Good news - for me anyway edit

Hello DB. My copy of Marketa Lazarová arrived today. When I went to order it I was pleasantly surprised to see that The Navigator: A Medieval Odyssey had finally made its way to DVD so I picked it up as well. I have a BBQ to go to tonight so it looks like the weekend will be spent in the Middle Ages :-) BTW I was glad to see A Woman of Paris added to the list. From everything I've read and the documentaries I've seen I sense that Edna had a special place in Chaplin's life. After their romantic relationship ended they stayed friends which was not the case with the other women he became involved with - well until Oona anyway. Enjoy your weekend. MarnetteD|Talk 20:35, 31 July 2015 (UTC)

Evening MD. Excellent. I do hope I don't disappoint you with it! There was just something about it for me which ticked all the boxes. It's something I think you'd have to watch several times to fully appreciate. Yes, also saw one of F. W. Murnau's earlier films. Both a treat. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:39, 31 July 2015 (UTC)

All I can say is yowza DB. Not only did it tick all the boxes - It ticked boxes that I didn't know that I had or had forgotten in their entirety. As I just finished watching it I know that it is going to take me awhile to put everything into words. OTOH there are a couple things I can say. First, visually it is stunning a) B&W is so striking and the film would have been less in color b) two days ago I rewatched AK's The Idiot so (even though it is in the 90's here I have a good winter chill going :-) Second, and this may only apply to me, there is something about a watching a film where I don't know any of the actors other performances - it is as though they only inhabit this set of characters. Of course this is a bit shortsighted but it also adds to my initial reaction to this film. I look forward to future viewings of the film because, as you say, my appreciation will grow. That is such a hallmark of our favorite films and directors. MarnetteD|Talk 04:19, 2 August 2015 (UTC)
Glad you enjoyed it. The strength for me aside from the cinematography was the music. Soul stirring. I think it was more the combination of the two rather than particularly good acting or screenplay or whatever. At times it gave me chills and stunned me. But they did seem realistic characters, as I say it was like being transported back in a time machine to medieval times, a special viewing experience.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:32, 2 August 2015 (UTC)

To Dr. Blofeld, for taking Varanasi to GA status! Keep rocking and continue the good work! — Ssven2 Speak 2 me 06:23, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

@Ssven2: Cheers Ssven! A core article no doubt. Funny you should mention "keep rocking", I was playing my guitar pretty loudly (yet only 1.5 of 10 on my 100 watt Marshall ;-)) with my looper pedal last night and out of the corner of my eye I noticed some neighbours watching me through the window! Obviously I was a spectacle worth watching/listening to haha! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:32, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

  The Special Barnstar
For being able to churn out so many Good Articles like a bad case of diarrhoea - I really do wish I had your skill and patience. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 09:38, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

Haha, thanks Ritchie333!! Well, I tend to go through productive phases, other times I can't be arsed, but at the moment I see the need to promote articles to GA!♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:33, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

I just choked on my coffee, but thanks for the laugh Ritchie333. I am amazed at how many of these you are able to do Dr. B and only wish that someone would get interested in doing the same for WomeninRed articles. I keep asking for a production line because I do not think that one person can do it all. As you say, it is phases. Congrats on another GA. I nominated Margaret Anderson for DYK. SusunW (talk) 15:39, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
@SusunW: If you want to be truly helpful, you could have a look at Draft:Zella Jackson Price and see if there's any way of getting it up to mainspace. Rhonda wrote it and I tried to grab every source I can find, but it still didn't take. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 15:48, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
Ritchie333 lemme finish my re-write of Sue Bailey Thurman and I'll take a look. We truly, truly, truly need to get them to rewrite these notability guidelines. They exclude so many women because the reviewers take them way too literally. If I have 10 sources each saying a person is notable, though each sources may only include one line, how does that not meet notability? The way they are written, most editors assume you must have multiple complete articles on the person, which for historic women, that would be a rarity. If I have a web page from her university, a web page from the government of her country, a news article on women's day, a news article on the organization she worked for, none explicitly about her but all reliable sources claiming the woman was the first doctor, lawyer, or even baker, why is that not notable? Aggravates me to no end. SusunW (talk) 15:59, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
Thanks. I have Kathleen Andrews on my watchlist, not because I'm developing it (while there's probably more you can say about the first female bus dispatcher in Edmonton, Alberta, it'll be in local sources I can't find) but because I was paranoid somebody would come along and delete it with a rationale of "not enough sources". Or, I was looking up Jade's Crossing, a very well known local and poignant landmark, many news sources over several years, that I recall trying to look up here and discover it didn't even have an article. Or The Mariposa Trust, which AFAIK got speedy deleted three times before somebody (ie: moi) stopped bean counting the sources and used a bit of nous. I need to lie down because I'm feeling fed up. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 16:08, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
Ritchie333 WEARESOINAGREEMENT (WASIA) I have no idea even how to propose that they relook at this but add to it the whole no original sources nonsense. I get no original sources by the person involved but please tell me how a passport record or a census record or a university document created at the time of an event would be a less reliable as a source than a newspaper or magazine or book article created years after the fact with incorrect dates????? The guidelines as written leave no room for common sense. SusunW (talk) 16:36, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
The original reason for that guideline is because low profile people didn't want personal details like their date of birth exposed. Are you happy to tell everyone in a very public area on the internet how old you are - of course you're not! So we only publish that information when we have evidence that the person involved is happy to share it, or if it's "out in the open" anyway. I'm mentioned it before, but Keith Moon and Elisabeth Sladen did a pretty good job of fooling everybody how old they really were. Anyway, that's why the guideline was in place. Of course, there are situations where it doesn't apply, such as somebody who's been dead for 150 years, for instance, and there's nothing more bloody infuriating than somebody shouting some magical WP incantation of a policy or guideline without explaining what it means or why it applies! Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 16:42, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

