Looking for some help! edit

An abusive admin has blocked my pal on IP address 24.147.103.146. The admin is named Gamaliel. This admin has been reported in the past by 24.147.103.146 for copyright violation and made to revert. He must be holding a grudge. It may also be due to his POV on the Kennedys and his past invlovement in edit wars. The reason given for the block was an old RFC on Ted Kennedy. My pal added appropiate links to other Kennedy pages not mentioned in the RFC. The admin is pro Kennnedy so he blocked my pal. In any case, this is an abuse of his priv and I ask your help in bringing this to light. Thank you193.120.103.205 06:15, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

Pimp + Sugar Daddy edit

I removed the refererence to "sugar daddy" being another name for "pimp" in the article Age disparity in sexual relationships, because it is not. I checked close to a dozen references for this word, and not one even came close. Why did you choose to revert my revert? Denni 19:08, 4 December 2005 (UTC)

Because I have heard it used that way. lets have a look: Pimp+Sugar Daddy

Quiz images edit

Hi, and thanks for your message and your compliment.

Last August I had this conversation and thought that afterwards everything would be okay. The deletion craze has finally reached those quiz images, and I'm afraid there is nothing whatsoever I can do about it. I've had silly discussions with some of the deleters, and, to be honest, I'm sick and tired of wasting my time having to justify the existence of an image.

Only the other day I considered deleting the whole quiz, but why should I do that? I'm sorry you couldn't finish it properly.

All the best, <KF> 04:00, 11 December 2005 (UTC)

THanks a lot for your encouragement! <KF> 04:13, 11 December 2005 (UTC)

You have in the past commented on Image Galleries nominated for deletion. Most galleries are nominated because the nominators feels that galleries violate WP:NOT. My thoughts? I totally agree with you about creeping lists - I hate the way people can't resist yet another example to any perceived list perceived to be open-ended. I was probably a bit guilty of that on this page. However I think the "black" example is a particularly central, fundamental one. Perhaps if the wording before any list is changed from "here are some examples" to "The single best example to illustrate this point is:" kind of thing. I don't have strong feelings about this particular page (or almost any, for that matter :)).
There really ought to be a word for this creeping listitis...Stevage 01:33, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

High school edit

Sorry, JJay, notability exists as part of a continuum from none to lots. It is nonsensical to say that all schools are notable; that renders the meaning of "notable" absurd. Things are only notable relative to other things, and schools are no different. I've attended many schools in my life, and as a teacher, I've taught in many more. I can assure you that most schools are hard-pressed to find things which distinguish them from others. My guess is you haven't seen the inside of a school since you finished high school, and are looking at the schools issue through fond retrospect, which is a really bad way of judging the validity of an encyclopedia topic. Denni ☯ 02:14, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

  • First off, Denni, as a teacher, I would hope you would follow the rules, as in not posting to a closed AfD discussion. That's why we have talk pages and I'm sure you won't object if I revert your post. Second, your remarks regarding my school experience are not relevant. How do you know I even finished high school? Perhaps I am penning this screed in the school library surrounded by other snickering acne-covered juveniles, many of whom will go on to become distinguished alumni, notable enough to warrant mention on a wikipedia page. Third, given our differing viewpoints, I fail to see why you want to continue this debate on school notability. Your stance, though grounded in years of bitter first-hand experience, is still well outside the mainstream, judging from AfD results. Some might even qualify your point of view as heretical. Fourth, I seem to recall you had just finished pontificating at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Quartz Hill High School on how Quartz Hill High School was, I quote, "a school for which nothing spaecial can be said", while I was adding information related to the plotted massacre of the inhabitants of said institution. A reckless statement of fact, made without foundation and immediately proven wrong, often leads the utterer to commence a prolonged period of recondite reflection and study. This is a course of action that may be well-advised, and might profitably be undertaken within or near any notable high school. -- JJay 03:44, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Featured_picture_candidates/DrugChart edit

Wikipedia:Featured_picture_candidates/DrugChart was submitted as a diagram including the links (as stated in the submission). Of course it is meaningless without them. --Thoric 03:52, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

I'm not quite sure what you are driving at with the comment you placed on my talk page, but my point is that featured pictures need to be worthy as stand-alone images, and cannot rely on article text to support them. While this image may do a superb job of supporting its article, it is not capable of standing alone and is therefore not an appropriate candidate for Featured Picture. No hard feelings, I hope. Denni ☯ 01:26, 23 December 2005 (UTC)
If you read the guidelines, they say, "the images featured on Wikipedia:Featured pictures should illustrate a Wikipedia article in such a way as to add significantly to that article. Pictures that are striking but do not illustrate an article can be submitted to Featured picture candidates on the Wikimedia commons." -- so obviously you do not quite understand the voting system for Wikipedia featured pictures, especially with regards to diagrams and charts. If you check that section you will find it quite lacking in comparison to other categories. --Thoric 06:20, 23 December 2005 (UTC)

