Transwiki project edit

First thing to do would be to write out the description of the project, what it intends to do. In this case, I'm thinking that is to translate articles. This could be done by using {{WikiProject}} to create a rough skeleton of a project. Beyond that, it is kind of up in the air, particularly for a project like this. One idea, and maybe not the best one?, would be to find languages which the members know, and create lists of articles in the various wikis which do not yet exist, or, if maybe shorter, lists of all articles, crossing out or removing other relevant articles as they are found and found to be acceptable, like at least a start class if the other language article is at least that much. I'm thinking with the bots and the various interwiki links this might not be as hard as it sounds. Those lists could possibly function as subpages. Then, maybe, a project banner, particular for articles which are FA in other languages, indicating their status in whatever language, I'm guessing English in this instance, to give members an idea of the possible relative quality of articles. I say "possible" because of the variant FA standards across the languages. Unfortunately, this isn't quite as straightforward a topic as most of the others, so I'm not as sure as I could be, but I'm guessing this might be at least a start. Excellent - I've also put myself down for French, as I can speak the language fluently. Anyhow, today I'll be working on lighthouses instead for the bulk of the day. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 17:12, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

I spend most of my time formatting the Filmfare Awards - all the categories. See Best Actor, Actress, Supporting actors, Best Female Playback. They were all very messy with nominations not being mentioned. Check out how they looked before. Enigmacent also did some categories like Best Film, Best Music Director and Best Director. I started working on them and now still have some pages waiting for me to format them.

At the end of the process I'm going to remove all the red links from all these category pages. However funny it may seem, there are directors who won a Filmfare, but don't have an article here. Many actors, singers and actresses (winning or nominated) are still redlinked. And that's why I'm happy I had I added all the nominations.

If I could expand Baseraa, I would. It's one of my all-time favourite films. A heart-breaking story. But as you said there's no much info on that. --ShahidTalk2me 08:52, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi again! I'm trying to get some fresh eyes on Yukon Quest before I submit it for another go at FAC. It's an article about sled dog racing, and I thought of you as someone who might not be familiar with the sport and could give me a good opinion on where it's unclear to an outside observer. If you can't do a full copy edit, even a quick readthrough would be appreciated if you have the time. As always, I'm more than willing to reciprocate with a review of my own for any article that needs one. :) JKBrooks85 (talk) 10:59, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

I'm a professional sled dog racer. I'm deeply offended. LOL just kidding, sure I'll have a look at it later. Dr. Blofeld White cat 11:01, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

You've got a lot of boilerplate text pasted about and a lot of it could be common if you're going to have standardised structure to things; See here; want more of that? The section above could go about the same route leaving just the lang-specific example on each page. Cheers, Jack Merridew 13:10, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

Transwiki edit

Thank you for thinking of me, but I must decline. For one, I have too many things on my plate to commit myself to more projects. On the other hand, there is a difference of philosophy and approach. My experience with rowiki has taught me that the standards of quality there (GAs and FAs included) are never properly enforced, that they have no actual system for verifying, maintaining and promoting quality, and that we might as well be starting the articles from scratch here (which is what I have been attempting to do for years now, presumably so successfully that it is rowiki who started "trans"-ing some of those articles in whole or in part). And I must add that, in some cases, translating what rowiki thinks is quality to enwiki will have to imply compromising enwiki's own standards of quality, for the sake of filling a redlink. And I for one am less annoyed by red links than by blue links to bad articles. Hope you won't hold this against me, Dahn (talk) 08:47, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

No you've got the wrong idea. I am well aware of some of the flaws in Romanian wiki and the idea is NOT to translate unreferenced articles which may be riddled with POV and well just be awful. If you think this is my idea I'm disappointed that you also don't think I am intelligent to exercise caution in such a project. The idea is that the project identifies what is missing and then manual editors in collaboration with wikiprojects and more informed individuals such as yourself for Romani for example decide what is notable and then start the article but using Reliable sources from elsewhere. In reagrds to Romanian wiki this would especially be the case because from what I've seen very few of its articles are of a good enough quality for here. The project is as much about drawing up a notable list of missing articles than it is creating articles andthe whole reason why I proposed the project was to improve the quality of transwikiying by using reliable sources to back up content for that very reason that lesser informed individuals working independently may create exactly the sort of rubbish articles that you loathe. This is exactly why an editor such as yourself would be needed to ensure that poor content is NOT transferred and to make a judgement on what or what is suitable as indeed to what article is notable by using reliable sources away from Romanian wiki. We may be able to generate a list of missing notable articles but if the equivalent articles on Romanian wiki are shoddy then they will not be translated, they will be created using reliable sources. Dr. Blofeld White cat 09:07, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

I stand corrected, and I do apologize if it seemed that I was attacking the project (or attributing the idea to you). It also seems that I did not look into the matter closely enough, and I missed the main scope of the project as you outline it.
Still, in addition to the "too much on my plate" thing, I have to say the project seems a tad overkill. For one, we all presumably have such lists in our heads (I know I do) - simply airing them won't have much practical use, and filing a list of redlinks is time-consuming with no guaranteed finality. It also carries the risk of transforming something unbound into a chore - at least, I know it gets to be that with me. And finally, if we do compile these lists, what's to say that we will be prevented from still dealing with the "rubbish articles"? Unless we focus disproportionate energy on the "chore" aspect of this project, and really start turning these out like in some factory, the likelihood is that we'll see the redlinks we gather turn into rubbish bluelinks, as they often do. The only difference is that it will all be in one place.
Yes, much of the above has to do with my idiosyncratic tendencies, but it all relates to how I edit. I still find what you do laudable, and hope it smoothly reaches its goal of improving quality, and, yes, I do trust both your intelligence and judgment (sorry if I ever gave you the wrong impression on that). But the project clashes with my style and creates a superfluous step in how I deal with structuring info (emphasis on "I"). That said, I do not object to the project existing, will follow up on its activity, and will even provide help as time permits and interest directs - it's just that I'd rather do it informally rather than formally, to minimize the chore aspect and not let people down. Most beautiful edit

You reverted an edit claiming that a woman is the "most beautiful in the world" here [1] and here [2], giving the explanation in one case that "it has much to do with their media image" and in the other that "this is a featured article". Neither address the point that the references themselves are subjective and biased. Did you note that the article on Aishwarya Rai also describes her as the "eighth wonder of the world"? Is there any limit to the hype that you would be willing to include in such reference sources? Piano non troppo (talk) 09:48, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

Hello edit

Thanks a ton. People don't get that such things need to be discussed first. They are very biased. They just hear that someone from Indian is called the most and they lose their mind. If they see all the reviews of Roger Ebert and his comments in his book he said: "Rai is the second most beautiful woman in the world". When he was asked who the MOST beautiful, he said "Her too!"