@SusunW: Thankyou! Yes, I don't think GA needs a massive amount of work, just fairly adequate and written properly. I find I work best at either GA level or quick stubbing. More often than not now though I'm in the frame of mind that after 14 years, there's certaun core articles on here which really should be GA minimum and that's priority. I find it difficult to mass produce decent start/B class articles like you and Aymatth on a massive range of topics. I'm unlikely to write a start class article on a Mexican feminist or something, but if it was a core article on a Mexican actress or something I might be attracted in getting it to GA. I think Wp:Women should aim to get an article on a woman up to GA status a month alongside the stubbing work. Some of those Argentine actress articles you expanded might be worth it. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:39, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

Okay so do Tita 3:) you know I love my rogues. ;) I nominated my first GA on María Teresa Ferrari we'll see how it goes. SusunW (talk) 16:45, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
Eeks Susun, I would quickly remove the subst:GAR from the talk page on that one, it's more a C class article. The lede especially doesn't summarise the article.Amelia Bence has potential, we could aim to get that one up to GA, but hold off on nomming before it's ready!♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:53, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
I am never going to learn how to do it if I don't jump off a cliff and do one. It may just not be my thing, but Montanabw said I should try one. If nothing else, it will be a learning experience. I guess I don't really care which woman you do, I just think it'd be lovely to have a Latina done. SusunW (talk) 17:00, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
It's not a "hit and hope" thing though LOL. I guess it takes some time before you have a good idea of what constitutes a good article. For GA Ferrari would need more adequate career coverage, more than just one section. It would need to be highlight the major aspects of her life and career and have a lede which effectively summarises her career. I don't want to deter you but you'd be much better off nomming one of the Argentine actresses you expanded as a first attempt. As you've nommed María Teresa Ferrari now, I'd do my best to further improve in the meantime if I was you!♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:04, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

@Rosiestep: You and Susun could make a hotlist of core women articles you'd like to see brought up to GA status, and each month you could make it a goal to produce one GA together. I'd be happy to help out, especially if it's an actress.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:45, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

@Ritchie333: Would her having sung at Carnegie Hall pass muster for notability? (She says in her most southern drawl while batting her lashes) [1] I also find an article from 1967, so she was not a flash in the pan. Working on it. SusunW (talk) 19:39, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
@Ritchie333: Okay, tips for working women never assume their name. I found zero sources until I put in Zella Jackson. Her mama's married name was Cooper, so I used Zella Cooper too. She was indeed famous. To get beyond all of the 2015 stories of her reunion with her daughter, I put in a search range for google from 1995-2010. Bingo. I didn't resubmit it, I thought you might want to tweak it. SusunW (talk) 22:14, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
I like the idea of creating a list of women's bios which we could work on systematically towards a GAN. I think it could be set up as a regular area of work on WP:WikiProject Women, just like Women in Red focuses on creating new articles. It would be a way for new and seasoned editors to get experience with the article improvement process and really collaborate on an article. Yup, we should do that. Maybe copy this convo over to the project talkpage? --Rosiestep (talk) 03:21, 5 August 2015 (UTC)

@Ritchie333: See, that's why there's better overall editors than me on here. I might be super productive for a few days but then I'm the complete opposite and can't be bothered with the site!♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:29, 10 August 2015 (UTC)