Moving articles on afd edit

If you move an article that's on afd, please make sure that it still points at the discussion instead of a redlink; this helps the discussion be found if you stumble across the article (or actually wrote it), instead of just reading afd. You can do this either by making a redirect (as I've done at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Restaurant rating), or by editing the link in the afd notice. —Cryptic (talk) 15:46, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

Wishful thinking on school articles edit

I think you will find that you are the only engaging in wishful thinking. In the last 12 hours 12 different editors have started a school article. That comes to nearly 9,000 a year without any "big stub-mill editors", and the rate of production probably hasn't peaked yet. CalJW 07:01, 26 January 2006 (UTC)

And if they were high quality every one would love them. But, many represent the lowest quality in wikipedia. Or worse are vanity or attack pages. And the only ones that seem to get attention are those listed for AfD. Now there is a bad precedent. David D. (Talk) 01:16, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

Crystal (glass) edit

Please don't change the redirects, there was (and is) a request for a move, affecting lead glass, crystal (glass) and lead crystal that is now all over place becuase you changed pages while voting was going on. I'm putting it back only so voting can keep going in its original format. IF you have issues, please comment on the talk page of glass crystal where voting is going on, rather than changing things midstream. Pschemp | Talk 03:53, 28 January 2006 (UTC)

We obviously have a difference of opinion here, so why not let the vote progress and deal with it in a civil manner than reverting stuff all the time? I'm just asking (again) for you to leave it, unitl it is decided by a vote. Your reverts are destructive and confuse the voting. A vote is neccessary because there exists a redirect at Lead crystal already. Yes, any admin could do it, but I am trying to do it by policy. Pschemp | Talk 23:04, 29 January 2006 (UTC)
Right. I am a non-admin, so I requested the move at the page move request so the talk histories could be combined because of this statement when I tried to move crystal (glass) to Lead Crystal: "The page could not be moved: a page of that name already exists, or the name you have chosen is not valid. Please choose another name, or use Requested moves to ask an administrator to help you with the move." The intended target, Lead crystal was already occupied with a redirect and I assumed that just doing a merge would leave the talk pages in the wrong places. The procedures at Wikipedia:Requested moves say to put a comment (support/oppose) section on the talk page of the proposed movee, so I did. How is this the wrong procedure? I followed all the directions at this page so I'd really like to know what was wrong with the actual move request to make sure I understand what goes on with page moves. (Just trying to learn.)
As for the content, if whether it is cut or not affects the name, then there need to be two articles, one at lead glass for the noncut and stating that once it is cut it becomes lead crystal. I see you have taken care of this, however I do wish you had stated your reasoning with some edit summaries on the original reverts or communication of some sort earlier because I think it would have saved a lot time of both of our parts. As I remember, the last spam that was handed out was on the 20th of December last year, so I think it's time for another update. First and foremost, the new Advisory Council and Administrator General have been elected. They consist of myself as Admin General and FireFox, Titoxd, Flcelloguy and Karmafist as the Advisory Council. We as a group met formally for the first time on the 31st of Decembe. The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.

In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: {{EA-welcome}} (courtesy of Bratsche). Image Tagging Image:D-Psicose.gif edit

This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:D-Psicose.gif. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Longhair 03:28, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.

Please do not unilaterally lower case bird articles. There is a long standing agreed convention that all bird species' articles are fully capitalised. If you are not happy with that, discuss it on the tree of life page, although with several thousand capitalised articles already I suspect you have a difficult task, especially as some bird pages have species list with hundreds of names listed. jimfbleak 09:55, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1 edit

Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience:
"No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Note from the editor
Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!
  1. Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before.
  2. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log.
  3. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time.
  4. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified.
  5. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community.
  6. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially.
  7. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on.
  8. The Advisory Council is not going to be proposed to be expanded by the Advisory Council themselves, if others want to propose it, they will listen.
Signed...

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #2 edit

The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Information
Welcome to the second issue of the new format Esperanza Newsletter - we hope you still like it! This week, it was delivered diligently by our new dogsbody. MiszaBot (run by Misza13): any execution complaints should go to him. Content comments should be directed at the Esperanza talkpage. Thanks!
  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Wikipedia. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.
A plea from the editor...
The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.