So you see. I don't think she is the most beautiful woman in the world, not even one of the most beautiful, but there is a fact that "she is cited" as such and it is very important.

Thanks again. ShahidTalk2me 19:05, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

Yeah - the thing is, I had hoped we'd have a bot to do that sort of thing. They could be sorted a bit more generally, perhaps - and a bot will catch most of the ones without interwiki links on them. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 14:05, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

I'd probably need some approval before doing that, given the templates are more or less "official" as opposed to project-specific. I've asked for that at the Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Council page, and should probably wait at least until the weekend, thus giving everyone a chance to see it, before doing anything. Yeah I hate it when somebody does that. It wastes everybody's time. Note I only started the article per a request at the wrong place in stub sorting to get rid of the note. I believed the requester would write a decent referenced articles on it. If that is all she can do it should be deleted. You could try speedying it again, if that fails again, then take it to AFD. It is wasting everybody's time by clinging on to it as it is pretty obvious what the result will be. Other than this how about a redirect to wiktionary. It isn't a hoax after all but not suitable for wikipedia.

It's not so much that I hate entertainers per se. What I can't stand is how we're expected to set them up on a pedestal like some kinds of objects to revere and worship, simply because they make a lot of money. And yes, Jolie does a lot of good with her money, and with her fame. But there's a heady undertone in the coverage of "why can't you be more like this"? And she has always seemed to me to be perfectly aware of how good she is, and to be pleased with herself for that. I want to give of myself because I want to, not because some celebrity tells me it's a good idea.
I'm not usually this angry, I promise. :-) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 16:21, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
Ah, Bono. As I once said to an acquaintance, as far as sanctimonious Irish bastards go, give me Jonathan Swift any ol' time.
On another note, I don't know whether to be fascinated or horrified that someone has actually sat down and drawn up a list of all the windmills in the Netherlands. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised; I have a distant cousin who's traced out his lineage from his first ancestor on these shores down about eight generations, and who took up two pages' worth of net space with it at one time. Talk about obsessive... --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 16:33, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
No, not especially. You've just caught me right after waking up on both days; I'm naturally a little sharper before I've had my breakfast. :-) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 16:45, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

Buildings edit

That sounds good, and I'll follow through more of the pages, checking for tweaks. Also, I awoke thinking about {{tl:Template:Intertranswiki/Buildings}}, and I just changed "Buildings and Structures Intertranswiki by language" to "Building and structure Intertranswiki by language" to conform with the actual category. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:06, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

Hey, Blofeld, thanks for the nice comment... I didn't immediately notice it. I got pulled in different directions earlier today, but I'll start the follow-up now.--Rosiestep (talk) 03:33, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

AWB edit

Sounds like there are some tasks that need doing, let me know and I'll have a look at them, or you could just file a WP:BOTREQ. Rich Farmbrough, 16:35, 7 August 2009 (UTC).

Bah and I just had them all cat'ed in "Lists of XXXX films by country or language" but they are gone now. Rich Farmbrough, 17:09, 7 August 2009 (UTC).

Yes, I think so I'm looking at this, however the first one I picked up is complex Erich_Peter_Neumann is dead and has a better ref, in his wifes (?), oresumably, biographical book. Rich Farmbrough, 17:21, 7 August 2009 (UTC).

Oh and the cat'ing lists of films is done, I created cats back to 1940 (matching the Argentine lists) and I think they are as fully populated as they should be. Rich Farmbrough, 17:23, 7 August 2009 (UTC).

Couple questions:

  • Where did the birth-date come from?
  • Is there an actual ref on the CDU website for these people? The German interwiki for the list is actually a "Kategorie"

(Incidentally there is a SmackBot task which will add {{Reflist}} if it is left out.)

Rich Farmbrough, 17:37, 7 August 2009 (UTC).

OK here is what I can reasonably and quickly do. I add the website as an external link, since it's not really a reference, remove the semi-spurious translate and the see-also - there is the cat at the bottom of the page. Since there is an Exapnd-de at the top, and a stub template at the bottom , I don't see any need to tag with "ref improve" right now. Since I have an approved SmackBot task to fix up defaultsort i am running that right now. Rich Farmbrough, 19:14, 7 August 2009 (UTC).

Dutch windmills edit

I see you've been busy. Can you create the articles in the style "Mill name, place" e.g. De Schoolmeester, Westzaan. A lot of Dutch and Flemish mills have the same name and those names will be required for disambiguation pages. Mjroots (talk) 17:13, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

OK, let me move the existing Drenthe articles, then I'll add correct wls. Mjroots (talk) 17:19, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
OK, Drenthe mill articles moved. Correct wls created for all on list. If a mill has more than one name, you can enter both in the infobox so that they appear under the image. Use a line break <br> between each name. You'll also need to create a redirect from the alternative name. Mjroots (talk) 17:48, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
BTW, would you mind tagging them with {{Wiki Project Mills|class=stub|importance=mid}}{{WikiProject Netherlands|class=|importance=}} as you create them. Mjroots (talk) 18:01, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

Nice work on the windmills, but the building dates for the ones I looked at are completely wrong.. I have seen 1999 and 2002.. I'm from the Netherlands and I can asure you that no new windmills have been built for at least a 100 years. Ruigeroeland (talk) 08:51, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

WikiProject Intertranswiki/Dutch edit

Concerning the mills: I think you are correct, it's probably the renovation date, although I'm no expert at all. I guess it's better to remove these dates? Better to have less info, but correct info.. Concerning the transwiki, I'm quite busy adding moth articles (also translating them from nl and also the german wikipedia), so I don't really have the time.. But if you need some help on a specific article, let me know and I'll see what I can do.. Ruigeroeland (talk) 09:04, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Rich Farmbrough seems to be taking care of that for you, next time you move an existing page please fix or have someone fix existing links right away, waiting only makes that job harder since some links might then be intentionally pointing to the original page name.