My main motivation for productivity on here is when articles aren't good enough and I think I could do better. Unfortunately, I never seem to have the time I want and have to grab it from wherever I can. I am chipping away at Soho and Old Kent Road. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 11:33, 10 August 2015 (UTC)

@Ssven2: Thanks for the edits. I've finished the book now, it should be very comprehensive now. I'll open a peer review within the next week.♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:13, 5 August 2015 (UTC)

Glad to be of service, Doc. Do let me know when you have opened up the PR. BTW, I see you have Frank Sinatra in mind for GA (possibly FA). Coincidentally, his birthday is the same day as Rajinikanth's. I have already placed a TFA request for Enthiran to appear on the actor's 65th birthday. I'd be happy to move it to 11 December if it's alright (Something like what was done earlier for Gary Cooper).  Ssven2 Speak 2 me 09:22, 5 August 2015 (UTC)
So you've requested TFA on Enthiran on December 12th Ssven2? Yes, once I finish Kubrick I'm considering another grant request for Sinatra books, ideally I'd split the load with We hope though. It's his 100th anniversary on December 12th 2015 and would a great thing I think to have him as TFA on the day, I was considering doing it anyway. I think I'd need to read about a dozen to really do him justice. It would be a big project. I must resume with Kubrick at the moment now.♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:41, 5 August 2015 (UTC)
It's really daunting though isn't it, just look at the books in Frank Sinatra bibliography!!♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:50, 5 August 2015 (UTC)
Wow! It is. I think you may need more than your good self and We Hope for this.  Ssven2 Speak 2 me 10:01, 5 August 2015 (UTC)
The problem is knowing which are the best books to buy on him. Ideally a grant request for about 20 books, and split that between three or four people who can contribute. If I can get two or three others on board to work on it that would be best for somebody like Sinatra.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:09, 5 August 2015 (UTC)

"Steiger not only scooped the Oscar, but won a plethora of other awards, including a BAFTA, a Golden Globe, a Laurel Award, and awards for Best Actor from the National Society of Film Critics and the New York Film Critics Circle." and "He played another mobster, Sam Giancana, two years later in the TV miniseries, Sinatra (1992)." are unsourced. FYI.  Ssven2 Speak 2 me 07:37, 8 August 2015 (UTC)

Director list edit

Thanks for the thanks, Doc. What's your opinion of the director list I have created?  Ssven2 Speak 2 me 07:34, 8 August 2015 (UTC)

Looks like you've got some of the best ones right up there. You should watch some Renoir, Bresson or Truffaut though! Watch Au Hasard Balthazar, Boudu Saved From Drowning and The 400 Blows. Au Hasard Balthazar in particular is incredible.♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:50, 8 August 2015 (UTC)

Have you seen Taxi! or White Heat yet? Both classics.♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:58, 8 August 2015 (UTC)

And both are Cagney films. I'll definitely give them a look during my free time.  Ssven2 Speak 2 me 08:01, 8 August 2015 (UTC)

The Good Friend Award
I don't even know how to say how much your encouragement and help has meant. Thank you for Maria Teresa Ferrari. Even if she doesn't get approved, I learned a lot. Your encouragement with all of the articles has made an unwelcoming place brighter and besides that, I adore your quirky humor SusunW (talk) 15:14, 8 August 2015 (UTC)

Thanks Susun! Fingers crossed that Montanabw will pass it asap!♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:29, 8 August 2015 (UTC)

Even if she doesn't, it was a worthwhile endeavor. That someone who has virtually no articles in English and made such valuable contributions to women's health has been retrieved from obscurity is the whole reason I do this. Yes, I enjoy the research and the writing, but the real reward is learning. I may have found her and the sources but you and Ian's rewrite made it a much better piece. Guy Fawkes Night edit

You wrote on my talk page: "If you don't respect the work and quality of article then don't expect people to be 'civil' with you. I suggest you withdraw your ANI report at is just looks like you're screaming for attention and to attract the civility brigade and open another can of worms".

No one has recently been rude to me. If they are I will point them to the civility policy, if they persist then I will go to ANI. In this case the posting ANI was because of an edit war on Talk:Guy Fawkes Night:

My posting to ANI:

  • 20:07, 7 August 2015‎ PBS (→‎Talk:Guy Fawkes Night: new section)

As to your comment "If expect people to be 'civil' with you" I expect people to be courteous even if they disagree about the content of an article. This is a case of do as I do, not do as I say. I always try courteous to others and if you have any diffs where you think I have been breached the civility policy, I will be interested to see them.

