USS Valiant (NCC-74210)
Crewed by Starfleet cadets in "Valiant", and destroyed by the Dominion.

Excelsior class edit

Excelsior class

The Excelsior-class starship Excelsior
First appearanceStar Trek III
Last appearance"Endgame"

The USS Excelsior was designed by Industrial Light & Magic's Bill George for Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, in which it is a testbed for transwarp drive. The ship appears in subsequent films, and the model was re-used for other ships in episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, as well as the finale of Star Trek: Voyager. Star Trek Generations also uses the same model, with various additions designed by John Eaves, for the USS Enterprise-B. Some alterations to the model were made to allow special effects artists to show damage to that part of the ship without permantently altering the original).

Ships edit

USS Al-Batani (NCC-42995)
Although it never appeared on screen, the Al-Batani was mentioned in dialogue throughout Star Trek: Voyager as the first ship aboard which Kathryn Janeway served, as science officer under Tom Paris' father Captain Owen Paris.[7][8] The Al-Batani was once trapped by gravimetric forces inside a proto-nebula for three days before escaping.[9] Never defined on screen, the class and registry number come from the Star Trek Encyclopedia.[1]Okuda, Michael & Denise (1994,1997,1999). First appearanceStar Trek II
Last appearance"What You Leave Behind"

The Miranda class first appears in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan then in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and subsequently in episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

The Miranda-class USS Reliant was designed by Joe Jennings and Mike Minor and built by Industrial Light & Magic for Star Trek II. The Reliant is the first Federation starship seen in Star Trek that is not a Constitution-class vessel. The Reliant was designed to have the warp nacelles above the saucer section -- however, during pre-production a Reliant storyboard was displayed upside down, and the production team felt the nacelles would look much better underneath.[13] Additionally, they felt this would help viewers better distinguish between the Enterprise and Reliant.[13]

The TNG episode "Cause and Effect" depicts a Soyuz-class vessel, the USS Bozeman. The Star Trek Encyclopedia calls this a "variant" on the Miranda class, and notes that a modified version of the Miranda studio model was used.[1]

Ships edit

USS Brattain (NCC-21166)
The starship Brattain was launched from the 40 Eridani-A Starfleet Construction Yards in 2347. General characteristics
ClassPrometheus

The USS Prometheus is a fictional starship in the science fiction franchise Star Trek.

In the episode "Message in a Bottle", the USS Prometheus was fully commissioned and began a series of shakedown cruises before it was stolen by Romulans. USS Voyager's Emergency Medical Hologram and the experimental Mark II Emergency Medical Hologram aboard the Prometheus help Starfleet successfully retake the ship. It was on this mission that Starfleet learns of Voyager's presence in the Delta Quadrant. When a Borg transwarp conduit opens near Earth, a Prometheus-class ship is part of the fleet that is sent to intercept the perceived threat and escorts Voyager home.[27] In the Star Trek: Enterprise episode "Azati Prime", when Jonathan Archer is transported to the future by Daniels, several shots of the battle through a window are shown. One or more Prometheus class ships fly by the Enterprise-J just long enough to be visible.

Development on the Prometheus-class starship project began in the early 2360s at the Beta Antares shipyards. With the Dominion threat becoming more serious, development was stepped up and construction began in the early 2370s. The Prometheus design borrows its shape from the Intrepid-class starships, except it features four standard warp nacelles similar in design to the nacelles used in the Sovereign-class starship. In 2374, the U.S.S. Prometheus NX-59650 was launched and began top secret field tests.

The USS Prometheus is a testbed of technologies being researched by Starfleet. In standard configuration, the ship is composed of an arrowhead-shaped primary hull attached directly to a secondary hull supporting four warp nacelles on short pylons in an 'X' configuration. In battle, this ship can go into "multi-vector assault mode" in which the vessel may divide into three ships — the saucer, the upper engineering hull, and the lower engineering hull — to allow for multiple independently moving weapons platforms. The saucer has two small warp nacelles that are stored in recesses while joined and extend once the saucer has separated. The three components can later reconnect. A line of dialogue from the Mark II Emergency Medical Hologram reveals that the Prometheus was designed to go faster than any other vessel in Starfleet.

