Thai Auspicious Colors

edit

Color has always been an important aspect of Thai culture. For a long time, it has been used to reflect a variety of aspects of their lives, including the color that represents each day of the week and their lucky color, whether it is the lucky color for their birthday or just the color of the day. Thais' views about color are also linked to every area of their lives, since for instance, royalty has an effect on beliefs, as most Thais apply the royals' birthday colors to celebrate their birthdays and to represent the specific royalty.[1]

The most popular color-related beliefs in Thai society are the auspicious color of their birthday and the fortunate day of a week. Auspicious colors may represent various elements of their lives, including power, money, luck/support, relationships, health, and the unfortunate. As a result, the majority of Thai people these days choose to match their attire to the auspicious color of the day rather than the day's official color in order to be discreet about their belief, as they do not want to reveal that they believe in it but still believe in it.

Thais' belief in auspicious colors is prominently reflected as they are a country of diverse cultures, with most beliefs affected by astrological rules influenced by Hindu culture and other mythologies such as Thaksapakon (The belief of eight planets).[2][3][4] The meanings of different colors are very impactful and have a strong meaning in most adults to elderly since the past because many Thai people have been cultivated in the topic of auspicious colors and various beliefs since ancient times.[5][6] Choosing colors to dress aims to predict events that will happen that day and aims to enhance fate which maintains that dressing in auspicious colors is an important thing that should not be neglected.[7]

History

edit

In Thai society, the concept of auspicious colors is linked to the long-standing traditional astrological beliefs of the people. There are several beliefs from various origins since Thailand is a country with a diverse culture that includes Hinduism, Buddhism, Chinese beliefs, Laos religion, Cambodia beliefs, and more. The names of fortune-teller books, A celebration of three worlds, and art of war are examples of publications that discuss people's fortunate colors. Nonetheless, the most popular one, which Thai people still use today, is known as "Thaksapakorn".

The belief of Thaksapakorn may pervade all parts of Thai life, beginning with how they choose their real name, how they consider the color of a car that would match their luck before purchasing it, and even the location of the house that they will buy.[4] The belief can be separated into three parts: Thaksa, Direction, and Land.[8] Thaksa is the idea of the god of the day, in which everyone will have their god of birth from the day they were born, from Monday to Sunday, with the addition of the Wednesday nighttime with the gods called Rahu and Ketu for those who do not know which day they were born on. Each god has their own narrative, and those elements are combined to produce the fortunate color of the day. For direction, each Thaksa will have their own direction, which will represent the location of each deity. For land, there will be a certain aspect where land conduction occurs, such as Monday Thaksa, which is located in the Burapa direction and is the land of age.

As a result, throughout time, the references or sources of auspicious colors for Thai people may alter or mix since they have numerous beliefs about fortunate colors, which may be combined.

In total, there are eight Thaksas, also known as the eight gods of each day. The way of how to match lucky colors depending on the day of birth follow the same notion of how to name using this belief, but instead of letters, colors are used. Boriwan (family, friends, followers), Ayu (health, wellness), Detch (power, success), Sri (virtuousness, propitiousness, fortune), Mula (wealth, property, security), Utsaha (industriousness, good education, good business), Montri (supporters, helpers, protectors), and Kalakini (obstacle, bad luck) are the aspects associated with each direction.[11]