Not on holiday quite yet edit

I'm actually in Alaska now, so I still have some time to edit. I'll be around on and off (camping, hiking etc sometimes). Today I had been waiting for a package at home, so I had time to kill. (My passport with a shiny new Indian visa!) Now that it's arrived I may go for a hike if I find someone who has the day off. (I'm from a city but once you get out on a trail even an hour or so, you could easily fall off a mountain and no one would find you for ages! So it's good to have someone to hike with.) Sorry I hadn't responded to your template request yet - I don't really think maintenance templates should have links to wikiprojects. But maybe you should include a link to the project on the linked translation instructions page. Thoughts? Calliopejen1 (talk) 19:28, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

How about you write a section called "Coordination" on WP:TRANSLATE that basically is a summary of the transwiki project for non-hardcore users? Then a main link to the wp:transwiki page. That would probably be less daunting than the project page anyways and it seems a little more appropriate and less likely to be objected to. I'll see what I can do about the other constitutions. :) Calliopejen1 (talk) 19:35, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

I adopted a capitalisation scheme... these pages needed a specifier, so there may be some disambig work there. Notably Ash Shihr appears to be the same place as Ash Shahar. Scotland edit

Hi! It seems that this isn't a discussion about maps but about the period of validity of a consensus. Discussing standards, file formats (free scalable map), usage for colour-blind users (red dot on green map might be difficult for up to 10 % of male population), perhaps about showing St Kilda (if someone cares) or the correct shape of Scotland (the green version is quite north/south compressed) would have been interesting but I doubt that I'm the right one to join that. And some will say I'm prejudiced so I might be no help this time. NNW (talk) 15:40, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

I still think it's a question of time that OWN in maps is ending somehow. Standardization is hard to resist. :-) Btw there are two templates for Northern Ireland and even three for Wales so just create another one for Scotland and everybody can choose the one which he likes best. NNW (talk) 16:29, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

Brazilian Municipalities edit

Hi Dr. Blofeld. I appreciate you invitation to join the Brazilian wikiproject and I am tempting to accepted it. But my general ideia when I started editing was to do articles related to my home city Recife and something extra about the state Pernambuco, like I have did until now, with a few exceptions like the Largest Cities of Northeast Region, Brazil ( which isn't complete yet) and others I have on my mind. After I have seen the lack of information about the others state cities I started to try to fill this gap. Pernambuco has 185 municipalities and when I started we just got close to 40 on the wiki and most of all just telling us YXZ is a city in the Pernambuco state of Brazil. What I think is quite incomplete. What you have asked me todo so, to introduce a nice and informative infobox for every city is quite nice (and I still got 87 to do), was on my plans for a second phase, which I will gonna try to add the maps and try to find related photos (but firstly, I will have to learn how to work with photos and maps(the coordinates map is ok for me)). After, I have finnished the cities and a few extra articles more, my idea it is todo more researcheable articles like the one I mentioned above and Pernambuco Museums, Pernambuco Beaches. Thank You for your interest on the wikiproject. (Angenhariaus (talk) 19:59, 11 August 2009 (UTC))

Hey edit

How've you been????

Have you seen the trailer of Amelia (film)? ShahidTalk2me 12:28, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

Here you have the trailer. Tell me what you think. I'm surprised Mira Nair directs an all-out mainstream Hollywood film. I'm impressed you remember I suggested you to watch Junoon. Have you heard of Jennifer Kendal? She is a British actress who got married to Shashi Kapoor. She was nominated for a BAFTA for an exceptional performance in an Indian film. And she was fantastic in Junoon. I started writing a draft of her lead. I thought it would be possible to make an FA about her because she acted in only 7 films. She was mostly a theatre actress. Yesterday I created the Silver Hugo Award for Best Actress BTW. ShahidTalk2me 12:42, 13 August 2009 (UTC)
I believe Swank is gonna get another Oscar. But no one really knows how it will be received so let's wait. As far as I know, they are known to be quite unfair by giving Oscars to those who did not get them already. They always give compensation awards at the expense of more desrving actors. As always Meryl Streep's talent is taken for granted. I think she was amazing in Doubt. But Kate Winslet was great in the Reader and she didn't get an Oscar in the past so they gave her a compensation award. She did deserve, but not more than the others. Kate Winslet - as always good, as always nude. ShahidTalk2me 13:02, 13 August 2009 (UTC)
Leaving Streep aside, among the young actresses - Cate Blanchett is the best. It's a shame she does not act in many films nowadays. She has the quality that very few actors have. And she is one of the few actresses whom I can watch in any film - no matter what - and still like her. ShahidTalk2me 13:16, 13 August 2009 (UTC)
Yes LOL!!! BTW, who's the best comic actress according to you? I have two names in mind - let's see if you guess them right! ShahidTalk2me 13:25, 13 August 2009 (UTC)
Well my take is - first of all Diane Keaton who is according to me the best comic actress, and Shirley Maclaine.
BTW, in India the best comic actress is according to me Hema Malini, followed by Sridevi and Juhi Chawla ShahidTalk2me 14:12, 13 August 2009 (UTC)
Oh well LOL - so you agree about Keaton and Maclaine? ShahidTalk2me 14:22, 13 August 2009 (UTC)
I knew you would be surprised but Hemaji was mostly acting in comic roles and in addition to being an accomplished dancer, she was also a fantastic action heroine (yes yes you read it right!!!). Her Basanti of Sholay is one of the funniest characters ever. She was the real relief of this film. And her comic performance in Seeta Aur Geeta is just superb (she played a dual role of two sisters - fantastic comedy of errors). See this scene when the police inspector mistakes her for her twin sister, and she makes a mess at the police station. You don't have to understand the language - you'll understand it anyway. It's such a hilarious scene. ShahidTalk2me 14:50, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

Off-topic to the rest of the section, tho the section title fits so... Just to let you know, your vpp thread has activity, if you're up for reading a large block of text. Cheers, Whitehorse1 16:45, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

Tandoori curry? Hey the photo is seemingly of her sister Seeta who the police inspector mistakes her for. I liked when she takes his cup of water just at the moment he wants to drink, and the entire mess she made in the station. This is such a funny film. I would recommend you to watch it but on youtube it is without subtitles unfortunately. ShahidTalk2me 18:06, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

Gordian knot edit

Trouble is these articles are so rubbish. See Pir Wadhai and GULYANA - both were forked, one was 90% junk. Rich Farmbrough, 15:16, 14 August 2009 (UTC).

Tell me about it. I have been bold and decided that Rahim Yar Khan is three words as the article said but the title didn't - now I am telling all the links. The district category was even forked. And then I found content fork at tribal articles.. sigh.. Rich Farmbrough, 17:31, 14 August 2009 (UTC). According to Wikipedia:WikiProject Pakistan/Cleanup listing "7054 articles are assigned to this project, of which 3280, or 46.5%, are flagged for cleanup." That is probably a little light. Of course whoo knows how many people look at that page[4]? Rich Farmbrough, 19:39, 14 August 2009 (UTC).