-- PBS (talk) 20:55, 8 August 2015 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) I expect people not to trample over articles but it doesn't seem to stop them. Your expectations are as unrealistic and subjective as mine. - Sitush (talk) 21:07, 8 August 2015 (UTC)
  • PBS, do you actually do any good anywhere? You seem to be boardering on the obsessive with this one. CassiantoTalk 21:55, 8 August 2015 (UTC)
I have replied to Cassianto's question on User talk:Cassianto (diff) -- PBS (talk) 09:23, 9 August 2015 (UTC)

He wastes a lot of Cassianto, for sure, but unlike many of the others he does actually seem to produce something every now and then. William Warden (naval surgeon) is recent, though it was too much trouble to add categories. You wouldn't get that sort of thing from Chillum and Gorman.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:04, 9 August 2015 (UTC)

Gorman did go through a phase last year of trying to write things, before he decided to devote himself full-time to playing Defender of the Wiki. (Yes, they're all on highly marginal topics of dubious notability, but I'm not sure you're in a position to take issue with that.) Chillum, OTOH, has 4% of this year's edits to articles. – iridescent 10:14, 9 August 2015 (UTC)
Wow 4%!! I wonder what Knowledge Kid's and Tarc's percentages are! Seriously though, it should at least twig with these people that something is seriously wrong if on an encyclopedic building website 96% of your efforts don't go into articles whatsoever...♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:18, 9 August 2015 (UTC)

Feedback request edit

Hi, was just wondering, if you are not horribly busy, would you be able to take a look at an article improvement I've been drafting? I'm overhauling Marilyn Monroe's article as it's in pretty bad shape, and have re-written the section about her career, which you can find here. Given that Monroe is still so famous, I feel hesitant about completely replacing the section about her career without anyone else reviewing it first. I'm not intending to take this to GA/FA level, so I'm not looking for a super-thorough peer review per se, but would be very grateful if a couple of editors were able to read it through and give feedback :) I completely understand if you're too busy though! TrueHeartSusie3 (talk) 08:30, 10 August 2015 (UTC)TrueHeartSusie3

Let me read it later TrueHeartSusie3. I'd say it's probably fine to update but I'll read it first. I'd be happy to get it to GA with you. I think we can do that. May as well seems as you've put in that effort already.♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:43, 10 August 2015 (UTC)

Thanks, that would be great! And take your time, I'm not in a rush! TrueHeartSusie3 (talk) 09:48, 10 August 2015 (UTC)TrueHeartSusie3

@TrueHeartSusie3: It looks better than the current article, go ahead and update the main article and I'll fully read and begin working on the article later in the week.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:24, 10 August 2015 (UTC)   Like Getting to 500 may be easier than I thought it would be when it was proposed :) SusunW (talk) 16:50, 10 August 2015 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Ipswich Road, Colchester edit

The article Ipswich Road, Colchester you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold  . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. If these are fixed within 7 days, the article will pass; otherwise it may fail. See Talk:Ipswich Road, Colchester for things which need to be addressed. Livesey edit

Sorry to tread on your toes, but I've removed some of the more obvious errors from George Livesey, as it was making him sound like some kind of corporate genius and folk hero and some of it was flat-out untrue. (Never believe anything you read on Findagrave; it's user-generated and anyone can add any kind of nonsense, which is why Wikipedia has a blanket prohibition against treating it as a reliable source.) Livesey is a fairly well-documented figure; the National Gas Museum and the Museum of London Docklands will probably have books on him. This article—which despite being hosted on a blog is a cut-and-paste from a Greater London Industrial Archaeology Society publication so should be useable as a source—would be a reasonable starting point, if you want to do more with him without spending money or setting up inter-library loans.

Bear in mind my standard disclaimer about describing anything south of the Thames as "London" in the 19th century. The County of London only made its land-grab into Kent and Surrey in 1889; prior to that, other than the tiny exclave of Bridge Without around present-day London Bridge Station, there was no such place as "South London". ‑ iridescent 16:13, 11 August 2015 (UTC)

And I've sent you an email, best left at that because if I said what I thought of you after that edit summary Chillum would be slapping the cuffs on me. If you'd simply come here and said that I'd have agreed completely and thanked you for it, but after that edit summary I won't bother.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:15, 11 August 2015 (UTC)