It is outfitted with regenerative deflector shields and ablative armor (an outer hull layer that vaporizes under weapons fire, thereby dissipating energy and protecting the ship's interior).[28]

Another innovation is the installation of holoemitters throughout the ship, which allows its holographic doctor, the EMH Mark II (also a prototype), to operate in all crew areas. This aspect of the design was crucial in recovering the Prometheus from Romulan hands in 2374.[28]

Saber class edit

Saber class
First appearanceStar Trek: The Next Generation
Last appearanceStar Trek: Deep Space Nine

In the fictional universe of Star Trek, the Saber class starship is a type of starship produced and used by Starfleet in the 24th century. The Saber class was designed by Alex Jaeger at Industrial Light and Magic and rendered as a computer-generated visual effect. This ship first appears in Star Trek: First Contact and later appears in at least ten episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.[citation needed]

The basic form of the ship is that of an elliptic saucer-shaped hull, with the width of it being fore to aft and its length the ship's width abeam. From the tips of the ellipse, two nacelles, each housing a warp engine run aft; between them, from the center of the primary hull, an extension of the hull, slightly longer than the nacelles, runs aftward, housing the engineering section, and in an underslung construction on its ventral side, the navigational deflector. The ship's phaser strips and lifeboats occupy the dorsal saucer. Two impulse engines are located between the engineering hull and the engines, one on each side of the ship. The Bussard ramscoops are found on the front edge of the saucer, one near each end of it. The Saber class appears in Star Trek Armada II. The "Saber" class also appears in Star Trek: Starfleet Command III as the basic "frigate" ship that Federation players start with. It also serves this function in Star Trek Deep Space Nine: Dominion Wars.

Ships edit

USS Yeager (NCC-61947)
Named for Chuck Yeager, the starship Yeager fought in the Battle of Sector 001 in 2373.
USS da Vinci (NCC-81623)

The Sovereign class first appears in Star Trek: First Contact in the form of the USS Enterprise-E, designed by Herman Zimmerman and illustrator John Eaves.

Ships edit

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-E)
Commanded by Captain Jean-Luc Picard, the Enterprise was launched in 2372 from the San Francisco Yards. The next year, the Enterprise fights in the Battle of Sector 001 before being transported back to 2063 where the Borg partially assimilate it during their attempt to prevent first contact between humans and Vulcans.[29] In 2375, the Enterprise crew prevents the forced relocation of the Ba'ku people from their planet in the Briar Patch.[30] In 2379, the ship travels to Romulus to meet with Praetor Shinzon. The Enterprise is severely damaged while fighting Shinzon's Scimitar, and shortly thereafter undergoes major repairs in orbit over Earth.[31] First Contact describes the Enterprise as Starfleet's "most advanced" ship,[29] and the Enterprise is the Federation flagship in Star Trek Nemesis.[31]
USS Sovereign (NX-73811) later (NCC-73811)
Appears in Star Trek Bridge Commander and plays a vital role in the game. It is also the pathfinder for this class.

Steamrunner class edit

Steamrunner class
First appearanceStar Trek: First Contact

In the Star Trek fictional universe, the Steamrunner class is a rarely seen class of Starfleet starship. In real life, the Steamrunner class was designed by Alex Jaeger at Industrial Light and Magic and rendered as a computer-generated visual effect. It was originally called the Streamrunner, named for the song "Streamrunner" by Fold Zandura but for some reason the first 'r' had been dropped.

The Steamrunner class served during the Dominion War and Borg incursions; at least one Steamrunner was lost in the explosion of the Borg cube during the Battle of Sector 001. The only clearly identified Steamrunner-class starship is the USS Appalachia (NCC-52136), which is seen fighting the Borg cube towards the start of the movie Star Trek: First Contact.

This ship design has an angular saucer-shaped hull. Like the Saber class, the Steamrunner has two warp nacelles embedded in the saucer.

Instead of an engineering hull, an underslung secondary hull with a blue navigational deflector at the forefront is attached to the nacelles by a pylon running downward and inward at the aft end of each. The main bridge and the dorsal phaser array are embedded into the saucer. The primary hull's ventral side is dominated by the ship's ventral phaser array and lifeboats. Two impulse engines are located between the nacelles with one on each side of the ship.

The Steamrunner class is featured in the non-canon Star Trek: Armada series of computer games as the Federation's long range artillery ship. It also appears in the game Star Trek: Legacy as a Destroyer.