Hello,

Been off wiki for a few days, so just seen your message, I must confess you have done a good job with the Pakistan infobox :-) .... it had crossed my mind a couple of times whether or not the flags should be included in the infobox. Oh and I had noticed that you created the Iran templates and that they were being translated albeit haphazardly by several editors. ;-) Pahari Sahib 10:04, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

Redirect edit

I saw the mudslide article I created got redirected to Typhoon Morakot. Clans edit

I have tried editting some of the articles. The problem is clan loyalties are a real issue in South Asia, and people like to exagerate the importance of their clans, and take offence, when you take out names of minor individuals, people take great offence.

Category:Articles needing translation from French Wikipedia edit

Please help translate commune articles from French wikipedia!! Your contributions are greatly needed!! Dr. Blofeld White cat 17:56, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

Yes. I do indeed intend to revert to doing quick translations of commune entries from French-wiki from time to time, but currently my wiki time is otherwise engaged, and I need to progress that other project in order to be able to put my old motor magazines back into their boxes, and thereby recover access for myself and the rest of the family to the (rest of the) loft. (Also, I found that if I did too many commune translations in succession they became repetitive or even soporific: it's good to do one dept at a time, because that way one ends up knowing a bit more of the local history and geography which reduces the risk of silly mistakes. And yet....) Anyhow, for better and worse, it doesn't look as though we'll run out of items to translate on French communes (and communes from elsewhere in mainland Europe) any time soon. Blof could you please state your opinion on the Hrithik Roshan talk page? To satisfy his ego, user:theredpenofdoom started an RfC about whether titles/headings for sections are appropriate. I don't understand why he did it on this particular page when so many FAs use this standard and this needs to be discussed elsewhere, but anyway. I told him and explained that such titles are very proper summaries for a section, but he had nothing to say so hee started an RfC. I need you to state your opinion. Well, a) I'm not always intuitively aware of other people's time zones (especially in mid-August when it can get too hot for me to follow a premise through to its ultimate conclusion), and b) your account did create some +20 more articles in the time after you said you were done for the night. Please don't perceive this as criticism, mind you - I fully concede that what you're doing is for the good of the project as a whole (remember, you were the first to be put on JVbot's whitelist after I nagged Jayvdb into creating it, and I'm pretty sure you were one of the first to be ported from the whitelist into the autopatrol group). It's just that you may have done some minor, transient damage to some people's egos. DS (talk) 12:54, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

Bulkur edit

Hey, need your help. I see that you created this article based on the entry in the 1988 edition of Hutchinson Encyclopedia. Could you, please, let me know what exactly that entry says? As an inhabited locality, this place no longer exists (it's not in any of the Sakha's registries), but I am having hard time tracing anything to confirm its abolishment. I kind of suspect it may not have been an inhabited locality (but rather a mining post or something), but I can't confirm that either based on what I have. Any bit of info you could provide would be greatly appreciated.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 15:04, August 17, 2009 (UTC)

The google hits are mostly for the Bulkur River, which is most definitely at the coordinates you specified; and some other hits are ambiguous (i.e., it could be about a village, or a river, or a mining post, or whatever). "Река" also means "river". I'll keep looking, of course, but one thing that's 100% certain is that there is no populated place at these coordinates now. I would also speculate that if there ever was one, it was abolished in the 1980s, and it never was an urban-type settlement to start with (those are pretty well-documented; I would have found something by now). Mind if I move the article to Bulkur River and modify it accordingly? If something else comes up, we can re-start "Bulkur" no problem.
Tilichiki, by the way, is fine. I added it to my "to clean-up" list, but the village does still exist.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 15:35, August 17, 2009 (UTC)
OK, I'll move the article to "Bulkur River" and will keep my eyes open for anything about a possible settlement that existed in that area. "Machevna" also seems to be a problem—no inhabited locality by this name exists in Kamchatka Krai any longer, but I'll need to check a few more sources to determine when it was abolished (and whether it was an inhabited locality to begin with). I'll keep you posted on that one. Thanks for your help! Cheers,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 15:50, August 17, 2009 (UTC)
Oh, I by no means disbelieve what you are saying. I'm just saying that we need more information, and that the place no longer exists as of today. By the way, I've just dug up something in my legislative collection—as of 2007, there were three designated (industrial) fishing areas on the left bank of the Bulkur River, but they are not incorporated as an inhabited locality and, by the looks of it, are seasonal. Perhaps there used to be a permanent settlement there, perhaps not—we need more data! I promise to keep looking :)
"Machevna" is also bound to show up in searches, because that's the name of the bay on which the alleged inhabited locality used to stand. I need to do more research on this one, though.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 16:02, August 17, 2009 (UTC)
Well, the encyclopedia you have is pretty outdated; it was not necessarily inaccurate at the time it was published. My sources on renamed/abolished/etc places reliably go back only to the early 1990s, the coverage of anything before that is pretty much haphazard. If a place was abolished in the 1980s, a reference can be quite hard to find. We need to be able to reconcile this in Wikipedia somehow; I just don't think presenting a place as existing based on an entry in the 1980s encyclopedia is a good practice; at least not when it is no longer listed in any modern sources.
On the other hand, why Machevna would be shown of the same size as Magadan, that beats me :) By the 1980s, Magadan was a sizable town already, not to mention the largest in that area.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 16:16, August 17, 2009 (UTC)
Kezhma and Nevanka are both villages, not urban-type settlements. Yukti is a red link—did you mean something else? Simenga I can't find at all. Research, research, research, cleanup, cleanup, cleanup :)—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 16:42, August 17, 2009 (UTC)

1948-villages edit

The only time I have run into you before, AFAIK, is on Cinema of Palestine, where you created some very nice and useful templates. Which I thanked you for, AFAICR. That is why I am so *very* disappointed with you now: you just storm ahead with no regard whatsoever for other editors. And who is "owning" articles here? Again: my goal is to get the job done with as little hassle as possible. You have NOT helped, but just increased the total work-load for us regulars. ...and then you run away to your "million other articles". Well, thanks buddy </sarcasm> Huldra (talk) 18:50, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