Re: Bentworth edit

Dr. B. and @Jaguar:, I'm going to try to give some of the sourcing a shot--have already found a ref for Fisher's Camp (Thedden Grange-WWII) from a Durley History Society newsletter of 2009. I think the DHS may have disbanded, though. I'll try adding whatever I can for references--feel free to revert any and all edits I make if either of you think they don't fix the issues. We hope (talk) 18:30, 13 August 2015 (UTC)

Doc, I think I fixed everything I possibly can, but there are still some things that need work, like a RS for Jennie Green Lane, etc. We hope (talk) 21:17, 13 August 2015 (UTC)
Very helpful, thankyou We hope!♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:50, 13 August 2015 (UTC)
Thank you, We hope! I remember I had something for Jennie Green Lane a while back, so I'll see if I can find it. JAGUAR  13:04, 14 August 2015 (UTC)

Slightly belated but sincere thanks for the barnstar! :) Have added more but there are still things in the article which don't have RSs. The information about the children's home (find nothing on it) or on the huts built during WWII (same here). Some thimgs still pop out as surprises--see the Bentworth talk page for the ref for the children's home-a 1905 book. Have been just about everywhere I can think of-books & magazines at Google and old British newspapers. We hope (talk) 19:57, 14 August 2015 (UTC)

No idea how to correct the census information either--wouldn't know how to get recent census data from a USG source either. :-D We hope (talk) 20:01, 14 August 2015 (UTC)
Let me see what I can do with Bentworth sources. I know there appears to be a server offline re; the issue of the Gaston Grange PDF. Wayback Machine has 90 archived, but not the one we need. If the site comes back up later, I'll grab a copy of the PDF in case it goes down again. Let me try to see what I can do with the sources. Know I don't know how to get 2011 cites for the UK Census (Wouldn't know how to get 2010 ones for the US one, either.) We hope (talk) 17:05, 20 August 2015 (UTC)

Bence edit

I'm gonna back off the Bence articles, unless you need me. I've marked two that I was working on them and after I spent time searching and working up a piece, someone else had already done an article. I have no idea how to merge what I've done with what is there so I guess I just paste it in. No point in creating conflicts and I don't know how else to tell someone I have it when I've clearly marked it. There's lots of missing articles to be done on the page so I'm gonna hop to them. :) No harm no foul. SusunW (talk) 21:13, 13 August 2015 (UTC)

That was a clever escape! Don't worry I'm sure we'll get them all blue linked soon, even quicker once that cheque arrives in the post from Bence herself! ;-) ♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:49, 13 August 2015 (UTC)

?? She's paying who? LOL I really will be glad to help, but spent two days working on the last one and cannot move it as there was a 1 line article created. I don't know how else to tell someone I'm working it than to post on the page that I have taken one, so while you have other hands willing, I'll do something else. Truly, if you need me, gimme a shout. Otherwise, I'll be working on those Costa Ricans. SusunW (talk) 22:16, 13 August 2015 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Vineta-Festspiele edit

The article Vineta-Festspiele has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Absolutely zero sources for this article. It's been empty for almost 5 years.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. It looks like he's been quite busy lately. We can leave them at the talk page for later. File:Sterling_Hayden_1953.jpg This is the Sterling Hayden photo I promised; think the one from Kansas Pacific has to go because a check of copyright.gov shows copyright activity for the title by Allied Artists (film's owner) in 1981 (that would be 28 years from its debut in 1953). Not convinced the film is PD because there are a lot of listings for the title. We hope (talk) 13:49, 21 August 2015 (UTC)

Music community edit

Thanks for your support on this dumb discussion. It seems that even with a complete rewrite, fully-sourced to books and journals, these guys refuse to accept that any article can be written on a broad topic like this. Maybe they just can't handle admitting that their first opinion was wrong. Thanks anyway, Aymatth2 (talk) 13:13, 18 August 2015 (UTC)

It really is no different to a general article about Musical instrument or Musical ensemble. Daft. In any other context nobody would blink an eyelid! People are always quick to assume the worst in everything and can't admit that actually they might be wrong. Let's assume a Dutch construction firm paid for Dutch brick too, I know, let's delete it and ignore the large amount of coverage on it out of moral panic! If I got paid to write everything I've put up on here I'd be an extremely rich man! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:22, 18 August 2015 (UTC)

I'm not sure. I think it was "reserved" on August 8th and it's now the 21st. I don't think it's a good idea "reserving" an article for several weeks as somebody else might do it.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:23, 21 August 2015 (UTC)

