Japanese Whalers- Superstitions There are very few superstitions surrounding Japanese Whalers however one traditional Superstition still exists. The Japanese Whalers paint the Japanese flag on the bottom of their boat as they believe that fish from their waters will protect them and help them should anything go wrong on their expeditions. This stems from the European tradition. When the early European explorers went to discover new lands they would paint the flag of their nation on the bottom of their boat for the same reason. As many of these journeys were successful the Japanese believe that it will protect their whaling fleets.