I did not say that you had not written other Palestinian articles...I just mentioned where I had ecountered you. And it is rather difficult to AGF when you just remove my comments from your talk-page ...without response. Just for the record: I do not want you blocked *now*..the damage is done.:( What you cannot seem to understand, is that you have made it more difficult to clean up...and that you certainly don´t take my word for it. Well, anyway, I *will* ask for Adf for each of them. What a damn wast of time, in the short run; but better in the long run. Ps: perhaps you could listen a bit to other editors in the future, and not think that you *know best*, always? Huldra (talk)
Oh, please don´t be absurd: I have hardly done anything *but* expand previously created article-stubs. And the articles that you actually bother doing some work on: why, those I of course will not ask to be deleted. Huldra (talk) 19:19, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
Huh? "You don't see wikipedia as a long term project" ..I´ve been here for years...I´ve been cleaning up the 48-villages for most of that...and I should not see wp as a long-term project?? I have been trying to tell you, but apparently (obviously!) I am not getting though to you. Having *all* villages covered makes it much more difficult (=impossible) to see which ones needs clean-up, and which ones do not. And having watched this "arena" for ages; there has never been a lack of articles to clean up! (I suspect some of them are started by refugees..whose English is none too good, see here, e.g. Al-Ja'una) If you kept an eye on Wikipedia:WikiProject Palestine/New articles you would know this.. Huldra (talk) 19:37, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
Well, YOU start cleaning up, bacause I am leaving. I had never, ever thought I would meet such an arrogant person like you. Now, happy? Now you can do it *all* you way. Huldra (talk) 19:53, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
No way, you $%%/&/&3. I come back when you have deleted all your totally useless articles..so that I can see which need work and which do not. In other words: never. (Because you are perfect, aren´t you? You *never* do mistakes, do you?) Good-bye,Huldra (talk) 20:08, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
User talk:Huldra#The blue soup. Your choice. Huldra (talk) 02:28, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Well if it was to my choice I would rather the cream of mushroom soup, blue soup is a little too blue for my taste. It is your choice not mine, you should feel utterly embarrassed by your irrational Doc Brown behaviour. Especially when you see what I have in the pipeline for these completely manageable articles that left you quaking in your boots. Anybody would think the previous articles were all FA class. Most of them could be filled out to a similar length in 10 minutes. Dr. Blofeld White cat 11:45, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Does $%%/&/&3 mean being rich, balancing two Polo spearmints on a skateboard and being a member of G3. If so I would be overwhelmed to be or does it mean something rather Aevil?. I honestly think you are overeacting and need to chill out. Did I say I was perfect and never make mistakes? Do you think I would not wish to have the abilities to write full articles instantly on creation. Nothing is ever as bad as it seems, it really isn't. Reply edit

Greetings Dr. Blofeld, I certainly do not think you're evil ;) I also realize that you're intentions were good. The way Huldra and I (and maybe a couple of other editors also) wanted to create the articles is a personal preference (not necessarrily reaching GA or FA for each one, but at least starts). Therefore, I don't see that you have made any real violations. About the red links, I (and I believe Huldra as well) don't like them either... who does really? Again, while I don't agree with your particular method, seeing that what's done has been done, I'll gladly help out in expanding them. I noticed you are expanding some of them (thanks for that), but I also noticed you are using Palestine Remembered. We used to use that website in the past, but were pressured numerous times not to because many saw it as an unreliable source. Since then, we have been mostly using our own books (like Walid Khalidi's All That Remains) or online books to get info on the villages. I truly hope all of us could have a lively discussion about how to improve all of the 1948 village very soon on the WP Palestine talk page. I also hope Huldra will not retire... she really is a great editor and person. Cheers doc, --Al Ameer son (talk) 21:07, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for your efforts Dr. B. I have the Khalidi book so I'll go around expanding some of the articles. At the moment, I'm a little busy with other articles that I've committed to so I probably won't be editing the '48 villages pronto. I will expand one or two later today though. --Al Ameer son (talk) 15:59, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
That is something I suggested a while back, but faced opposition to. I strongly urge you take it up at the WP Palestine talkpage so we don't get into a big dispute. --Al Ameer son (talk) 16:49, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
I can't answer that question. Generally they (those who prefer a broader template) like to easily navigate through all of the 1948 village articles instead of just the villages in their particular district (which actually are sub-districts, not primary districts i.e. Galilee, Samaria, Lydda, Haifa, Jerusalem, Gaza). --Al Ameer son (talk) 16:58, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
Well of course project pages can't dictate the material in articles and templates, it's just good to leave the project a note. Huldra, as you know, is a very active editor dedicated to quality. Her work here has been immeasurable (and I'm not exagerrating) so yes, it's great that you're trying to sway her into staying. Btw, you keep spelling her name as "Hulcha", is this a repetive typo or like a nickname? On a slightly seperate note, I like the font scheme you've been using for the template, looks better. --Al Ameer son (talk) 17:07, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Palestinian villages edit

Hi Blofeld!

I have noticed that you suddenly created over 100 articles on Palestinian villages. Most of the articles do not have any usable content, and link to a personal website that is not a reliable source for Wikipedia, palestineremembered.com . I humbly request that you either manually or automatically fix this problem, as it would take too long to do for someone else. —Ynhockey (Talk) 22:50, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

I used a source that was used in many other articles that Huldra had edited. I assumed therefore it was reliable and acceptable. Dr. Blofeld White cat 09:03, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for the reply. To Huldra's credit, (s)he has not actually been using this source. It is a source left over from a new editor (at the time) who created the initial set of several dozen articles on the subject. I am looking forward to your contributions! —Ynhockey (Talk) 14:11, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

They just don't understand what constructive means when they're on Wikipedia. And trying to explain them is very difficult. The guy yesterday is just another sock who never learns from mistakes, keeps adding POV and admiration, insulting other editors and getting blocked. ShahidTalk2me 11:02, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

