This bibliography of the works of Sir William Petty (1623-1687) provides an overview of and gives easy access to (all of) his writings. William Petty was an important political economist and statistician of the seventeenth century. But he was also active in various other fields. He wrote a lot. But most of his works were not in the first place intended for (scientific) publication, but rather “for circulation in the corridors of power or with a view to acquiring influence and jobs - which he never managed to obtain.”

We may call Petty an economist, even though "Political Economy" was not yet a science in his days. Most writers on the History of Economic Thought consider Petty as an important predecessor of the Political Economy that would develop in the 17th and 18th century and that would grow into maturity in the end of the 18th and the first half of the 19th century.

The same is true for Petty as a statistician.

Older bibliographies

The first attempt to create an overview of the writings of William Petty was made by himself (in or after 1682). It is printed as an Appendix in Fitzmaurice's Life of Petty. It is entitled the 'Collection of Sir William Petty's Works since the year 1636, found at Wycombe, in his own handwriting'.

Bevan 1894 gives a very compact 'Bibliography of the Printed Works of Sir Willliam Petty'.

Collected works

1769: Tracts

In 1769 the Tracts Chiefly Relating to Ireland (by the late Sir William Petty. To which is prefixed his last will. Dublin : Printed by Boulter Grierson, Printer to the King's Most Excellent Majesty. MDCCLXIX.) were published.

The Tracts consisted of:

I. A Treatise of Taxes and Contributions.

II. Essays in Political Arithmetic.

III. The Political Anatomy of Ireland.

1899: Economic Writings

In 1899 Charles Henry Hull published The Economic Writings of Sir William Petty together with the Observations upon the Bills of Mortality, more probably by Captain John Graunt.

1997: Collected Works

In 1997 Terence W. Hutchison edited the so-called Collected Works in eight volumes. It was reviewed by Aspromourgos.