Rashomon edit

Managed to catch it today. Really excellent film from Kurosawa! (In terms of both plot and filmmaking techniques). It put Kurosawa up at 4th place in my top 25 list. No wonder filmmakers were inspired to make films having similar concepts to Rashomon. Toshiro Mifune was fantastic! Great acting from him.   When I saw Mifune, I somehow felt that the character of Ujio from The Last Samurai (played by Hiroyuki Sanada) was very much inspired by Mifune's characters in Kurosawa's films. In face, Sanada himself models his expressions and looks based on Mifune. — Ssven2 Speak 2 me 04:53, 22 August 2015 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Gol Talab edit

The article Gol Talab has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Artificial pond (or "tank" in the vernacular). Sources verify that it exists, but not that it is notable. Searches (of the various Google types, HighBeam, JSTOR, and ProQuest) located some phrases like "area around Gol Talab", but did not locate any significant coverage of the tank itself in reliable sources. Does not meet WP:GEOFEAT.

Invitation to WikiProject TAFI edit

Hello, Dr. Blofeld. You're invited to join WikiProject Today's articles for improvement, a project dedicated to significantly improving articles with collaborative editing in a week's time.

Feel free to nominate an article for improvement at the project's Article nomination board. If interested in joining, please add your name to the list of members. Thanks for your consideration. North America1000 09:39, 27 August 2015 (UTC)

Name an article which doesn't need improvement!!♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:41, 27 August 2015 (UTC)

Ha! That's actually a tricky question. I'll go out on a limb and posit Yellowstone National Park as being pretty much there. North America1000 09:54, 27 August 2015 (UTC)
The project would benefit from experienced copy editors and article creators such as yourself. I'm on a short, yet hopefully fruitful crusade, working to increase membership there. North America1000 13:16, 27 August 2015 (UTC)
I sympathize with it, I really do, I think it's one of the most important things we can do on here. It's just in my experience a article of the day collaboration rarely works as most editors prefer editing what they want rather than somebody saying "expand this". It's not enough time too to really do a quality expansion. I think a monthly drive with a more relaxed approach and editors expanding what they want and stating so and perhaps a monthly "Let's get this to GA" would work better in the long term. I appreciate your efforts though to kickstart the project though.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:29, 27 August 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for your insights. The project has a Further collaboration area for those that want to collaborate past the week-long timeframe, but it hasn't been used much lately. North America1000 23:46, 27 August 2015 (UTC)

How strange, I thought the purpose of Wikipedia was to hob nob and drink expensive champagne with the Admin Corps and block anyone who looks at you in a funny way, what's all this "article improvement" stuff of which you speak? Anyway, I'm picking through the "Cultural references" section of Old Kent Road now and like every such section in every article ever it's like wading through thick tar, requiring about 47 sources per paragraph just to get all the facts cited properly. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 18:48, 29 August 2015 (UTC)

  • @Ritchie333: you forgot the slap a tag or a deletion notice on it and move along. "Get someone else to work on it" appears also to be a really important focus. :P SusunW (talk) 20:32, 1 September 2015 (UTC)
Ask Chillum, he's in a better position than me to answer that one! Old Kent Road is in great shape aside from culture now! Let me look at it tomorrow morning.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:51, 29 August 2015 (UTC)
It is, but for god's sake don't let them find out you're "one of us" Ritchie; I've heard the punishment committee is to be the resident admin on Jimbo's talk. CassiantoTalk 18:54, 29 August 2015 (UTC)
Well I think Old Kent Road is more or less good to go but sadly the Oscar Wilde connection seems to be limited to the Marquess of Queensbury (he of the "Posing sodomite" card) singing the eponymous song in a Soho club c. 1891. Still, we had Mr Wilde on the main page today thanks to Vine Street's DYK, so it's not all bad. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 20:26, 1 September 2015 (UTC)
Just spotted the "erotic" ;-) Well done on that. Will try to look at Old Kent Road tomorrow.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:28, 1 September 2015 (UTC)

Hi; I've put it on my list. Might get some time this weekend, possibly. Victoria County History of Sussex has some stuff, and I have the new version of the East Sussex Pevsner and a few other books. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 12:43, 27 August 2015 (UTC)

That's probably about as far as I can get at the moment. There are DYK possibilities; do you wish to nominate? Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 22:16, 30 August 2015 (UTC)
Cool. I'm sure other sources for further expansion are out there in various Sussex libraries; I'll see what I can find. If there's enough, a GA attempt would be possible. Yes, Hassocks is indeed where I lived for more than 30 years until a few years ago when I moved to Hove; Ditchling is the next village to the east (albeit on the other side of the county boundary) and is about a half-hour walk away. A nice place, although it can get a little touristy at times. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 13:08, 31 August 2015 (UTC)