I don't think so, although I believe he finds it very hard that three editors disagree with what he says. ShahidTalk2me 12:23, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
What's up with users massages on your talk page? You won't believe this. A few weeks ago, I edited the Playback singer article - it was like a fansite. I copyedited the article, added sources from books and reputable sources, and today, one user reverted the entire article to a very old version and has been keeping doing that. Unbelievable. ShahidTalk2me 21:21, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
Blof I need a little help on the Talk:Playback singer page. As I told, yesterday the page was brutally reverted to a very old version by a user who is a big fan of two south singers (he himself seems to belong to the bracket of [what I talked to you about via e-mail a year or so ago] south Indians). I only kept adding sources.
As you yourself are full aware that of the nationwide impact of Lata and Asha, you will laugh at what this guy is saying. While they're clearly two of the best-known, most famous, veteran and prolific singers singers in India, the user claims they are not at all popular, and if they are, it's only in Hindi cinema (a big piece of a joke). He keeps reverting the article to his own version, which donsn't mention them at all. I only kept adding reputable sources and cited the best of sources on the article talk page. Back in time the article used to mention that until he came in May. And after so much work, adding sources from books and newspapers (and reputable magazines like Billboard), he still reverts. Now he says that while Mangeshkar may have popularity (my God what can he say about someone who's been featured on Guinness for almost two decades and has more than 50,000 songs to her credit??), Bhosle is not popular, when you yourself stated that you are more aware actually of Bhosle.
I need you to comment on the talk page because he does not stop, and he also says I'm doing it all cause I'm a fan. ShahidTalk2me 15:14, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
Exactly man! Not the fact that it was removed but the fact that it was said in such a way. They have always been known as the legendary duo sisters. In India, Lataji was the most popular followed by Ashaji. Out side of India it was the contrary (Brimful of Ashaaa!! LOL!). You know that today they are occsionally credited as "Living Legend Lata/Asha" in films?? He is ridiculing himsef terribly. ShahidTalk2me 15:52, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
Exactly I already told you once via e-mail what's going on within India. I know that from my own experience. And this comes across so clearly in every aspect of our life, even when it comes to films. ShahidTalk2me 16:00, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
Have a nice day and talk2me. ShahidTalk2me 11:54, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
It doesn't matter buddy. I didn't come to blame you. I came to say genuinely say hello. What I find interesting is the user on talk:playback singer - LOL!! He says you're doing it for me cause we're friends and tells you: "If like you who don't know about Indian film industry never write anything about it." - LOL!! And he says I'm a relative of Sunidhi Chauhan, and he says those who sang less than 1000 songs in their career don't deserve a mention. I enjoyed reading his message. It was a great fun. ShahidTalk2me 12:01, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
Hey man I don't think you ignored me. It's OK!! :))) You didn't forget her did you? ShahidTalk2me 12:05, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
He says I'm a relative of Sunidhi Chauhan!!! Actually she is my sister LOL!! And Lataji and Ashaji are my grandmas LOL!!! And you may be a member of Cornershop that's why you support them LOLZ!! ShahidTalk2me 12:09, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
Amazing, extraordinary!!!! At 2:15, when he suddenly starts doing it faster is just amazing!
I also wrote him a message. He is a guy from the south who cannot really stand the fact that his favourite singers are not recognised as much. His way of brutally expressing his own opinions on Wikipedia is terrible (they are nothing), and comparing these singers most of whom were not even born when Lata and Asha started singing in the 1940s. This was the way the page was in the past but he removed it, and he came back. What will he say about Billboard citing them as India's greatest singers. Well. ShahidTalk2me 13:11, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
See Vani Jayaram's IMDb profile - 92 films! ShahidTalk2me 13:25, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
Blof could you please put a notice at WT:ACTOR about the so unnecessary discussion taking place on Talk:Hrithik Roshan. I think this is stupid that the use of heading titles, which constitute a well known Wikipedia standard made by commoc sense and are used in some of the best articles on Wikipedia (FAs), is discussed specifically on this talk page when it actually belongs to a much wider noticeboard. It's absurd, since if it is to be, say, discouraged or deprecated, it must be done as a rule for the entire Wikipedia. ShahidTalk2me 18:41, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
Of course I listened. It was amazing! I wrote you above: "Amazing, extraordinary!!!! At 2:15, when he suddenly starts doing it faster is just amazing!" ShahidTalk2me 20:40, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

about the villages edit

Hi Dr. Blofeld. I don't want to comment on the whole controversy that has led to Huldra leaving right now. I'd appreciate it deeply though if you would discuss major changes you are making to the template for the depopulated villages at WP:PALESTINE. The template was a collaborative effort and your splitting up of it to separate districts, while possibly useful, is something other people should be consulted about prior, so as to garner some support, so that your work is not challenged or undone and you don't feel that you have wasted your time. I'm also a little concerned by your introduction of the term "settlements" to refer to the villages. In Israeli-Palestinian conflict parlance, this is a term used to refer to Israeli settlements and is traditionally not used to refer to Palestinian villages and towns. Would you mind going to WP:PALESTINE and putting forward your proposed template changes there before continuing to add them to articles? Thanks. Tiamuttalk 17:44, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing that out to me. Waiting a bit before proceeding might be better, but whatever, I know what its like to be excited about something.
Would you mind changing the term "settlements" to "towns and villages"? No cities are listed in the template and those two terms can cover what is listed. Given the specific meaning of "settlements" in this conflict, I think it's important.
Thanks for your work and consideration. Happy editing. Tiamuttalk 17:52, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
I realize that in the world "settlements" has a more general connotation. In this conflict, however, it has a specific meaning. If you do not want to use two words, might I suggest "localities"? Tiamuttalk 17:54, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
Thanks to you for accepting a substitute. Cheers. Tiamuttalk 18:03, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
Fine with me. Tiamuttalk 18:10, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
I know what its like to be frustrated at massive changes to things I have been working on, even if done with the best of intentions. When you spend years working on a particular subject area and you have your own sense of the internal organization of the topic, comprehensive changes made suddenly can indeed make it feel like your head is going to explode (you must know it too, as does every Wikipedia editor worth his salt). From my experience, its generally best to just let people take the space they need to process, so that they can decide how and when (or if) they want to continue contributing here. Its so hard for all of us communicating via bytes, without smiles or glances, or the sounds of one another's voices and sometimes we lack humanity and sensitivity when dealing with one another as a result. Anyway, I'm rambling because I don't really know what to say. I don't want to make you feel bad or anything, but I love Huldra, she's one of my very favourite people to edit with, and I would be very upset if she left. I don't doubt your intentions, but I do wish this never happened. I appreciate your enthusiasm and the fact that it took you much time, but I do wish you asked at the template talk page or the project page before doing it so that this could have maybe been avoided. I'm not trying to downplay your work nor do I want to be dismissive, its just that, like I said, I love Huldra, and do not want to lose her. Anyway, here's hoping for the best. Tiamuttalk 18:40, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
Your content-building efforts are appreciated. Redlinks are there to be filled. People have essentially just disagreed as to the process. Sharing the same end, I'm sure we will eventually find a way to works things out. Happy editing. Tiamuttalk 18:54, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
About Al-Qris Horkins, I don't know this village and have not found anything under that name or anything close. It may be a hoax edit. I'll ask Al Ameer son if he knows it. If not, he can speedily delete, because its not listed at Palestine Remembered which is the source cited. Tiamuttalk 20:39, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
We are all fallible. Thanks for the email. Tiamuttalk 20:56, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
Of course I will still talk to you. I hope everyone will let what has happened go. We have a lot of work to do and need to work with one another, not against one another. Take care, Tiamuttalk 10:25, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
No, for the time being, I'm just going to add some stuff I have in user space to the stubs. Huldra has some stuff in her user space too at User:Huldra/Sources which she encouraged us to use and check in the past, so I'll add from stuff from there too. If I do end up focusing on one, I'll let you know, so you can pitch in. Cool? Tiamuttalk 11:19, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
Same problem here in Nazareth. No libraries at all. I rely heavily on google books and on people who do have the books we need. I think I'll order Khalidi's book soon. Parts of Morris can be seen online but Khalidi has no preview function available. Anyway, do what you can, and I'll do what I can. Al Ameer son has Khalidi's book if we ever want to ask about something. Happy editing. Tiamuttalk 11:39, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for thinking my hometown is so cool. ;) We like it. Its tough sometimes with the regional situation begin what it is, but I wouldn't trade Nazareth for the world. Everytime I leave I find myself craving it like crazy. To me its like an old pair of shoes that you can never throw out, no matter how worn down they become, because there isn't another pair that's anywhere near as comfortable. Tiamuttalk 11:49, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
Actually, the coverage of Nazareth is pretty piss poor here. I've tried to add things, but its difficult sometimes, for reasons I'd rather not get into. But I'm planning on taking some pictures around town soon to add to articles or to start articles on things not covered. So much to do, so little time! Tiamuttalk 12:01, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
I love old buildings, that's a very nice shot of it. Your town looks beautiful too. The article on it is good. Tiamuttalk 12:14, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
Yes, I edit those village articles a lot, just not so much lately because of other article subjects (still related to Palestine and the Arab world though). Just pick a village article or two articles and I'll add what I can from Khalidi. Cheers, --Al Ameer son (talk) 17:51, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Template:Infobox Pakistani city - Need a "City Caption" edit

