Early economist,
more accurately: predecessor of the classical political economists.

A Treatise of Taxes and Contributions (1662)

 

But Petty is also known as:

  • physician, and Professor of Anatomy in Oxford (1650),
    and Professor of Music at Gresham College London;
  • cartographer of Ireland: The Down Survey (1655-1656);
    and subsequently a (big) landowner in that country (about 270.000 acres at his death);
  • writer of Advice to Hartlib, about education (1647);
  • inventor of things like "Double Writing" and a double-bottom ship;
  • inventor of "Political Arithmetic" (statistics), together with John Graunt;
  • one of the founders of the Royal Society of London;
  • etc. etc.
