Dipnkar Khanna dob 12th March 1957, was born in Palampur, the Kangra Valley in Himachal Pradesh. Palampur is a place made famous for its Kangra Tea. His parents shifted to Mumbai when Dipnkar was 2 years old.
His mother Indrani Mukherjee was selected by the veteran movie Hindi film producer and director, Bimal Roy (who also made the films Madhumati and Do Bigha Zameen) to act in Usne Kaha Tha (उसने कहा था). This drama film directed by Moni Bhattacharjee starring Sunil Dutt and Nanda in lead roles released in 1960.