Hi,

In refernce to ((Template:Infobox Pakistani city)): I see you know how to edit this template. We need a city_caption below the city_image. so we can add details of what the city_image represents. Cheers --Fast track (talk) 17:05, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Hello edit

Hey Blofeld!!! How are you?? I need to ask a favor from you. I know your first encounter with Kapoor's FAC wasn't that pleasant though I was wondering whether you would be willing to participate in another FAC for Kapoor's article. I am in no rush to nominate the article though I want to take things slow this time. In the coming months, I was wondering whether we could find a couple of editors to help improve the article by copyediting it, fixing its prose, etc. Then, sometime around the end of this year or early next year, I was thinking that we could nominate the article. So what do you say?? -- Bollywood Dreamz talk 17:11, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

No problem buddy!! I definitely understand your dilemma. I just need a couple of people to copyedit the article. If we get some new people to look at the article, it will definitely help. Shahid, you and I have already the best we could do and it's about time we get some new people to look at the article. If you know anyone that can take a look at the article and copyedit it, please let me know. I would greatly appreciate it. Regards -- Bollywood Dreamz talk 01:58, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

Sfânta Elena edit

Hi Dr. Blofeld. Sorry for bothering you. Could you help me with something, please? I came back from my vacation and I've created an article about beautiful Romanian village Sfânta Elena. The problem is, that I'm totally incompetent to fill in just the basic facts in that huge infobox. I'm doing it for the first time and it's really superhuman task for me. Can you add at least the basic geographical facts there? You are one of the real experts in this area here on Wikipedia. I'm helpless and I just want the correct information there. Thanks many times. --Vejvančický (talk) 21:07, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

I should note that the general move with Romanian villages was to fold the relevant info back into the commune article, so as not to end up with many tiny articles on what is more or less the same topic (meaning that whatever isn't the same topic can still fit into a section of the commune article). Once the unreliable sources and respective info are removed from Sfânta Elena, we end up with something that can easily and neatly work as a section of Coronini (which is otherwise supposed to be... what?). Dahn (talk) 21:23, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Man, why does so much work need doing on communes everywhere!!! SCREAM!. Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:35, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Oh, that. Well, part of the reason is this forking thing. Another is that the sources are really hard to come by on such small units (yet one more reason to avoid even smaller articles). On ro:wiki, they have not figured it out or sorted the matter in either direction, which leaves them with a heap of ridiculous articles on villages (where unsourced oral history rants take the forefront) and permastubs on communes. Dahn (talk) 21:44, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Indonesian wiki is probably even worse still. All of the kecamatan (municipalities) have been started as unreferenced half liners. Real shame. If anybody tries to unload them onto us in a similar fashion I will take swift action as will Mr. SatuSaro I'm sure! We have enough to sort out with the districts let alone kecamatan! Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:48, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks again, Blofeld. I should send you a bottle of good Timisoreana beer! Dahn: You don't consider sources in Sfânta Elena as reliable? Several other books were published in Czechoslovakia/Czech Republic on this topic (Czech colonization and villages in Banat) I think it's good to have detailed and correct information about each village. It isn't my personal research. Otherwise I'm not perfectly informed about Wikipedia standards in this area. --Vejvančický (talk) 21:55, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
Vejvančický, one source I can see that is surely not reliable is genealogyRo. I can also see entire and presumably important passages that make claims not backed by any citation. I can also see that you have one book listed as a reference, but it is not at all cited. That is the sourcing I see, and I also see some frankly absurd statements, such as Austria-Hungary existing in the wake of the Napoleonic Wars.
And, yes, you "think it's good to have detailed and correct information about each village", but I don't see why it can't be in the article about a commune. The segregation helps no one, the merger won't hurt anyone - as per the point I make above regarding the forking of info. It's also unfair to ask that we have articles on each villages because you feel that we should have an article on one particular village. Is it because you researched the practicalities of what you propose? is it because you challenge the rationale of what the rule of thumb has been? is it because you have a reason to assume that the articles on villages will differ significantly from those on communes? Because, let me tell you, all these things were taken into consideration when Romanian editors over here expressed consensus over not having separate articles on villages. If you want to change that consensus, I'd be happy to listen to your overall strategy and what propsals you have in mind for the other hundreds of villages. Dahn (talk) 22:20, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Heh I told you I'm incompetent - it was my first coord and my first article about a settlement. Terrible shame :(( --Vejvančický (talk) 21:59, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

No problem with that, Blofeld. The final result is good for Wikipedia - you can find info on Sfânta Elena here, and that is important. Thanks for your help :)) --Vejvančický (talk) 12:33, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