If you want to have a laugh, read Alice Lon. She was another "Champagne Lady" for Lawrence Welk. Alice got fired because Welk thought she had shown a bit too much leg. (He called it "cheesecake".) The only one with that opinion was Welk; public outcry supporting Lon forced him to try re-hiring her, but he was too late, as she already had another job. We hope (talk) 20:47, 27 August 2015 (UTC)
That is indeed surprising as I'm sure most of us think of those old Hollywood/showbiz manager types as total sleazebags who'd encourage that sort of thing not object to it! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:20, 28 August 2015 (UTC)
Welk was a very straitlaced person and his main issue was continuing to present what he thought of as "family entertainment". His opinion was that Lon no longer fit into that category. Also remember this was in a time where Ed Sullivan decided Elvis' movements weren't "family entertainment" and ordered that for Presley's appearance on the show, Elvis would be shown only from the waist up. He had the control room black out the bottom portion of the picture so all those at home saw was Elvis from the waist up with the bottomm half of the screen being black. :-) We hope (talk) 13:51, 28 August 2015 (UTC)
Well I suppose Lon was lucky in a way he was like that, if he was anything like Liz Taylor's studio bosses he'd be asking for special treats in the back of limos ;-)♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:13, 28 August 2015 (UTC)

Amelia Bence edit

Am finding quite a bit at Lantern from Cine-Mundial (in Spanish). While I can read enough to understand that the photo is a still from Charlie Chan in the Secret Service from Monogram Pictures, I can't read well enough (and it's slow going because of that) to reliably say what the material says. I can post my links on her article talk page when I've finished searching.

There are some photos from various films which may work out to PD in the US because Cine-Mundial was published by Chalmers Publishing in New York for the Spanish-speaking film fan market. The magazines are old enough to qualify as PD not renewed in the US; copyright.gov is offline for maintenance until Monday but most to all of these seem to be old enough that a renewal check can be done with the UPenn books. Aydın Archaeological Museum, and disambiguation edit

Hi. Thanks for creating new Aydın Archaeological Museum article! As part of wp:DPL patrolling, I noticed it has two ambiguous links and tagged them. Perhaps they would be easy for you to clear? I wonder if by Nysa you meant Nisa (Lycia), which is in Turkey and has ruins, for example. Either way, keep up the good work! cheers, --doncram 04:07, 30 August 2015 (UTC)

I sorted out those, yup you're right, thanks.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:02, 30 August 2015 (UTC)

Hi... Also in 4 separate articles you recently added ambiguous links to Canal 9, and maybe you could easily fix them to either of:

while I cannot. FYI, you can see all the ambiguous links you created recently in the current New Article Dablinks Arranged by Editor report, and you can fix them easily by clicking "FIX" and selecting the proper choice from a drop-down menu. (Assuming that the proper choice is available on the corresponding disambiguation page. If it is not there, then adding the choice to the disambiguation page would be good, but starts to be more work.) Right at this moment you are a "leader" in that report with 20 recent dablinks, but when it is updated your position will change because I fixed some already. :) (Please note, no one should think that's a negative report, because editors doing good work often can create dablinks they're not aware of, or which aren't easy for themselves to fix, but which can be fixed later by others having more information.) --doncram 04:25, 30 August 2015 (UTC)

I haven't got time to check every link that's why, too much to do! I believe I left it as Canal 9 in many instances because it confused me. The article is saying the TV show was 1960 or 1962 yet once says it was only founded in 1965. So I didn't know which one it was so left it.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:04, 30 August 2015 (UTC)
Okay that makes sense, no problem, thank you for your attention. :) --doncram

The Pink Panther edit

Watched Peter Sellers' version today. Claudia Cardinale was so damn beautiful, ravishing and, in Madras Cockney terms, she was a "Semma figure, Semma kattai, Semma takkar!" (All three mean that she was beautiful. :-)) Couldn't take my eyes off her for one moment. Now I see why you took her article and Cortina D'Ampezzo to GA.  Ssven2 Speak 2 me 06:08, 30 August 2015 (UTC)

@Ssven2: Glad you enjoyed the location and Claudia!Did you see Once Upon a Time in the West afterwards? She has a lot more screen time in that. Also Girl with the Suitcase is one of my favourites of hers. I'd recommend For Your Eyes Only (film) if you really want a good look at Cortina BTW.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:00, 30 August 2015 (UTC)