What we're going to do about them? Nothing is my guess, at least not right now (unless editors follow my Coronini lead, and I'm guessing some will sooner or later). Some material will pop up even on Armeniş, if one looks close enough - in fact, some of the sources I used on Coronini provide good info on other communes in the region, which only proves that there is potential. My main worry was about not getting even more articles on the sub-commune villages, because we'd really be scraping the bottom of the barrel (not to mention make it impossible to build a coherent structure of information, and harming the commune articles' chances of going anywhere at all). With patience, we'll get to at least some of those stubs - focused expansions are the spice of this here enterprise. Dahn (talk) 15:47, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

Oops, yes: I forgot to answer to that. I found one such site with data from 2002 (the last census): here is the clickable list of counties. Click on "localităţi" and you get the details for each municipality/town/commune. For example, in Botoşani, click on "afişează date" under "Corni", and it gets you to this page (it's maintained by Erdélyi Magyar Adatbank, which is a pretty reliable source. Just please don't use the bare url, as it would be a mess to copyedit. Also, the site doesn't have all the diacritics around, so please double check what commune the data refers to. Dahn (talk) 16:10, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

Nah, they're okay. All in all, I would prefer a citation format with all relevant data (like I used on Coronini and Armeniş), because that sort of data will have to be added eventually, but I understand how it would be annoying to have to copypaste that into tens of articles. Dahn (talk) 22:04, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

Infobox edit

Hey, Evil Doc, when you get a break from vandalizing articles on Palestinian settlements, would you mind dragging your butt to take a look at brand new {{Infobox Russian inhabited locality}} (which is the re-design I have long promised) and tell me what you like, what you don't like, what should be added, what should be removed, what bugs I have missed, and so on?

The template now only has one mandatory parameter (and it's not even the locality's name!), hides everything else by default, can be used for any localities (not just cities and towns), and aggressively asks for references to alleviate the copy-paste fever of some users. Planned future additions (so far) include a field for the time zone (which will be automatic) and creation of several wrapper templates (such as {{Infobox Russian city}}, {{Infobox Russian urban-type settlement}}, and {{Infobox Russian rural locality}}) which will provide data for some parameters by default. However, all that ain't gonna happen until next week at least, so take your time testing what's already up and running (I've redirected the city/town template to this one already). Also, I might drop in tomorrow or over the weekend to check messages, but probably won't show up until Monday. If you see anything that's totally broken (I sure hope not), feel free to revert the redirect and let me know what the problem is. Well it was not hard to add a little content to the article, but no knowing my way around the orchid world it took too long. This is the sort of thing that the much despised "class projects on Wikipedia" could do. Rich Farmbrough, 13:31, 21 August 2009 (UTC).
AS for the film redirects, I am not sure what they are but I would leave them in place, redirects are cheap and useful there is generally little to be gained from deleting them - in fact the cost of listing them at RfD is much greater than the cost of the redirect. Rich Farmbrough, 13:33, 21 August 2009 (UTC).
Well that's done, and I have also categorised the redirects into YEAR films and Category:Argentine films. Rich Farmbrough, 14:42, 21 August 2009 (UTC).
I can't see an easy way to do this. there was discussion elsewhere (AWB) on removing self-links via redirects, but it is a vexed question precisely because they are Redirects with Possibilities - which I need to add... Rich Farmbrough, 14:55, 21 August 2009 (UTC).
There were two, Pakistani Cities and another one, anyway they are fixed. best to do this when you move the template (or even before - see for example here, to move that page with its 50 odd redirects I first cut and pasted to the target, then fixed the redirects, then did the move-with-history. Even this isn't guaranteed to work if sub-pages are involved (in fact I broke Infobox Indian jurisdication, because it explcitly linked to a redirect to one of its own sub-pages). • It's probably not a good idea to shoehorn a license in cases like this, though I know you were acting in good faith. As for your question, if I recall correctly, Google has purchased a partial (or complete? [5]) interest in a satellite or two, so they are probably able to claim copyright over their imaging. Best regards, –xenotalk 13:09, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

Well I have wondered then how google can claim copyright for satellite imagery, maybe that's it. Anyway I was the first to spot that the images was NOT GFDL. PLease see my comment on Master's talk page to show I did tell him to change the licensing. Dr. Blofeld White cat 13:13, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

I think someone plans to list it on PUI, so it'll be sorted out there. Thanks, –xenotalk 13:14, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

Maybe it could have a fair use rationale written for it. I mean it is quite an impressive image and a satellite image isn't replaceable... Dr. Blofeld White cat 13:16, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

I'm no expert on FUR, but I doubt that would fly. Though, since we're already working with Google in other ways, I'm sure someone could ping them about allowing properly attributed images to be used. I wonder if anyone has tried? –xenotalk 02:45, 23 August 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, I don't think our list of villages is in any way comprehensive yet. Ilan Pappe's 2006 book says there are 531 villages that were depopulated (previous estimates had been of about 400). If you do find ones that are missing, you can create redlinks in the template or stubs (as you wish), so that we at least know how much we have left to do. Thanks again for all your efforts. Some villages are harder to write about than others. Ones without Christian associations tend to have less information available about them in English. I'm surprised you even managed to find information on Islamic artifacts in the village sinc that time period was totally ignored by archaeologists until about little more than a decade ago. (See Syro-Palestinian archaeology for more on that). Anyway, good work. Tiamuttalk 16:19, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

Shukran! edit

Thanks so much for the barnstar Dr. B! It feels good to know your work is acknowledged by your peers. Keep up the good work yourself, and you're probably not Muslim, but happy Ramadan anyway. Cheers friend! --Al Ameer son (talk) 17:37, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

Hahaha this is actually funny. Apparently there's two Youssef Seddiks. The one I was planning on starting should actually have been spelled Yusef el-Sadiq; he was one of the Egyptian revolutionaries of 1952. I gathered a couple of sources on that guy. Nonetheless, this is a good thing since the Tunisian philosopher has an article now. I don't have any sources on him, but will see what I can do. Happy editing Dr. B. --Al Ameer son (talk) 17:47, 22 August 2009 (UTC)
Well, the only source I saw that spelled his name "Youssef Seddik" was al-Ahram Weekly. I guess we'll create a dab page once his article created. --Al Ameer son (talk) 17:57, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

Hey! edit

You need to start listening to Gavin Collins! Orchids and villages and politicians are not notable! Wikipedia is not meant to be the sum of knowledge. And I'm going to start a thread on ANI if you don't remove those confusing italics in this page's title! clickpop (talk) 19:08, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

Neither is President Obama maybe LOL? We have an article on his grandmother though... Italics are to emphasise evilness at planning world domination....19:10, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

You're being very pointy here; please use a real signature. Clickpop (talk) 02:40, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