Seen the James Bond film a couple of years ago. A lot of scenic locations in there too! Especially where the character of Bibi Dahl (Lynn-Holly Johnson) does her skating. Haven't yet seen the Sergio Leone one. I'll definitely look at it. — Ssven2 Speak 2 me 11:54, 30 August 2015 (UTC)
She plays a retired prostitute in it! Yes, where Bibi did her skating was in Cortina.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:58, 30 August 2015 (UTC)
BTW, Claudia also reminded me of this lovely lady. Amongst today's actresses, she would figure at the top of my list. Her looks in The Mask of Zorro and Entrapment are too good! ;-) — Ssven2 Speak 2 me 13:10, 30 August 2015 (UTC)
I'd forgotten those films, I'll add to my list. Yes, Zeta was gorgeous in the late 90s and early 2000s. Claudia was more brooding and sexy though IMO, well see Once Upon a Time and you'll see what I mean!♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:18, 30 August 2015 (UTC)

All levels of Wikipedia editing experience are welcome. RSVP and find more details →here← --Ipigott (talk) 10:57, 30 August 2015 (UTC)

  • With all your experience and contacts, maybe you could help to distribute the invitation to user groups, task forces, etc. And to any individual editors who might wish to participate.--Ipigott (talk) 11:04, 30 August 2015 (UTC)

@Ipigott: You've forgotten to add a |} at the end of all of the invitations so subsequent messages end up being inside it ;-) Can you fix? I've fixed here but you need to fix on all the pages you've left it at! I'm not going to try to shove anything down each other's throats. If people want to help out formally or informally as part of it then great. The best thing would be to put a note at the top of my talk page when the time comes that help creating articles for the drive would be welcome. If not then no worries. Whatever anybody's perception is of women drives on wikipedia, I do think though that 15% vs 85% which has been reported is pathetic and needs to improve which is why this is needed. I didn't realise it was quite that biased, I didn't believe the foundation figures on women editors, but I think this is actually accurate. I was going through the film critic categories for instance and very few were on women! I'm not going to go manic for it, but if I can I'll try to create a minimum of one article a day towards it.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:07, 30 August 2015 (UTC)

BTW I think you'd have more luck if you mentioned that just 15% of biographies on wikipedia are about women. I didn't realise it until recently so I doubt many others know either. That's a figure for me which would be most likely to prompt people to create.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:15, 30 August 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing this out and for your comments. The invitation links to Wikipedia:Meetup/Women in Red/2 where the 15% is mentioned. Sorry about the markup error. Now I'll have to go back over my 70 or so recent edits with the invitation. I've been trying to follow your advice on "stop telling people what to do" but it was probably not such a good idea after all. I should have left it to editors more experienced with invitations. And unless you had told me, I would have had no idea about how to fix the problem. You live and learn!--Ipigott (talk) 11:22, 30 August 2015 (UTC)
You are going to have to help me further with "|}". I tried to put it at the end of the message on the Intertranswiki talk page but as you will see, it is printed out in the message. I don't want to cause more trouble for all the people I've written to! Should it be on a separate line after I have signed with tildes?--Ipigott (talk) 11:35, 30 August 2015 (UTC)
Don't worry. I've fixed it now.--Ipigott (talk) 11:41, 30 August 2015 (UTC)

Thanks. Well, it's diffcult on wikipedia to organize things so I appreciate the effort you've made. In my experience though I think people generally warm better to advertising something on a board in which they can personally choose whether to participate or not. I think there's a lot of editors here who agree that there should be a better balance of biographies but wouldn't participate in the actual drive for several reasons. The best I can do I think would be to put up a notice on Sept 7 and ask people to consider helping create a few women biographies during that two week period, whether they want to be a formal part of it or not.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:46, 30 August 2015 (UTC)

Sinatra film photos edit

Have run into some stills from Sinatra's films-primarily those in the circa 1960s era. Have seen more photos from his earlier films but have to wait until the online copyright office reopens tomorrow to run a renewal check on the film magazines they're in. If they're not useful in his main article, they would likely be in the articles about the films. Will start getting them uploaded. We hope (talk) 17:17, 30 August 2015 (UTC)

Cool We hope . As many as you can find. I'll begin on Sinatra tomorrow I think, films for starters. Let's develop it chronologically for now and as it improves we can see if indeed the best thing is to split by topic rather than all in order. Contacted the library on Thurman BTW though the first email link didn't work. Hopefully we'll get a reply.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:30, 30 August 2015 (UTC)

File:Frank Sinatra as Tony Rome.jpg Just uploaded the first one. ;) We hope (talk) 17:36, 30 August 2015 (UTC)
